  • Patent number: 8261114
Abstract: A system and method for dynamic energy efficient Ethernet (EEE) control policy based on user or device profiles and usage parameters. The analysis by an EEE control policy can consider user or device related EEE profile information that is either network propagated or retrieved from a network database. This EEE profile information can be used in combination with static settings established by an IT manager and the properties of the traffic on the link itself.

  • Patent number: 8259716
Abstract: In an Ethernet network comprising link partners coupled via an Ethernet link, an energy efficient Ethernet network communication control policy may specify a power level mode. Power level control data may be communicated between a PHY and a MAC via an MII, MDIO or a bus that is not specified by 802.3. A device above a MAC layer device may comprise hardware, software and/or firmware that may communicate the control policy to the PHY layer device and/or MAC layer device. Control data may be inserted within an inter-packet gap, a data packet preamble and/or a Q ordered set and/or may be sent via an out-of-band signal. A response to the control data may be sent via an in band path and/or out of band path. Link partners may enter and/or exit a power mode, for example, a low power idle and/or a sub-rate mode based on the communicated control data.

  • Patent number: 8242904
Abstract: A multi-mode asset tracking and monitoring system and method is provided that enables comprehensive reporting of asset position, status, and alerts. In one embodiment, the multi-mode system and method is based on the addition of a local network monitoring system to a wide area satellite network monitoring system. In this example, the local network monitoring system would add container presence and status monitoring in crowded environments (e.g., within a port facility, on-board a ship, etc.), while the wide area satellite network monitoring system would provide tracking and monitoring coverage when the container is in dispersed environments. Both the local and wide area monitoring systems work together to provide end-to-end container tracking and monitoring to thereby ensure continuous container tracking and monitoring from container loading to container unloading.

  • Patent number: 8234510
Abstract: A system and method for energy savings through emulation of wake on LAN (WoL) in energy efficient Ethernet networks. An intermediary device between a computing device and a network can be alerted that the computing device has entered an energy saving state with wake on LAN (WoL) enabled. The intermediary device can transition the client interface that supports the computing device into an energy saving state and emulate the WoL function of the computing device by listening for a WoL message destined for the computing device. Upon receipt of a WoL message destined for the computing device, the intermediary device can transition the client interface back to an active state then transmit the received WoL message to the computing device.

  • Patent number: 8230240
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for energy efficient networking over a serial communication channel are provided. In this regard, one or more circuits in an Ethernet PHY that communicates over one or more serial communication channels may transmit and/or receive physical layer signals to maintain and/or refresh synchronization and/or training parameters while operating in an energy saving mode. The Ethernet PHY may transition out of the energy saving mode upon transmitting and/or receiving a wake sequence via the serial communication channel(s), where the wake sequence comprises one or more deterministic forward error correction (FEC) block in instances that FEC is utilized for communications via the serial communication channel(s). The one or more circuits in the Ethernet PHY may be operable to perform forward error correction (FEC) functions and one or more of the FEC functions may be disabled while remaining ones of the FEC functions are enabled.

  • Patent number: 8217529
Abstract: A system and method for enabling power applications over a single communication wire pair. In one embodiment, a data transformer is provided that has three separate windings. Two of the windings are tied to each other via high frequency pass DC-blocking capacitors, or another suitable element that creates an AC path while providing a DC block, such that the voltage forms on either ends of the DC-blocking capacitors and the signal is sent on the outer legs of each winding. A circuit measures the current draw (I) and injects a current proportional to, but smaller than, I into a third bias cancellation winding.

  • Patent number: 8214665
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for queue management for energy efficient networking are provided. In various embodiments of the invention a network device may determine whether to transition into or out-of an energy-saving mode of operation, and arm an EEN trigger by buffering the EEN trigger in a queue and/or setting one or more flags. The network device may transition into or out-of the energy-saving mode upon the EEN trigger being read from the queue or upon the queue becoming empty while the trigger is armed. Upon the occurrence of an event meeting one or more criteria prior to the EEN trigger being read from the queue or prior to the queue being empty, the EEN trigger may be disarmed. The network device may disarm the EEN trigger by deleting the EEN trigger from the queue and/or by resetting the flag.

  • Patent number: 8199770
Abstract: An Ethernet network comprises multi-rate link partners that may be operable to communicate symmetrically and/or asymmetrically via any of a plurality of channels. The multi-rate link partners may monitor one or more factors that may affect their power consumption and/or energy efficiency. During operation, an uplink and/or downlink communication rate may be configured, based on the monitoring, to enable asymmetrical data rate operation. The monitored factors may comprise prior or current data rates, bit error rate, packet error rate, latency, queued data and/or tasks, for example. The multi-rate link partners may comprise a twisted pair PHY, an optical PHY or a backplane PHY. In order to reduce power consumption and/or improve energy efficiency, one or more of the uplink communication rate and/or the downlink communication rate may be lowered. The power consumption may be reduced for a multi-rate PHY, a host computer and/or a MAC controller.
