  • Patent number: 6062028
Abstract: A low speed high pressure ration turbocharger incorporates a compressor impeller having impeller blades for a first stage of compression mounted on a first side of the wheel and impeller blades for a second stage of compression mounted on a second side of the wheel. Driving the dual sided compressor impeller on a common shaft from the turbine wheel allows reduction in rotational speeds while increasing compression ratio of the turbine. The scroll inlet and outlet volute for the second stage inducer are integrated with the compressor housing or other portions of the turbocharger case for compact packaging.

  • Patent number: 6029345
Abstract: A method for mounting a cooling assembly for use in a motor vehicle, with the cooling system including a radiator assembly, a charge air cooler, and a condenser. The radiator assembly is mounted to a chassis of the motor vehicle, the charge air cooler is mounted to the radiator assembly, and the condenser is mounted to the charge air cooler so as to dispose the radiator assembly, charge air cooler and condenser in series flow relationship with one another. The radiator assembly includes a frame having two generally U-shaped portions, and a radiator, or heat exchanger, disposed within and mounted to the frame. A first lateral end portion of the radiator is rigidly attached to one of the U-shaped portions of the frame. The opposite lateral end portion of the radiator is resiliently mounted to the other U-shaped portion of the frame, which is accomplished by coupling a pair of leaf springs to the radiator and the frame.

  • Patent number: 6026791
Abstract: A control valve for an EGR system employs a variable pressure actuator connected to a valve for metering EGR flow and a differential pressure valve connected to supply actuation pressure to the actuator. The differential pressure valve incorporates a proportional solenoid connected to a pressure balancing piston which receives EGR pressure on one side and exhaust flow pressure on the other. The piston is connected to a shaft having an orifice positionable adjacent a pressure source in a first position and a pressure vent in a second position, an outlet of the orifice communicating with the pressure actuator. EGR control is accomplished by providing a signal to the proportional solenoid which shifts the pressure balance point for the piston.

  • Patent number: 5947681
Abstract: A turbocharger with a variable turbine nozzle having a plurality of vanes provides reduced actuation forces by pressure balancing the vane support axles. A nozzle ring and insert ring are secured in substantially rigid spaced relation by a series of hollow spacers and bolts to position the vanes between the nozzle inlet from the volute and nozzle outlet adjacent the turbine. A chamber intermediate the turbine housing and the center housing of the turbocharger accommodates the actuation mechanism for the nozzle vanes and through communication with the nozzle inlet from the volute by the tolerances between the nozzle ring and various elements of the actuation linkage transmits exhaust gas pressure to impinge on an end of the first axle for each vane. Balancing exhaust gas pressure is transmitted through channels between the turbine housing and insert ring, which extend from the nozzle inlet to the apertures receiving the second axles, to impinge on an end of the second axle for each vane.

  • Patent number: 5937650
Abstract: An Exhaust Gas Recirculation system for an internal combustion engine incorporates a turbocharger having a compressor rotor with two sets of vanes on opposite sides of the rotor disk for compression of charge air and recirculated exhaust gas. The charge air and recirculated exhaust gas streams are segregated in the turbocharger and an inlet and an outlet volute for the recirculated exhaust gas is integral with the turbocharger center housing. A mixer receives the charge air downstream of the charge air cooler and mixes the recirculated exhaust gas for input into the intake manifold. A variable valve intermediate the exhaust manifold of the engine and the inlet of the turbocharger EGR inlet volute controls the amount of recirculation.

  • Patent number: 5766329
Abstract: A calcia mold facecoat is applied to a mold for casting parts composed of reactive metals such as titanium and titanium aluminide. The facecoat is composed of a calcium carbonate based slurry comprising a dense grain calcium carbonate powder and an aqueous based binder. It is applied to a wax or plastic pattern used in the lost wax process for fabricating a casting shell. The mold is built using multiple dipping of alumina-silicate slurries, and then fired at high temperatures in an oxygen rich environment. The metal part is cast before the fired mold can cool below about 800.degree. C. Organometallic based slurry binders are avoided and significant cost savings are realized owing to the benign nature of the aqueous based suspensions with respect to the environment.
