Abstract: A sulfurized composition prepared by sulfurizing a mixture of at least one terpene and at least one other olefinic compound is described. More particularly, sulfurized compositions prepared by sulfurizing a mixture of pine oil and at least one other olefinic compound are described. Such sulfurized compositions are useful as lubricant additive compositions, and more particularly, as additive compositions in industrial and gear lubricants. The compositions when added to lubricants provide lubricants which exhibit improved antioxidant characteristics, nitrile seal compatibility and acceptable color characteristics.
Abstract: Lubricating oil compositions containing less than about 0.1% by weight of phosphorus are described, and these lubricating compositions comprise a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, and a minor amount of at least one oil-soluble sulfur-containing material which comprises the reaction product of sulfur and a Diels-Alder adduct in a molar ratio less than 1.7:1 wherein the adduct is an adduct of at least one dienophile with at least one aliphatic conjugated diene. Such lubricating oil compositions exhibit improved oxidation-corrosion-inhibiting properties, anti-wear properties, and/or extreme pressure properties. Such lubricating compositions also exhibit improved compatibility with nitrile seals.

Abstract: Inhibitors useful in preventing the corrosion of metal surfaces that contact aqueous systems containing them are disclosed. The inhibitors comprise mixtures of monoamine salts of polycarboxylic acids and boric acid. Typical corrosion inhibitors are made from acids such as dodecanedioic, sebacic and azelaic acid, monoamines such as mono-, di- and triethanol amines and boric acid.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for cooling an internal combustion engine which comprises circulating within the cooling system of said engine an oleaginous coolant fluid composition which comprises(A) a major amount of a lubricating oil having a kinematic viscosity of from about 3.5 up to about 5 cSt at 100.degree. C. and from about 18 up to about 30 cSt at 40.degree. C.; and(B) a minor amount of one or more of the following compositions:(1) one or more basic metal salts of organic acids;(2) one or more phosphorus-containing metal salts;(3) one or more phenol antioxidants.
Abstract: Interpolymers of .alpha.-olefins having at least about 6 carbon atoms and unsaturated carboxylic acids or derivatives thereof, such as maleic anhydride, may be prepared by heating reactive amounts only of the monomers with a free radical initiator, preferably in a solvent-free system and typically at a temperature of at least about 135.degree. C. The time required for polymerization is relatively short under these conditions.
Abstract: Polyolefin compositions are described which can be dyed by conventional dyeing techniques. Such polyolefins comprise a blend of (A) a polyolefin and (B) a dye-receptive amount of at least one metal sulfonate which is soluble in the polyolefin when melted, and which sulfonates are characterized by the formulae ##STR1## wherein R is an aliphatic group,R' is an aliphatic group containing at least about 8 carbon atoms,Ar is an aromatic group,M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal,n is at least 1,y is equal to 1 when M is an alkali metal and 1/2 when M is an alkaline earth metal, andx is equal to the valence of M.The preferred sulfonates are those represented by Formula (I) and especially wherein M is sodium. In particular, it has been found that films and fibers prepared from such polyolefin composition, and more particularly polypropylene compositions, are readily dyed with common dyes to provide deep shades and fastness.
