  • Patent number: 8340010
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for energy efficiency synchronization packet based networks are provided. In this regard, an amount that a clock of a network device drifts between consecutive communications of one or more synchronization packets may be determined, and transitions of the network device into and/or out-of an energy-saving mode of operation may be controlled based on the determination. Additionally or alternatively, the transitions may be controlled based on a number of times that synchronization packets are communicated between the network device and a link partner. An average difference between the clock of the network device and a reference clock may be calculated, and the transitions may be controlled based on the calculated average.

  • Patent number: 8325892
Abstract: A system and method for authentication for configuring a customer premises equipment (CPE) in a service provider network. In a multiple dwelling unit (MDU) a customer device (e.g., voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) phone) can be configured with CPE functionality, thereby enabling the customer device CPE to support the provision of service to multiple additional customer devices in a customer premises. A dedicated CPE device is thereby eliminated from the service provider network. The customer device CPE can be designed to support a form of authentication (e.g., Layer 2, Layer 3) that would be sufficient for access by the multiple additional customer devices to various network services.

  • Patent number: 8310949
Abstract: A system and method for enhanced physical layer device autonegotiation. The autonegotiation process typically identifies the highest common denominator amongst various standardized modes of operation. Enhanced autonegotiation can be used to select a mode of operation that is not the highest common denominator. Enhanced autonegotiation can also identify a non-standardized mode of operation using next page messaging, additional physical signaling, or Layer 2 messaging.

  • Patent number: 8300655
Abstract: A system and method for dynamic power control for energy efficient physical layer communication devices. Energy-efficiency features are continually being developed to conserve energy in links between such energy-efficient devices. These energy-efficient devices interoperate with many legacy devices that have already been deployed. In these links, energy savings can be produced by having a local receiver enter an energy saving state based upon the receipt of standard IDLE signals.

  • Patent number: 8301913
Abstract: A system and method for dynamic power provisioning for a wireless access point. Various types of power management information (e.g., number of users, connection speed, etc.) can be used in a process for determining a power request/priority for a wireless access point (WAP). The determined power request/priority can then be used in a dynamic allocation process by which the WAP's allocated power budget can seek to match its current power needs.

  • Patent number: 8301922
Abstract: A system and method for policing bad powered devices in power over Ethernet. Degradation of components within powered devices can lead to noise and ripple that exceed specified thresholds. This noise and ripple can adversely impact the operation of the power sourcing equipment. A noise detector implemented in the power sourcing equipment can detect the presence of such noise and ripple and modify the application of power to the particular port.

  • Patent number: 8301919
Abstract: A system and method for implementing fairness in the powering of computing devices in a power over Ethernet (PoE) application. Power supplies in a power sourcing equipment are often oversubscribed. This oversubscription can lead to starvation of certain computing devices that have power requests that are not granted relative to competing requests. A fairness consideration can be implemented to ensure that starvation conditions are avoided.

  • Patent number: 8291219
Abstract: A system and method for enhancing the protection of digital properties while also increasing the flexibility of distribution of the digital properties. In one embodiment, the digital property is protected through the binding of at least one unique client device identifier with the digital property prior to distribution. Decryption at a client device would therefore be dependent on a comparison of the unique client device identifier that is extracted from the encrypted digital property with a unique client device identifier of the device that is seeking to access the digital property.

  • Patent number: 8279788
Abstract: A method and system for stateful negotiation of energy efficient parameters in Layer 2 are provided. In this regard, energy efficiency of communications between a first network device and a second network device may be managed via an exchange of information between the network devices and a verification of whether the information is up-to-date prior to utilizing the information. In various embodiments of the invention, the second network device may generate a decision pertaining to implementing one or more energy efficient techniques and the second network device may send a message to the first network device requesting that the first network device implement the decision. The message sent to the first network device may comprise the decision as well as parameter values utilized to generate the decision. The first network device may receive the decision and the parameter values and may determine whether the received parameter values are up-to-date.

  • Patent number: 8276013
Abstract: A system and method for using a link energy signal in physical layer devices (PHYs) having a silent channel/interface in energy efficient Ethernet (EEE). LPI modes in EEE suffer deficiencies in cable unplug detection due to the latency in refresh cycles. LPI modes in EEE also suffer from potential frequency drift, which leads to high bit error rate (BER) when coming out of LPI mode. A link energy signal transmitted during LPI modes enables real-time detection of cable unplug and the frequency lock to be maintained.
