  • Patent number: 5978890
Abstract: In a data processing system in which main and sub disk storage devices are under the control of individual each disk control devices, the write processing time is reduced by selectively sending data according to the command-chaining time between main and sub disk control devices. A section for judging cable length and function of the sub disk control device 36 estimates command-chaining time between a pair of main and sub disk storage devices. The channel command analyzing section 31 estimates the number of records to be transferred and the length of a record using a LOCATE RECORD command. The command judgment section for the sub disk control device 32 optimizes the command-chain to be issued to the sub disk control device using the above-mentioned information. Then, the section for issuing command to the sub disk control device 35 issues the optimized command chain. Thus, a shorter transmission time is realized by either sending individual records or an entire track of data.

  • Patent number: 5973406
Abstract: An electronic device is solder bonded properly without using fluxes nor precise positioning with respect to a substrate. A bond pad with a size about twice the size of terminal pad of the electronic device is formed in a region on the substrate where the electronic device is to be mounted. After placing the electronic device of the substrate surface, the whole unit is heated in a nitrogen atmosphere to melt a bump formed on the terminal pad of the electronic device. The molten solder wets and spreads over the bond pads formed on the substrate, thereby establishing reflow soldering between the bond pads and the terminal pads. The position of the electronic device with respect to the substrate is spontaneously corrected due to a self-alignment function induced by wetting and spreading of the molten solder over the bond pad of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5974400
Abstract: A user of services is enabled to utilize a highly value-added service employing secret data of the user without presenting the data to the service provider side. In a system in which a server is coupled with a client via a communication network, the client inputs and sends a service identifier to the server, receives a program to execute the service from the server, inputs secret data as client controlled data from an input device and sends a server control data request to the server, and then receives the requested data from the server. The input data is irreversibly processed by use of the program and received data such that the client sends results of the process to an expert on the server side to receive an advice of the expert. By referring to the advice, the service user inputs evaluation of the outputted results. The steps beginning at the data request input are repeatedly conducted until the evaluation becomes satisfactory, thereby transmitting the process results to the server.

  • Patent number: 5973779
Abstract: A fiber-optic imaging probe is disclosed for use in dynamic light scattering applications. The probe includes two monomode optical fibers and two GRIN lenses to form a pair of identical fiber-lens combinations. Each fiber is positioned off the optical axis of its associated lens. Further, the optical fibers are placed at an image plane of the lenses. The fiber-lens combinations are parallel to and mirror images of each other. The first fiber-lens combination projects a tightly focused spot of light into a scattering volume containing suspended or dispersed microscopic particles, or biological or live tissues. The second fiber-lens combination collects the light which is scattered from the particles in the scattering volume and conveys it to a photo detector and autocorrelator for analysis. The probe minimizes the scattering volume by advantageously using imaging principles of lenses. Further, the probe optimizes sensitivity and spatial coherence.

  • Patent number: 5969124
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the isolation and purification of an L1-like molecule (i.e. L1CAM) from human brain. It has been found that the isolated L1CAM molecule supports neurite growth in vitro. Applicants have also cloned and sequenced the entire coding region of human L1CAM, and found that it shows a very high degree of homology to mouse L1cam with 92% identity at the amino acid level. This similarity suggest that L1CAM is an important molecule in normal human nervous system development and nerve regeneration. Overall, there is substantially less homology to chick Ng-CAM; they are 40% identical at the amino acid level but many regions are highly conserved. Comparison of the sequences from human, mouse, chick and Drosophila, indicates that the L1 immunoglobulin domain 2 and fibronectin type III domain 2 are strongly conserved and thus are likely functionally important.
