Abstract: A method of determining a concentration of magnetic powderly material in a sample is disclosed. In this method, a pair of series-connected exciting coils are disposed in such a manner that magnetic fields generated from the respective exciting coils oppose to each other. A detecting coil is disposed at a position where the magnetic fields from the pair of exciting coils cancel out each other. A sample mixed with magnetic powder is inserted into one of the pair of exciting coils. Then, the method detects a voltage induced in the detecting coil in association with the insertion of the sample into the exciting coil and determines the concentration of the magnetic powder in the sample based on the detected voltage.
Abstract: The application describes homogeneous assays for determining ligands. A sample is contacted with a labeled substance P.sub.2 and receptor R. The receptor R consists of one molecule of P.sub.1, which monovalently and specifically binds to P.sub.2, and one molecule for R.sub.1, which binds to the ligand of interest. Complexes of P.sub.1, P.sub.2, R.sub.1 and ligand form, and are determined. R.sub.1 must be a nucleic acid molecule.
Abstract: A pivot arm (3) is rotatable about an axis for delivering and removing a flat workpiece (24) into and out of the area of the lock (19) of an evacuable coating chamber (26). The pivot arm (3) is provided at its distal end with the retaining bolt (12) which is perpendicular to the plane (20) of the lock opening (19) and attached to a central part of a flexible diaphragm. The diaphragm is substantially parallel to the sealing surface of a workpiece carrier (16) and is fixed around its outer radial edge to the workpiece carrier so that the workpiece carrier (16) is able to tilt slightly during its vertical closing motion.
Abstract: In a moisture sensor (1), the effective sensor field (4) is formed by two sensor elements (8a, 8b,) having interdigitating parallel tracks. These sensor elements consist of layers of a metal nitride compound, especially a chromium-nitrogen compound, deposited by means of magnetron cathode sputtering or glow discharge onto a dielectric substrate (2), the metal nitride layers being deposited onto the substrate surface which has first been cleaned by ion sputtering. These sensor element layers (8a, 8b) have a high hardness of about 2,000 on the Vickers scale, as a result of which the sensor elements (8a, 8b) are highly resistant to abrasive wear such as that caused by windshield wipers or scratching from ice. The moisture sensor can be produced with a low electrical surface resistivity of <100 ohms.quadrature. and is chemically stable with respect to environmental effects such as salt water and/or windshield cleaning fluids.
Abstract: A movement variable which represents the movement of a vehicle is controlled by actuating at least one actuator for applying a braking force to the wheels. Controller means use controller internal variables to form signals for influencing the actuators with the effect of adjusting a control variable. The controller means has a first area adapted to the respective selected sensor configuration in such a way that the controller-internal variables are formed on the basis of the sensor signals, and a second area for processing the controller-internal variables independently of the selection of the sensor configuration. As a result, simple adaptation with low development and application outlay to a wide variety of sensor configurations is possible.

Abstract: A silicon-containing glass starting material is fed through a central area of a multi-nozzle burner head while the fuel gases are fed through an outer area surrounding the center. In a reaction zone near the burner head, fine SiO.sub.2 soot particles are formed, which are deposited on a carrier to build up a porous soot body, which is then sintered. During the process of building up the soot body, the fuel gas stream is varied to achieve a desired radial or axial density profile in the soot body. To separate the glass starting material from the fuel gas in the area extending from the burner head to the reaction zone, a barrier gas stream is provided between the burner gas stream and the stream of glass starting material. The burner head has a central, tubular nozzle and several ring nozzles arranged coaxially around it. Between the central nozzle and the ring nozzles, a ring-shaped barrier gas nozzle is provided, which has inner and outer boundary walls which are circular in radial cross section.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method useful in separating non-high density lipoproteins, referred to as "non-HDLs", from biological fluids containing them. A porous carrier is provided which contains a non-HDL precipitating agent. One need only contact the sample of interest to the carrier for one minute or less, after which the precipitated non-HDL-s are no longer present in the sample being tested. The applications of the method include the ability to determine high density lipoproteins in the sample without interference from non-HDLs.

Abstract: Power to the driven wheels is increased when the motor vehicle is traveling around a curve and the driver suddenly releases the gas pedal. A sudden release of the gas pedal is recognized when the rate of change of pedal position or the engine speed exceeds a threshold on the negative direction, or when the speeds of the driven wheels are less than the speeds of the non-driven wheels.
Abstract: Disclosed is an element for collecting, transporting and storing sample material to be analyzed containing absorptive matrix material. The element contains a first and a second layer of absorptive matrix material which are arranged side by side, next to, and touching one another on an inert support material in a contact enabling liquid transfer in such a manner that liquid can pass from the first into the second layer when the first layer is filled with liquid. The first layer can be completely separated from the second layer after applying and drying the sample material. Also disclosed is a system containing such an element and a closable envelope in which the element can be transported. In addition, the invention concerns a method for analyzing a liquid sample material in which the liquid sample material is applied to an element according to the invention, the first layer is separated from the second layer of absorptive matrix material for analysis and is subsequently eluted.

Abstract: A float sensor system for a replenishing tank 70 including an injection nozzle 80 attachable to a liquid feeding nozzle 60 of a replenishing device 70 for replenishing processing liquid to a development processing tank unit. This system includes a float 82 provided to the injection nozzle 80 of a replenishing tank 71-74 and movable between a first position and a second position, and a float detecting sensor 64 mounted to the liquid feeding nozzle 60. When an amount of liquid in the replenishing tank attached to the liquid feeding nozzle 60 exceeds a predetermined value, the float 82 is moved to the first position. When the liquid amount is lower than the predetermined level, the float 82 is moved to the second position. Also, the float detecting sensor 64 outputs a float detection signal when the float 82 is located at this second position.
Abstract: In a brake system with a controllable hydraulic pump in a hydraulic circuit, and with at least one solenoid valve, the operating state of the valve is changed in response to a control signal. As a result of the change in the operating state of the solenoid valve, the flow resistance in the hydraulic circuit is changed. Monitoring structure is provided which, in the presence of certain operating conditions, monitor the run-down behavior of the hydraulic pump in different operating states of the solenoid valve and actuate a display device to display a malfunction of the brake system when a malfunction is detected. Additionally, or alternatively, the automatic brake control can be turned off in reaction to the detection of a malfunction. It is possible for the control unit and the hydraulic unit to be replaced separately and for the installation to be tested for proper functioning.
