  • Patent number: 5869834
Abstract: A photodetector for measuring the position of an incident light beam on an active surface area of the detector includes an inactive area and a concentric stray light absorbing area, both of which outwardly surround the light-absorbing active area. All light incident on the stray light-absorbing area and the inactive area will generate a photoelectric current which is conducted to an earth ground via an electrode in the stray-light area. An electrical signal from the active area representing a position of the measured light in the active area will be unaffected by any stray light incident on the detector externally of the active area.

  • Patent number: 5858316
Abstract: A process and device for removing and oxidizing organic substances from an extracted air stream. The air stream is flowed through a filter which adsorbs the organic material, where the airstream is bypassed around a catalyst until the filter is saturated. At saturation a heater supplies heat to the filter to desorb the organic material. The catalyst is heated by another heater at the desorption period and receives the organic material and extracted air stream to oxidize the organic substances.

  • Patent number: 5853494
Abstract: A method of automatic washing of vehicles, wherein recirculation and reuse of a substantial proportion of the washing liquid takes place during the washing procedure proper and wherein a principle of counter-flow is used, whereby the vehicle will be washed in a dirtier washing liquid during early treatment states than in later ones. The vehicle is positioned in at least one treatment station, where a plurality of the treatment steps are then carried out, and in the first treatment step treatment liquid is supplied from a first treatment tank and is sprayed onto the vehicle together with additives, if any, and together with impurities originating from the vehicle the liquid thus supplied flows through openings in the floor and is returned to the first treatment tank.

  • Patent number: 5854435
Abstract: There is provided a natural resonant speaker adopting the resonant mechanism of a stringed instrument such as the violin, viola, cello, double bass, or acoustic guitar. It can be said that the stringed instrument is a natural resonant speaker which shows excellent sound frequency characteristics and stereophonic effect by relying on a natural resonant phenomenon. Therefore, the natural resonant speaker outputs a sound signal transferred from an amplifier of an audio system as a stereo sound by adopting a structure which is the same as or similar to the natural resonant structure of the stringed instrument. The natural resonant speaker has a speaker body employing a general figure eight shaped stringed instrument body structure and having at least one resonant hole in a frontal plate thereof, and a vibratory unit for transforming an electrical sound signal into a mechanical sound vibration between resonant holes of the frontal plate.

  • Patent number: 5845796
Abstract: A railcar cushioning device includes an elastomeric spring and a hydraulic shock absorber member. The fluid accumulator is located outside of and above the fluid chambers. The accumulator is in communication with the fluid chamber in a non-stroked position, causing entrapped air to be displaced by the fluid, into the accumulator. Free of air, the shock absorber immediately responds to impact forces. The elastomeric spring reduces peak impact forces and returns the piston of the shock absorber to its non-stroked position. The elastomeric spring also absorbs draft forces.

  • Patent number: 5839326
Abstract: An apparatus attaches to an automobile brake pedal lever in such a way as to allow a statuesquely small automobile operator the ability to adjustably control the total brake pedal length so that he can comfortably remain a safe distance from the steering wheel while still reaching the brake. This control apparatus has a leaf spring element that provides temporary self-supporting capability so that the optimum arrangement can be found before the controller is more stably connected to the existing brake pedal.

  • Patent number: 5830039
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the harvesting of royal jelly. The method comprises the use of a first matrix of cell-like structures in an arrangement typical of normal worker bee cells which have interconnected plugs placed in the back of the matrix. A queen bee may then lay this matrix of cells with eggs. Upon the eggs turning into larvae, the plugs may be removed and the plugs are provided in interconnected sets such that each set provides plugs for each alternate cell in the first matrix of cells. These plugs may then be fitted to a second matrix of cells which provide larger, queen-like cells at a spacing of substantially the same as the alternate cells in the first matrix. The second matrix may then be placed in a queenless hive for the bees to fill the larger cells of the second matrix with royal jelly which may then be harvested.
