Abstract: Systems and methods for recovering and managing location information in mobile communication networks using a fast recovery protocol and load balanced query and update processes. According to the fast recovery protocol, if a location update processor does not receive a message from a global database server acknowledging receipt by the global database server of a location update message after a predetermined retry interval has elapsed since the location update message was sent by the location update processor, the location update processor sends a location update retry message after each predetermined retry interval elapses until the location update processor receives an acknowledgement message from the global database server. The global database server can use the location update retry messages and the predetermined retry interval to recover from a database or link failure. The recovery period using the fast recovery protocol is bounded by the predetermined retry interval.

Also disclosed are nucleic acids encoding elongase KCS polypeptides, and yeast and plants expressing these polypeptides.
Abstract: A high gain amplifier circuit includes two differential transistor pairs and a current generator coupled to each differential pair to control tail current. Each differential transistor pair has a first transistor and a second transistor and an output node for each. Bias terminals of the first transistors serve as inputs for the amplifier circuit. The output node of each first transistor serves as an output for the amplifier circuit and is respectively coupled to the bias terminal of the second transistor of the same differential pair. The amplifier circuit has applications in a comparator circuit that also has a load circuit, which may have active components or only passive components. The amplifier circuit may also be used as a sense amplifier in a receiver of a communications system.
Abstract: The present invention relates to improved diagnostic agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and optical imaging. In particular, this invention relates to MRI and optical imaging agents that allow for the sensitive detection of a specific bloactivity within a tissue. These agents are prodrug contrast agents which are bioactivated in vivo in the presence of the specific bioactivity. This invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising these agents and to methods of using the agents and compositions comprising the agents.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for identifying nucleotide fragments that contain an open reading frame are provided. Compositions comprise a nucleotide sequence that encodes, in each of the three possible reading frames, an ATG start codon and a histidine tag, and vectors comprising such a nucleotide sequence. The vectors may be provided with cloning sites for insertion of nucleotide sequences of interest 5′ or 3′ to the 3-frame His-tag DNA sequence. Vectors also are provided with cloning sites for inserting nucleotide sequences of interest 3′ of the ATG start codon and 5′ of the 3-frame His-tag DNA sequence.

Abstract: The invention describes catabolism of A&bgr; by endothelin converting enzymes (ECEs). Methods of identifying compounds that upregulate ECEs are provided by the invention. Further provided by the invention are methods of regulating A&bgr; catabolism in a cell and methods of decreasing the amount of A&bgr; in a cell. The invention discloses methods of diagnosing an individual with AD and methods of treating such an individual. The invention further discloses methods of identifying compounds that have anti-hypertension activity but do not cause an increase in the level of A&bgr;. Further, the invention provides mutant ECE nucleic acids and mutant ECE polypeptides.

Abstract: Approaches are described for separating plasma from whole blood samples and include the use of magnetically attractable particles associated with an agglutinating agent. The magnetically attractable particles bind the cellular components in a whole blood sample. Application of a magnetic field gradient to a container with the blood sample and the magnetically attractable particles draws the particles to the surface of the container near the source of the magnetic field gradient. The plasma can be removed and stored or used for monitoring or detecting analytes in the plasma.

Abstract: An apparatus is described that efficiently resupplies radioactive seeds to a brachytherapy applicator. A seed-holding system includes a holder and a transfer device. The holder, which may be disposable, stores the radioactive seeds and the transfer device, which may be reusable, helps shield and dispense the seeds. The holder is coupled to the transfer device, and the apparatus is mated to an applicator. After seeds have been dispensed, the apparatus may be disconnected from the applicator and the empty holder may be ejected from the transfer device, and replaced with a full holder.
