Abstract: In a hand-held unit (1) with a housing (2), with a light conductor (3) held in the housing (2), particularly for the dental treatment with laser light, and with a flushing means (4) directing liquid in the region of the operating point of the laser light beam, it is provided that the flushing means (4) produces a bundled liquid jet (6), and that the laser light beam (8) is coupled into the liquid jet (6).

Abstract: A carding flat and a system for guiding and driving it in a card with moving flats driven by articulated chains, in which coupling between the flats and chains is achieved by a form fit using recesses and projections without fixed retention devices, so that these elements are not mutually constrained in the direction perpendicular to the chain movement.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for laser-microscopic magnification of objects, and to a device for implementing the method. In particular, organic, elastic or insulating objects, as well as their surface structures, can be examined down to the nanometer range by this method in a contactless manner and without preparation, and the optical signals generated can be processed with little technical effort. To this end, the specimens are irradiated with a laser beam which has previously been expanded to a larger beam diameter via an expanding lens system (3) and subsequently focused to the smallest possible beam diameter by means of a focusing lens (5) of short focal length. The object can be screened in this context. The intensity of the reflected light and scattered light (6) is detected at a very large solid angle, preferably on the inner surface of one of two hemispherical bowls with direct or indirect photosensors. Optical fibers can be used as photosensors.

Abstract: A capping apparatus, in particular for applying PRESON.TM. style caps to glass jars, comprising a chute with grooved sidewalls to allow free passage of the caps irrespective of tab orientation. At the chute outlet, stops depend from a bridge bar in order to engage the leading cap above its tab, again allowing caps to be presented in random orientation.

Abstract: In a pump housing (10), the blood pump comprises an impeller (13) with a flat plate (30) and blades (34) projecting therefrom. The impeller (13) is supported between balls (18,20) forming an axial sliding bearing. The front wall (35) and the back wall (14) of the pump housing extend substantially parallel to the plate (30) of the impeller (13). The height of the blades (34) linearly decreases with increasing radius so that the gap between the front wall (35) and the blades (34) increases outwards. Since the circumferential speed increases as well, the shearing rate remains constant. Between the plate (30) of the impeller and the back wall (14), a gap of constant width is provided, in which secondary flows are produced, thereby avoiding dead water zones.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a mattress retention bracket for an adjustable bed to prevent an associated mattress from sliding laterally thereon. The mattress retention bracket in a preferred embodiment of the invention is a generally U-shaped member defined by a bight portion and a pair of legs with each leg having first and second end portions normally offset from each other. Terminal ends of the legs are secured to an underside of a mattress supporting member and first end portions and a bight portion of the U-shaped member lie contiguous peripheral edges of the mattress supporting member and the mattress to prevent relative shifting therebetween as a user/patient ingresses or egresses the bed. In lieu of the latter, another mattress retention bracket is substantially of a T-shaped configuration defined by an arm and a depending leg with the leg having first and second end portions defining an angle generally normal therebetween.

In situ molded pads of polymeric/copolymeric synthetic plastic material are generally inboard of the framework at the lower jaw part and the rear skull part with the molded pads surrounding at least one narrow bar of the framework to retain the same fixed relative to the framework.

Abstract: A sail includes a headsail and a mainsail each having leading and trailing edge portions with the headsail trailing edge portion being disposed adjacent the mainsail leading edge portion. The headsail is pivotable relative to the mainsail and is restricted in such relative pivoting movement. The headsail is defined by a plurality of headsail segments separated by gaps in at least selective ones of which is a batten extending substantially between the headsail and the mainsail. A covering preferably in the form of a bracing band of sheet material or fabric material covers an associated gap. Each bracing band is defined by a bight band portion embracing the headsail leading edge portion and leg band portions being secured to opposite sides of the main sail leading edge portion.

Abstract: The composite structure made of wood and reinforced concrete can be used for bridges, roofs etc. In a bridge, a plate of reinforced concrete carries the roadway and rests on a truss comprising lower and upper chords, transversal girders and struts made of wood and posts made of reinforced concrete. The lower struts are reinforced with steel ties, follow a bent curve and are anchored in lateral end sections. Forces in the wooden parts all extend along the wood's fibre, which increases the maximum load capacity. The concrete posts allow a simple assembly of the wooden elements. The weight of the construction is low, its load bearing capacity high.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display for a laser marker for attaining a higher marking speed, characterized in that a liquid crystal display screen (10) is divided into a first zone (10a) where a sub-scanning is first performed and a second zone (10b) where a sub-scanning is performed following the first zone (10a) sub-scanning, that switching of display is performed independently for each of the first and second zones (10a, 10b), and predetermined voltages are applied, respectively, to row and column electrodes after those row and column electrodes are grounded, whereby display switching processing can be performed independently for each of the first and second zones. Completion of the sub-scanning of the first zone (10a) is detected by a position detecting means, and when such a detection is done, switching of display in the first zone (10a) is independently performed.

Abstract: A lid 1 for a container body 8 having a side wall 7 portion at one end of which an annular portion 9 extends at an obtuse angle to the side wall to define the mouth of the container. The lid has an elastically deformable central panel 2 and a peripheral annular flange 3 which extends downwardly and outwardly from the central panel to define a seal surface to co-operate with the annular portion 9 of the body. When adhered or fused together the inclined portion of the lid and body receive the stress, arising as a thermal processing increases the volume of product packed, as a load in shear peel force being minimized.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing the cyclohexylamine salt of (+)-threo-2-hydroxy-3-(2'-aminophenylthio)-3-(4"-methoxyphenyl)-propionic acid and of its optical (-)-antipode, by starting from the racemate acid by means of a first crystallization from a suitable chiral base and a second crystallization from a cyclohexylamine-containing solvent. Said salt is an intermediate in the synthesis of diltiazem, a well-known calcium-antagonist drug.
