  • Patent number: 5416126
Abstract: A composition which is cured upon exposure to ultraviolet light in the absence of solvent is disclosed. The liquid composition is prepared by combining a liquid maleate polyester and at least one of a vinyl compound and an allyl functional compound. A photoinitiator is then added to the polymerizable liquid composition. A substrate is impregnated with the polymerizable liquid composition and exposed to actinic energy of a sufficient dosage for a sufficient amount of time to polymerize the composition to a sufficient degree to impart useful properties to the substrate. The composition can be used as a binder for fiberglass insulation, in the manufacture of transparent or semi-transparent paper and to manufacture paper for use in photocopy machines.

  • Patent number: 5412144
Abstract: The present invention is directed to organic materials that have the ability to double or triple the frequency of light that is directed through the materials. Particularly, the present invention is directed to the compound 4-[4-(2R)-2-cyano-7-(4'-pentyloxy-4-biphenylcarbonyloxy)phenylheptylidene) phenylcarbonyloxy]benzaldehyde, which can double the frequency of light that is directed through the compound. The invention is also directed to the compound (12-hydroxy-5,7-dodecadiynyl) 4'-[(4'-pentyloxy-4-biphenyl)carbonyloxy]-4-biphenylcarboxylate, and its polymeric form. The polymeric form can triple the frequency of light directed through it.

  • Patent number: 5407271
Abstract: A rotary mixer and disperser head consisting of a shaft to which is connected a mixing chamber that is to be disposed into a vat or the like for dispersing, dissolving or blending of solids liquids or gasses with other liquids. The mixing chamber has secured to its upper and lower ends a plurality of impeller blades that have an end thereof located outside the mixing chamber to direct material into the mixing chamber and out through openings in the side wall of the mixing chamber during the mixing and dispersing thereof. The shaft for rotating the mixing chamber is merely located at one end thereof and doesn't extend into the mixing chamber and thus does not impede the mixing action taking place therewithin. The specific location of the blades, their relationship relative to the mixing chamber and their configuration provide for a very efficient mixing operation.

  • Patent number: 5408621
Abstract: A combinatorial data entry system useful with a computing apparatus comprises two multi-position switches. A data entry system useful with a telephone comprises one multi-position switch. Each multi-position switch includes a control knob, which can be manually tilted between a rest position and any of twelve tilted positions and is biased to the rest position, and twelve switchable devices, which may be electrical, opto-electronic, capacitive, or magnetically activated. Electrical switching devices having stationary and movable contacts are preferred. In each multi-position switch, each switchable device has a deactivated state and an activated state and corresponds uniquely to one of the tilted positions of the control knob. Each switchable device has an active output when switched from the deactivated state into the activated state.

  • Patent number: 5404870
Abstract: A transanal inserter is disclosed which facilitates the atraumatic insertion of intra-anal surgical devices through the anus. The inserter has a tubular portion, a prolate distal end and a proximal end having a flange associated therewith. The prolate end is formed from a plurality of petal-shaped segments which deflect outward as an intra-anal surgical device is urged therethrough, into the colon or intestine. The flange formed at the proximal end of the inserter retains the inserter in place and prevents over insertion of the inserter beyond the anus. The inserter can be fabricated in varying lengths to accommodate surgical requirements. The inserter is fabricated from a plastic material with sufficient pliability to provide for deflection of the segments, while maintaining sufficient rigidity to prevent collapse of the inserter during insertion and use.

  • Patent number: 5402558
Abstract: A resilient clip or spring clip is disclosed which has a pair of jaw members and a generally U-shaped biasing member for connecting the jaws together and for biasing the jaws into a closed position. The biasing member has a pair of legs connected by a curvilinear central portion and a curvilinear support portion interior thereof. The central portion and support portion are connected by a bridge-like member, and define a channel therebetween. The sidewall of each jaw member has a closed sidewall extending along a substantial portion thereof and defines an arcuate surface. During actuation of the clip, the sidewall traverses through the channel in the biasing member, while the support portion defines and serves as a fulcrum for rotation of the jaws between the open and the closed positions, independently of any separate support member.

  • Patent number: 5403492
Abstract: The invention provides a method for removing metal oxides and colloidal material from high-resistivity water streams at a relatively high removal efficiency. The method includes hydrating a highly ionized dual morphology ion exchange resin in a macroreticular, desiccated morphology to produce a macroreticular, hydrated morphology. A water stream which is brought into contact with the resin is purified. The water stream may, optionally, also be contacted with both a cation exchange resin and an anion exchange resin. The invention additionally provides a method for selecting ion exchange resins which are particularly suited for use in removing metal oxides from a condensate stream. The method serves to narrow the field of candidates for pilot-scale resin testing with industrial water streams.

  • Patent number: RE34924
Abstract: A roller track for a storage rack arranged for gravitational flow of load-bearing pellets. Freely rotatable rollers are journalled, each on a spindle, between two parallel walls. Rollers of a first group are journalled on spindles bolted to the walls. Rollers of a second group are journalled on spindles held by but not bolted to the walls. Each of the latter spindles has, at each end, a shoulder portion larger than an aperture in one of the walls and a pintle portion fitted into the aperture. The pintle portion has a cylindrical wall and the aperture has a cylindrical margin. Along at least a substantial portion of the roller track, every third roller is a roller of the first group while every other roller is a roller of the second group.
