  • Patent number: 8223735
Abstract: Techniques are provided to performing beamforming on a wireless communication link that employs multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) signal formatting techniques. At a first wireless communication device, a waveform is received at each of a plurality of antennas, where the waveform comprises a multi-carrier code division multiple access ranging transmission from each of one or more of a plurality of second wireless communication devices such that MC-CDMA ranging transmissions from two or more second wireless communication devices overlap in time and frequency. All codes in a set of possible codes that may be used by the second wireless communication devices are searched to determine whether which codes in the set are present in the one or more MC-CDMA ranging transmissions contained in the received waveform.

  • Patent number: 8218831
Abstract: Techniques are provided to analyze video frames of a video signal in order to distinguish regions containing a face (and body torso) from regions that contain a relatively static background. The region containing the face is referred to as a foreground region. A current video frame is divided into a plurality of elements and the foreground regions and background regions are detected. The background regions of a subsequent video frame are detected/registered using the foreground regions of the current video frame. The foreground regions of the subsequent video frame are determined using the background regions of the current video frame as a temporal reference.

  • Patent number: 8218677
Abstract: Techniques are provided to pre-distort a signal that is transmitted by a transmitter of a wireless communication device, e.g., a device configured for wireless radio frequency communication. The transmitter of the device inherently introduces distortion to the baseband signal to be transmitted. In at least one frame of a baseband signal to be transmitted, at least one subcarrier in a preamble of the frame is shifted in frequency such that the at least one subcarrier is offset from a normal subcarrier frequency position. The at least one frame of the baseband signal is supplied to the transmitter that is configured to produce a transmit signal for transmission. The transmit signal at an output of the transmitter is sampled or detected and inter-modulation distortion in the transmit signal is determined at one or more frequencies as a result of shifting of the frequency of the at least one subcarrier in the preamble of the at least one frame.

  • Patent number: 8219125
Abstract: Coincident with the evolution, maturation, etc. of wireless messaging ecosystems, today and in the future the addressing of a message needs to include—and all of the different entities that process messages (e.g., Wireless Carriers, intermediaries, enterprises, Content Providers, Service Providers, etc.) need to support—additional (i.e., enhanced, flexible, extensible, etc.) message addressing capabilities. The present invention provides an infrastructure that supports such additional (i.e., enhanced, flexible, extensible, etc.) message addressing capabilities through, among other things, the availability of Dynamic Tags (DynaTags). The infrastructure may optionally leverage the capabilities of a centrally-located Messaging Inter-Carrier Vendor.

  • Patent number: 8217815
Abstract: A Sigma-Delta modulator with a shared operational amplifier (op-amp) includes an integrated circuit, having two integrators sharing the op-amp, capable of integrating two input signals of the two integrators; a plurality of quantizers, coupled to the integrating circuit, for comparing outputting signals of the integrators with a predetermined signal and then generating digital outputting signals; a plurality of DACs, respectively coupled to the quantizers, for converting the digital outputting signals to analog feedback signals to the integrators; and a clock generator, for providing clock signals to the integrating circuit and the quantizers. Accordingly, layout area and power consumption of the modulator are reduced due to the shared op-amp.

  • Patent number: 8218964
Abstract: An interface between a network component and an optical fiber section communicates with a remote interface and a remote network component at an opposite end of the optical fiber section through over-modulation of optical signals sent between the interfaces and network components. The over-modulation is at frequencies much lower than the ordinary modulation of the optical signals. The over-modulation allows communication between the interfaces for performing management, testing and maintenance operations and permits superior detection of faults in the optical fiber section.

  • Patent number: 8213527
Abstract: A first wireless communication device recovers data from a transmission received over a wireless channel from a second wireless communication device and processes the received data with each of multiple channel variation compensations to produce corresponding processed received data subjected to respective ones of the multiple channel variation compensations. For symbols in the received data and in each of the processed received data, distances are computed to their closest symbols in a symbol constellation set used in the wireless transmission. A corresponding distance metric is computed from the distances for symbols in the received data and from the distances for symbols in each of the processed received data resulting in a distance metric for the received data, and a distance metric for each of the processed received data. Channel variation of a wireless channel between the first and second wireless communication devices is estimated based on the distance metrics.

  • Patent number: 8209596
Abstract: An integrity monitoring system (IMS) monitors data upload errors, internal data processing errors, clock faults, and transmit signal distortions in a transmitter system. The IMS includes a receiver with an A/D converter that under-samples a multi-band RF signal to produce a composite, aliased IF digital signal. Individual signals are extracted from the composite signal via correlation with the appropriate spreading code. The resulting signals are evaluated to determine whether any signal distortion is present in the RF signals being transmitted, and data is extracted from the signals to perform checks of data uploaded to the transmitter system and data present in the transmitted RF signals that was generated within the transmitter system. The IMS also checks for clock faults in the transmitter system without requiring an independent timing reference by using clock phase information provided by the transmitter system's time keeping system.
