  • Patent number: 5120669
Abstract: An ion-implanted JFET has a channel barrier region at the top gate surface self-aligned to the source and drain, thereby maintaining sufficient separation between the channel barrier and the source and drain for attaining a high source/drain breakdown voltage. After a top gate and an underlying channel layer are ion-implanted through a thin oxide layer, a first photoresist layer is formed and patterned to expose surface portions of the thin oxide layer where source, drain and channel barrier regions are to be formed. Through these apertures in the first photoresist mask, shallow high impurity concentration surface region are ion-implanted. A second photoresist layer is formed on the first photoresist layer, and patterned to completely expose the first and second apertures in the first photoresist layer and to remove material of the second photoresistor layer down to the surface of the the oxide layer, while masking the barrier region.

  • Patent number: 5119656
Abstract: A rolling mill for rolling metal strip moving in a horizontal rolling direction, has work rolls which engage the strip and are supported vertically by backup rolls through which drive is applied. The work rolls are supported in the horizontal rolling direction by support rollers contacting them at locations confined to intermediate regions between the work regions and bearings. The work rolls are shiftable in the horizontal rolling direction. To provide control of the horizontal forces during rolling, there are position control means for the support rollers operable to move and locate the support rollers so as to shift the work rolls to a predetermined location at which the vertical axial plane of the work rolls is offset in the horizontal rolling direction from the vertical axial plane of the backup rolls. The support rollers maintain the work rolls at the predetermined location during rolling.

  • Patent number: 5121387
Abstract: A link utilization control mechanism for a demand assignment satellite communication network employs a modified point-to-point communications protocol (X.25) in order to simulate point-to-point communication ports and thereby interface what is effectively a multidrop network with point-to-point landlink communication resources. Through an acknowledgement reservation mechanism the return link channel is subdivided into interleaved data and (preassigned) acknowledgement time slots, in order to substantially obviate overhead and throughput penalties encountered in the use of large data packets to transmit reduced size acknowledgement messages. In addition, the normal contention mode of operation of the return link is augmented with a data time slot reservation mechanism through which, during periods of increased message input density at a remote station, transmission throughput is facilitated, so that congestion at the remote station is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5120278
Abstract: An internal-combustion engine has a camshaft drive in which the outlet camshaft driven by the crankshaft drives the inlet camshaft via a chain. For the tensioning of the chain, two hydraulic pistons are pressed in opposite directions with respect to one another against the loose end and the load end of the interior side of the chain. For adjustment of the relative camshaft rotating position, the unit consisting of the hydraulic piston and the chain is shifted transversely to the camshafts so that the loose end is shortened and the load end is lengthened, or vice versa.

  • Patent number: 5120105
Abstract: In its rear area, a motor vehicle has a spoiler arrangement which can be moved by means of an adjusting device from a moved-in inoperative position into a moved-out operative position, and vice versa. In order to provide a rear-side spoiler arrangement which, while it has a simple construction, in the moved-out operative position, can be slid relatively far toward the rear and upward so that an enlarged inflow cross-section is achieved for the cooling of a rear-side air-cooled internal-combustion engine, it is provided that the spoiler arrangement comprises two parts which are hinged to one another. The part which is in the rear viewed in the driving direction is rotatably disposed on the adjacent body at its lower end, whereas the other forward part of the spoiler arrangement interacts with a guiding device arranged on the body side.

  • Patent number: 5117809
Abstract: A water-activated, exothermic-chemical heater for packaging in a plastic heating bag is produced by methods which allow the heater material to be loosely placed in the heater while retaining the heating material uniformly distributed over the heater by cup-shaped or through cavities in a rigid member covered by a porous, wettable material on at least one side. Alternatively, the heater material is loosed placed in small bags made in a flexible porous material, with the necessary system rigidity provided by a cardboard or polymeric outer cover on one or both sides of the flexible porous material. Food-grade acid anhydride or free acid can be incorporated into the heater material to maintain proper pH. • Patent number: 5119321
Abstract: Impulse noise suppression upstream of digital processing circuitry contains a sample and hold mechanism which samples the input signal and stores a plurality of sequential sample values respectively representative of the amplitude of the input signal at successive sample times. The contents of the sample and hold mechanism are compared with an input signal sample to determine whether or not the there are abnormal amplitude variations which potentially constitute impulse noise. In one embodiment the comparison is referenced to the average magnitude of the input signal. In another embodiment the input signal is coupled to a cascaded arrangement of sample and hold circuits which sample and store a plurality of sequential sample values. The time differentials between successive sampling times are such there is little likelihood of occurrences of impulse noise spikes during any two successive sample intervals.
