  • Patent number: 4220809
Abstract: The disclosure is of electronic apparatus having a keyslot in its housing, by which it is coupled to a mounting screw. To protect the electronic circuitry inside the housing, the keyslot is covered internally by a layer of insulating paper and a thin metal sheet which overlies the paper and which is cemented to the surface of the housing adjacent to the keyslot. With this arrangement, the keyslot is accessible externally of the equipment for insertion of a screw; however, the inner circuit elements are completely and permanently sealed off from the outside world.

  • Patent number: 4213717
Abstract: Disclosed is a ball point ink pen, its ink and its eradicator. The ink is carried at one end of the pen and the eradicator portion is carried at the other. If an error is made, the pen can be reversed and the eradicator used to neutralize the ink. The ink also neutralizes the eradicator so that when one rewrites with the same ink, any remaining eradicator on the paper is neutralized and the original ink acts as fresh ink.

  • Patent number: 4211493
Abstract: The disclosure is of an impact printer assembly for use in facsimile machines or the like comprising a housing which contains a plurality of parallel slidable plates, each of which carries an electrical winding in the form of a coil. Each plate and its coil is disposed between a pair of magnets with the coil in operative relation with the magnets. The magnets are positioned so that a north pole is adjacent to one surface of a plate and a south pole is adjacent to the opposite surface of the plate. Thus, each magnet is in operative relation with two plates except for the first and last magnets of the assembly. The printer assembly includes a plurality of parallel printing plates, each of which has a leading portion which provides the desired impact and a second portion which is in engagement with a plate and is driven thereby when signal current flows through the coil on that plate.

  • Patent number: 4198024
Abstract: A unitary retention arm or holder for use with a printed circuit card or board. The holder comprises an elongated L-shaped arm of generally rectangular cross section, being wider at its base than at its L-shaped opposite end. The L-shaped end has a narrow channel formed therein for receiving the edge of a printed circuit card, with a guiding ramp or chamfer leading to the channel. A threaded bolt is molded into the base of the holder. The holder is formed from a slightly flexible plastic. In operation, the holder is attached to a printed circuit card frame or cage or other support means with its base bolted near individual card connectors. A printed circuit card having edge connectors is inserted into its appropriate card connector, the card holder is flexed away from its associated printed circuit card, and then the outer edge of the printed circuit card is pressed into the channel formed in the L-shaped end of the holder.

  • Patent number: 4193113
Abstract: A method for interrupting the execution of a keyboard macroinstruction by a central processor to permit execution of non-keyboard macroinstructions when no external data is present in the central processor keyboard buffer. Auxiliary registers are provided mirroring critical registers used by the central processor for processing both keyboard and non-keyboard macroinstructions. The central processor interrogates the keyboard buffer to ascertain entered data. If no entered data is present, a non-keyboard macroinstruction is executed. If entered data is present, it is processed. Values are continuously exchanged between the auxiliary and critical registers to maintain the proper values for executing both keyboard and non-keyboard macroinstructions.

  • Patent number: 4181935
Abstract: Improved means and methods are described for providing microprogramming in a microprogrammed data processor. A separate, relatively fast access Read/Write microinstruction memory is provided which operates as an index-associative cache memory with respect to the processor main memory in a manner which permits a high "hit" ratio to be obtained for requested microinstructions, while at the same time removing the burden from the programmer of having to be concerned with the loading and/or current contents of the microinstruction memory.

  • Patent number: 4180840
Abstract: Various flexible disk information storage systems use a dual-component access arm which includes both a magnetic transducer and a pressure pad. The transducer rides on one side of the disk while the pressure pad is applied to the opposite side of the disk so as to increase the loading of the transducer against the normally-flexible surface. Such disk systems can include two such transducer/pad pairs, oppositely-oriented so that both sides of the disk can be read. In the disclosed cleaning disk assembly, an abrasive material is placed on one side of the disk and a smooth surface is placed on the other. The abrasive side is used to clean a transducer, while the smooth side is used to present a standard surface to the associated pressure pad. The cleaning assembly includes a reversible container having special apertures which enable the system software, in conjunction with disk drive detection elements, to automatically determine abrasive surface orientation.

  • Patent number: 4179737
Abstract: Improved means and methods for providing highly flexible microinstruction sequencing in a microprogrammed digital data processing system particularly with regard to the handling of specialized types of sequencing situations such as are involved in wait-loop and repeat situations. The microprogramming control system is implemented using a plurality of programmable read only memories storing control words chosen so as to provide for microinstruction sequencing in a manner which in the first instance assumes that no branching possibilities are present, even though one or more branching possibilities may in fact be present in the microinstruction flow path, thereby permitting very fast microinstruction sequencing when the assumed sequencing is correct.

  • Patent number: 4177512
Abstract: A system for automatically polling peripherals associated with a computer system employing a program controlled interrupt mechanism wherein a number of programmatically established descriptors control input/output operations. Two such descriptors, one dictating a read-from-peripheral operation and the other a write-to-peripheral operation, are linked in a loop such that under typical polling conditions the input/output control unit controls read-write accesses to the computer system memory independent of the computer central processor. Loop operation is accomplished by a linking address in each descriptor which is set to point to the other descriptor and by op code bits set to indicate a poll mode such that the I/O control typically performs a read-write-read-write sequence of operations.

  • Patent number: 4168486
Abstract: In a data processing error control system for named data, a parity check matrix and apparatus for using same provides for single error correcting of the data word and for multiple error detecting in both the data word and data name. The parity check matrix and apparatus utilize two additional parity check bits (over that required by a system using a prior art SEC/DED Hamming code) to provide protection against single bit errors, eight contiguous bit errors (i.e., hardware stuck at logical one or logical zero for the whole eight contiguous bits), similar four contiguous bit errors, and faults covering the entire data name field (which could occur, for example, if a wrong data word was fetched from memory). The parity check matrix is segmented and mated to the error correctional requirements and prevalent error modes of each field being protected. In encoding, parity check bits are generated for the combined data word and associated data name field.
