  • Patent number: 5015335
Abstract: A static distributor is provided with a top surface that slopes upwardly from the center port opening through which chlorine dioxide and pulp stock are pumped into a bleaching tower. The upwardly sloping sides of the distributor provide a dish-shaped or concave configuration influencing the flow from the center port opening upwardly and outwardly toward the circumference of the tower. The static distributor is provided with side openings formed by vertical support plates. The vertical support plates are spaced about the circumferences of the concave or dish-shaped flow surface to support the same on a base and change the flow distribution so that a good portion of the flow is radial between the plates rather than vertical. The radial flow is mixed with the flow undergoing upward influence provided by the dish-shaped center portion of the distributor, which causes more complete mixing and the formation of a vortex-type flow in the bleaching tower.

  • Patent number: 5014854
Abstract: A gable top carton is provided with a flat top wall to facilitate stacking of the carton during storage and transportation. The carton is formed from a single blank of paperboard material provided with an array of score lines to facilitate the folding of various panels formed thereon into the erected carton. The top wall of the flat topped carton includes arrays of perforations disposed therein to define an integral tear strip that is selectively separable from the remainder of the carton. Removal of the tear strip enables panels of the top wall to be rotated upwardly and away from one another to define a unitary pour spout. The pour spout may be repeatedly closed and reopened to provide access to the pourable material as needed.

  • Patent number: 5013307
Abstract: An absorbent pad for use with an ostomy appliance or similar apparatus connected to a stoma extending through the skin of a patient, is formed of a flexible laminate with a liquid-permeable inner layer facing toward the patient's skin, an intermediate layer of absorbent material, and a liquid-impermeable outer layer. The layers are sealed together, and the laminate has a central opening for fitting around the connection between the ostomy appliance flange and body portion. An adhesive layer is provided on the peripheral border of the pad for sealing to the patient's skin. The adhesive layer is applied so that it encircles the absorbent surface area of the pad. The adhesive layer cooperates with the impermeable outer layer of the laminate to surround the fluid-absorbing intermediate layers of the pad and prevent fluid and odor absorbed therein from being released. The absorbent pad is further characterized in that it can be applied and disposed of separate and apart from the ostomy appliance.

  • Patent number: 4995936
Abstract: A continuous web splicing machine has supports for rotatably mounting two rolls of sheet material in tandem, guides for guiding the sheets along upper and lower paths to a splicing station, and an output loopholder for holding a loop length so that the web is supplied continuously even during the spicing operation. The splicing station has upper and lower upstream holders, upper and lower downstream holders, and upper and lower cutters at the splicing station. The cutters and holders are selectively operable in automatic sequences so that fresh sheets can be spliced to the spent sheets alternatingly from the two roll supports. The cutter is formed with knife parts having serrated edges with hooked teeth for improved cutting action. The holder assemblies may be oriented vertically or in other suitable orientations.

  • Patent number: 4993942
Abstract: A kiln for reclaiming quick lime for calcium carbonate sludge formed in the production of cooking liquors in a wood pulping process for the production of paper. The kiln provides increased output with lower energy input due to: measurement and control of oxygen content in the kiln; non-air mixing burner; castable refractory liner with tumbler ribs; a heat transferring chain system; and a variable speed exhaust fan and air flow control. The output of the kiln was increased by more than ten percent along with a forty-five percent improvement in energy efficiency at substantial cost reduction due to its efficient use of energy.

  • Patent number: 4979653
Abstract: A closure cap for a fluid container has a mounting part mounted on the container neck with a closure element of a given diameter fixedly positioned on the center axis thereof, and a movable part covering the container opening and movable along the center axis relative to the mounting part. The movable part has walls defining an external orifice on the center axis and an internal orifice recessed a distance inwardly from the external orifice. In one embodiment, the closure element is pulled to the closed position, and pushed to the opened position, and has a shape defining a labyrinth that creates a suction force which prevents fluid from leaking from the container when the container is righted.

  • Patent number: 4976394
Abstract: A carton with a handle comprises a cover member and a body member. The cover member has a plurality of panels which overlap each other to form the cover member. The body member has a plurality of panels and flaps which overlap each other to form the body member. The body member and the cover member cooperate with each other whereby when the body member is placed in the cover member the carton with a handle is formed.

  • Patent number: 4962208
Abstract: A method is improved for producing highly stable non-pyrogenic solutions of magnesium gluconocitrate. According to this process a specially prepared non-pyrogenic magnesium hydroxycarbonate or magnesium carbonate, gluconic acid anhydride and citric acid are first admixed to form a powder. The admixed powder is then added to an aqueous medium and heated to a temperature of at least about 80.degree. C. to rapidly drive out substantially all of the carbon dioxide. Alternatively, the aqueous medium may be heated to a temperature of at least 80.degree. C. prior to the addition of the powder. The magnesium hydroxycarbonate or magnesium carbonate is prepared by heating to 165.degree. C. for about 18 hours in thin layers in the presence of steam and an oxidizing atmosphere whereby any and all traces of organic material which could be pyrogen forming is eliminated by oxidation thereof.

  • Patent number: 4954316
Abstract: Anti-microbial compositions in the form of dry powders substantially instantly soluble in water, which exhibit stability for prolonged periods of time even at elevated temperatures of up to 130.degree. F., obtained by admixing an organic surfactant in which substantially all of the available oxidable groups have been replaced with fluorine to form a perfluoro surfactant, with a chlorinated isocyanuric acid. Preferably the anti-microbial compositions are obtained by admixing the following: trichloroisocyanuric acid, potassium hydroxide in an amount sufficient to neutralize the trichloroisocyanuric acid to its potassium salt, a fluorinated anionic surfactant, potassium monohydrogen phosphate and potassium chloride.
