  • Patent number: 5430412
Abstract: An amplifier, suitable for use in a limited band at microwave frequencies, incorporates a single lossless feedback coupling element between the input port and output port of the gain circuitry. The feedback element is formed of two coextending conductors of a length on the order of a quarter wavelength of the center frequency of the band. An input signal is coupled to the gain element through one of the feedback conductors. An output signal is coupled from the output port of the gain element through the other of the conductors of the feedback element. Relatively low closed loop gain, on the order of 10 dB, is achievable over the specified band at center frequencies on the order of 800-1000 MHz.

  • Patent number: 5427260
Abstract: A tamper-evident dispensing closure is provided with a base suitable for attachment to a container. The base has a deck defining a dispensing orifice and an anchor-receiving opening with an adjacent anchor-retention structure. A lid is provided to close the orifice and defines an aperture spaced from the dispensing orifice when the lid is seated on the base. A tamper-indicating element is provided with an anchor retained in the opening below the deck in the base. The element has a first segment extending from the anchor through the base opening, between the base and lid, and through the lid aperture. A second segment extends from the first segment and is disposed adjacent a portion of the lid to inhibit movement of the lid from the closed position. A first frangible connection joins the first and second segments at the lid aperture. Preferably, a second frangible connection joins the first segment to the anchor at the anchor-receiving opening in the base.

  • Patent number: 5422629
Abstract: A silencable photoelectric-type detector includes a source of radiant energy and a detector. A generator circuit provides a sequence of pulses to energize the source. A biasing circuit biases the detector. The detector can be temporarily silenced, when in alarm, by reducing the energy level of the pulses or altering the bias point of the detector for a period of time. The period of time can be established by an RC circuit. The effect of the energy level reduction or the bias point alteration is to reduce the sensitivity level of the detector temporarily.

  • Patent number: 5421922
Abstract: A foamed adhesive insulation, consisting of a mixture of a foamed adhesive material and a fibrous insulation material, is provided which adheres to a desired surface without the need for a retaining means to hold the mixture in place. While in the flowable state, the foamed fiber insulation can be molded to a desired shape and texture. The foamed fiber insulation adheres and can be applied to substantially any surface, such as wood, metal, masonry, concrete, or urethane, with virtually any orientation. The compression and tensile strengths of the layer of foamed fiber insulation can be selected by adjusting the mixture of foamed adhesive material and insulation particles. The foamed fiber insulation can include additives such as a dye to produce a substantially rigid insulation layer of a desired color, or a fire retardant material to produce a fire retardant insulation layer.

  • Patent number: 5419099
Abstract: An intermittently operated, indexing container conveying system is particularly configured for versatile use with an associated container filling apparatus. In distinction from previous arrangements, the present system includes a servo-drive motor for effecting intermittent indexing movement of a container-carrying endless conveyor. Programmable controls of the system facilitate operation of the system for optimizing efficiency, facilitating use of the system with containers of differing configurations, and with food products exhibiting varying physical properties (i.e., such as viscosities). The present system permits acceleration and deceleration rate of the conveyor to be selectively varied, as well as selective variation of indexing pitch and stop points of the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5420401
Abstract: A microwave oven, in particular for rapid heating to high temperature, is disclosed. A cylindrical metal housing is open at one end and has a cylindrical side wall, into which a waveguide opens, the waveguide being coupled to a microwave generator. A first outer layer of a thermally insulative, microwave-transparent material and a second inner layer thereof are provided in a coaxial configuration. A metal sleeve provided with plural coupling slots is interposed between the outer and inner layers. A muff of a microwave-absorbing material is received within a central opening of the inner layer and constitutes a heating enclosure. A metal plate fitted with an access door is provided for closing the open end of the housing. An infrared pyrometer or a thermocouple may be provided for measuring temperatures in the heating enclosure. The heating enclosure may have a vent for evacuating fumes and an orifice for injecting gases.

  • Patent number: 5416336
Abstract: A radiation image read-out apparatus which comprises an optical system for exposing a stimulable phosphor plate (1) which contains a latent radiation image to a stimulating beam, and a light collector (3) for directing the stimulated light generated in the phosphor plate (1) to a photodetector (4), for example, a photomultiplier tube. Such read-out apparatuses often have the disadvantage that sufficient light cannot be collected into the photodetector. This problem has been solved by using a shiny mirror tube as the light collector.

  • Patent number: 5415716
Abstract: An apparatus for effecting synchronous, in-line placement of pads of material, such as a highly absorbent compressed composite laminate, includes a supply reel for supplying a continuous web of material. The web of material is guided to a pair of pull rolls which effect movement of the web at a first velocity V.sub.1. A cutting mechanism, preferably comprising cooperating knife and anvil rolls, cuts individual discrete pads of the material for presentation to an associated vacuum transfer drum. The vacuum transfer drum includes a peripheral surface operated at a second velocity V.sub.2 equal to or greater than the first velocity V.sub.1, with the velocity V.sub.2 equal to the linear speed of movement of an associated continuous substrate, such as comprising air laid comminuted wood pulp. The discrete pads of material are thereby transferred onto the substrate at a relative spacing S between adjacent ones of the discrete pads, which spacing equals L(V.sub.2 -V.sub.1)-L.
