  • Patent number: 5111818
Abstract: An ambulatory physiological evaluation system including a main and background gamma radiation detector provided in a vestlike garment worn by a patient for the purpose of monitoring and/or diagnosing the patient's physiological activities during a prescribed period of time. Also included is an apparatus and method for determining the exact location of the left ventricle of the heart, positioning the main radiation detector relative to the left ventricle, and maintaining the position of the main radiation detector relative to the left ventricle during an ambulatory study period. The ambulatory physiological evaluation system also contains electronic circuitry which monitors and processses information obtained from the radiation detectors. • Patent number: 5112017
Abstract: The present invention comprises a holder (2) for a beaker (10) containing a drink, in the form of a hollow cylindrical body for receiving said beaker which leaves a gap (12) between the beaker and the body thereby allowing a through-flow of air across the surface of the beaker. The hollow cylindrical body may include a number of protrusions (14) or sticky strips (16) in order to provide sufficient friction between the beaker and the holder. The body may be fabricated from the relatively rigid or relatively soft material. Using the holder enables the drink to be drunk at its proper temperature. Furthermore, it is simple, inexpensive and reuseable.

  • Patent number: 5112289
Abstract: In a device for transversely welding and cutting tubular film into bags, feed rolls advance the film to a gripping rail which grips the leading end of the film during operation of cutting and welding devices located behind the gripping rail in the direction of feed. To ensure proper tensioning of the film, the feed rollers are reversed after the film is gripped and prior to operation of the cutting and welding devices.

  • Patent number: 5113437
Abstract: A signal identification system, suitable for producing an identification code on a sound track recording is described. The system includes an encoder 209 effective to eliminate a variable sequence of frequency bands from an audio signal and insert a sequence of code signals into the frequency bands. • Patent number: 5112377
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of toughening a glass sheet by heating it to a temperature above the strain point and quenching the heated glass sheet with blasts of air. The heated glass sheet is positioned between two oppositely arranged blastheads, each of which has a plurality of first nozzles and a plurality of second nozzles. The first nozzles are connected to a supply of compressed air, and the compressed air is forced to rapidly expand so as to produce a shock wave and have a first predetermined pressure at the exit of each of the first nozzles. Simultaneously, cooling air is supplied from a blower to the second nozzles so as to have a second predetermined pressure, which is higher than the first predetermined pressure, at the exit of each of the second nozzles. The difference between the second and first predetermined pressures is not more than 0.05 kg/cm.sup.2.

  • Patent number: 5113376
Abstract: In seismic surveys in waters covered with ice, where seismic impulses are actuated under water and reflected signals are detected by a streamer cable (2) towed behind a vessel (1), in order to avoid the source of noise located outside the seismic system due to the icebreaking operation of the vessel (1) the vessel (1) is stopped during active survey and the streamer cable (3) is hauled in with a speed corresponding to the desired propulsion speed of the cable during detection. After detection the vessel again resumes ordinary operational speed and the streamer is paid out with a speed which maintains the desired advancing speed of the system.

  • Patent number: 5113056
Abstract: The stored-spring-energy actuator mechanism (210) for the high-voltage circuit breaker (218) has a spiral spring (216) which can be loaded by means of the loading device (212). The high-voltage circuit breaker (218) can be switched on once and off once with the energy stored in the loaded spiral spring (216). The energy stored in the fluid-pressure accumulator (258) is sufficiently great to charge the spiral spring (216) at least once. The working-stroke movement of the piston rod (242) in arrow direction (A) is transformed via the gear segment (236) into a rotation through 360.degree. of the gear (232) meshing with this gear segment (236). The spiral spring (216) is thereby loaded via the loading lever (230).

  • Patent number: 5111583
Abstract: A bladed implement such as a knife, has a flexible blade extending from a handle. The blade can be rigidified for use by a series of slides which run along a slot in the blade and which can be forced into and held in end to end contact by an operating mechanism in the handle. The endmost slide engages a stop at the distal end of the slot. When the operating mechanism is released, the slides are free to separate and the flexibility of the blade is restored.

  • Patent number: 5112583
Abstract: The chromic anhydride contained in soluble form (chromic acid) in exhausted, polluted chromium plating baths is recovered by alkalizing the exhausted chromium plating liquid to a pH comprised between 3 and 7 at a temperature of 70.degree. C. with a commercial sodium hydroxide solution, keeping the mass in reaction at this temperature for an hour and filtration separating the precipitate obtained. The filtered solution having a specific gravity of 1.25 kg/l, contains CrO.sub.3 (22% in weight) which is then reduced with sulphur dioxide to obtain a solution containing basic chromium sulphate and sodium sulphate, suitable for use as a tanning bath; in this manner pollution is avoided and the waste chromium is exploited. The solution containing CrO.sub.3 can also be introduced into a hexavalent chromium salt production cycle.

  • Patent number: 5111317
Abstract: A ferroelectric liquid crystal device has a first state (T.sub.X1) of maximum transmission, a second state (T.sub.X2) of minimum transmission and a value of voltage pulse width (t.sub.S) and voltage pulse height (V.sub.S) sufficient for a switching pulse to switch the cell from the first state (T.sub.X1) to the second state (T.sub.X2) or vice versa. A method of controlling the transmission of electromagnetic radiation through the ferroelectric liquid crystal device comprises the step of applying, for a time period greater than said value of pulse width (t.sub.S), a plurality of consecutive controlling pulses of one polarity. Each controlling pulse is itself of insufficient pulse height and pulse width to switch the cell from the first state (T.sub.X1) to the second state (T.sub.X2) or vice versa.

  • Patent number: 5110935
Abstract: The invention relates to new quinoline derivatives containing a free amine group and having antimalarial properties, in particular new primaquine derivatives or their addition salts with acids, and to a method for preparing them.According to the invention, these new derivatives are represented schematically by the formula:PQ-Xin which PQ denotes quinolines containing a free amine group and having antimalarial properties, in particular primaquine; X denotes an amino acid or a peptide of 2 to 4 amino acids; and the PQ-X bond being a covalent peptide bond between the free amine group of PQ and the carboxyl group of X, the PQ-X covalent bond being stable in serum and resistant to lysosomal hydrolases. In an embodiment of the invention, the amino acid or the first amino acid of a peptide linked to PQ is gamma-L-glutamic acid or beta-aspartic acid linked to PQ via their beta- or gamma-carboxyl group, or L-pyroglutamic acid or aspartic acid linked to PQ via their alpha-carboxyl group.
