  • Patent number: 4708790
Abstract: An ultrafiltration system has a plurality of filter modules coupled in a parallel arrangement. The flow rate at the output of each filter module is detected. When the flow rate of a given module falls below a threshold value, that module is disconnected from the ultrafiltration system and automatically coupled into a regeneration circuit so that the filter module can be cleaned. Once regenerated, the filter module is recoupled into the ultrafiltration system. If the regeneration circuit is already in use when a filter module is detected to be in need of regeneration, that module is placed in a queue for regeneration once the regeneration circuit is free, and all other modules previously placed in queue have been regenerated. While awaiting regeneration, the filter modules are kept in service in the ultrafiltration system.

  • Patent number: 4688726
Abstract: A particle refining process is controlled in response to detected electron transfer phenomena. Pulses of electromagnetic radiation emanating from a refiner during a refining process are detected. The detected radiation is produced by dissociation and recombination phenomena in the particles being refined. The detected pulses are processed to obtain data indicative of the performance of the refining process. In particular, the mean pulse duration and mean energy per unit time of the detected pulses are computed. A process control signal is produced in response to the data, and the operation of the refiner is controlled with the process control signal to optimize the refining process.

  • Patent number: 4671874
Abstract: An apparatus and method for dewatering sludges and the like as part of landfill operations by electrokinetic techniques including placing anode and cathode electrode modules in contact with the sludge and applying electrical energy to the electrodes to establish an electric field in the sludge. Charged particles within the sludge, including macro-molecules, colloids, and suspended particles, elecrophoretically migrate to the oppositely charged counter electrode and consolidate. A filtration media located at one of the electrodes permits the electro-osmotic removal of water from the sludge to encourage solids densification. The electrical energy applied to the electrodes is a chopped, time-varying, intermittent unidirectional current having a rapid rise edge which provides dewatering results comparable to prior methods that used direct current or full AC current but at substantially reduced energy consumption to provide more economical dewatering.

  • Patent number: 4619299
Abstract: A lathe for peeling logs to produce veneer for making plywood or the like. The lathe includes sets of inner and outer dogs supporting each end of a log being peeled. A reciprocating-pressure bar or roller is included for engaging the peeled veneer adjacent to the knives. The lathe is operated by a programmed controller. The radius of each log being peeled is determined by the controller based on the position of the pressure bar or roller after round up of the log. When the radius of the log is greater than a preprogrammed value, the log core is released from the lathe after peeling to the diameter of the outer dogs. When the radius of the log is less than the preprogrammed value, the log core is released from the lathe after peeling to the diameter of the inner dogs. The controller automatically determines to which core diamter each log is to be peeled.
