  • Patent number: 5158662
Abstract: A device and method for detecting and/or continuously measuring the concentration of oxidizable biodegradable substrates in a medium. The device comprises an oxygenated first electrode and a second electrode. The first electrode is capable of carrying microorganisms capable of oxidizing the substrates in the presence of oxygen thus releasing electrons. The electrons are received by the second electrode and detected and/or measured by the device. The rate of electron transfer correlates to the concentration of substrate in the medium providing a method of continuous measurement of the substrate in the medium.

  • Patent number: 5156183
Abstract: A top-entry check valve has a valve chamber containing a seat, cage, disc and utilizes a spring retainer to prevent movement of the seat, cage and disc in the downstream direction. A removable bonnet covers an access opening the valve chamber. The seat and cage are a unitary structure for ease in replacing the seat and cage. An annular shoulder in the valve body prevents movement of the seat, cage and disc in the upstream direction. The spring retainer is secured in the valve body by engagement with a lug in the valve body, the unitary seat and cage, the access opening in the valve body and the bonnet. Removal of the bonnet allows access to the valve chamber for replacement of the seat, cage, disc or spring retainer.

  • Patent number: 5148615
Abstract: An improvement in a dredging apparatus for cooperating in removing a mixture of liquids and solids from a selected site. The dredging apparatus includes a frame with means for moving the frame and an arm assembly having one end movably connected to the frame. The improvement includes an auger housing having an auger opening formed through a portion thereof. The auger housing is connected to the end of the arm assembly. An auger is rotatingly supported in the auger housing. A pump is disposed near the auger housing and positioned so that a pump inlet opening is fluidic communication with the auger opening. The mixture enters the auger opening and is augeringly moved toward the inlet opening in the pump. The pump pumps the mixture from the auger opening through a discharge opening of the pump.

  • Patent number: 5148477
Abstract: A method for detecting and quantifying motion of a body part of an individual or animal, such as an individual's face or portion thereof. A digitized image of the body part in a reference position is produced (referenced image). A digitized image of the body part in a changed position then is produced (changed image). The referenced image is compared with the changed image to determine movement parameters indicating the movement of the body part from the referenced image to the changed image.

  • Patent number: 5146996
Abstract: Apparatus and method for thrusting a cover onto a target area from a remote location. The target area may be water containing fish or a hazardous condition such as a fire and/or a chemical spill. The apparatus comprises a housing having an open cavity, a cover within the cavity, and a pressurized gas supply for propelling the cover from the cavity and onto the target area. A guide bar positioned in the housing and a support surface attached to the cover cooperate to impart rotation to the cover as the cover is propelled from the housing. The cover may be impregnated with an agent capable of neutralizing the particular hazard, or such an agent may be injected under the cover after the cover is positioned on the affected area. In the case of a chemical spill, the cover is utilized to contain the liquid and then the liquid can be cleaned up by pumping the liquid from underneath the cover.

  • Patent number: 5142831
Abstract: A surface treating device for treating a surface having a corner formed by obstacles such as walls or curbs. The apparatus comprises a housing supported on a movable frame. An opening in the housing defines a blast zone on the surface to be treated. A hopper collects abrasive material and directs it to a propeller. The propeller propels the abrasive material from the hopper toward the blast zone with sufficient kinetic energy that the material rebounds from the surface into a rebound corridor. The rebound corridor has a first linear portion which forms the forward most aspect of the apparatus, and the first linear portion is substantially perpendicular to the surface being treated. From the rebound corridor, the recovered abrasive is returned to the hopper. The apparatus has a rotatable, adjustable handle to facilitate movement alongside and under obstacles. A push plate is provided on the rear of the frame under the handle, thereby making it easier to move the apparatus.

A strip of hook and look fabric is attached to the straight outer surface of the body for attaching the user's glove. A blade is rotatably attached to the end of the body. One end of the blade is a divot repair tool and one end is a curved surface for checking the roundness of golf balls. One square tooth and one pointed tooth are provided on the arms of the divot repair tool for cleaning the grooves in the heads of golf clubs. Ball markers may be included with the accessory. The ball markers preferably are equipped with a spot of hook and loop fabric on one the side so that the ball marker can be carried on the hook and loop strip on the body. Alternately, a hole surrounded by a small magnet may be provided in the body above the strip for receiving the spike of a ball marker which is either made of metal or provided with a metal collar.
