  • Patent number: 6114979
Abstract: A coding circuit of the present invention converts n-bit binary data word at a prescribed clock cycle (t) into to an m-trit ternary code word, where n and m are integers and n.gtoreq.m. The coding circuit includes an (x) number of storage elements or latches and a (y) number of coders, each storage element or latch receiving (m.div.x) bits of the binary data word at a clock cycle of (t.div.x). After a prescribed delay period, a corresponding storage element or latch outputs the sampled bits to a corresponding coder at an increasing or decreasing edge of the clock signal. Each coder codes the sampled bits to (m.div.y) ternary code. The each of the coders outputs (m.div.y) ternary code onto a corresponding signal line of a bus. Hence, the coding circuit outputs m-trit ternary code word onto the bus. An exemplary coding circuit is illustrated where n=8, m=6, t=25 MHz, x=2 and y=2, and D flip-flops are used for the storage elements and latches.

  • Patent number: 6081200
Abstract: A radio pager includes a decoder for decoding coded data transmitted from a central office at a predetermined interval. The decoder classifies the data into one of traffic information and a call number, and informs a control unit of the result. If the identification information of the received data is identical to the identification information stored in the pager, an address decoder stores the traffic information and a call number in a separate address of a memory according to a control signal of the control unit. In addition to traffic information, various information such as weather, stocks, alternate routes, etc., can be transmitted to the pager to increase its usefulness.

  • Patent number: 6078838
Abstract: A signal processing apparatus and method for neural stimulation is provided that can generate stochastic independent activity across an excited nerve or neural population. High rate pulse trains, for example, can produce random spike patterns in auditory nerve fibers that are statistically similar to those produced by spontaneous activity in the normal ear. This activity is called "pseudospontaneous activity". Varying rates of pseudospontaneous activity can be created by varying the intensity of a fixed amplitude, high rate pulse train stimulus, e.g., 5000 pps. The pseudospontaneous activity can eliminate a major difference between acoustic- and electrical-derived hearing percepts. The pseudospontaneous activity can further desynchronize the nerve fiber population as a treatment for tinnitus.

  • Patent number: 6049367
Abstract: The present invention provides a high brightness subtractive color filter formed by an electro-optic modulator positioned between two retarder stacks. The second retarder stack echoes the first retarder stack, having the same sequence of retardances but in reverse order and having an orientation rotated with respect to the first stack. The modulator changes the apparent orientation of the second stack so that, in a first switching state of the modulator the two stacks cooperate in filtering the spectrum of input light, and in a second switching state they vanish, leaving white light. Two or more stages can be used in series, each stage providing independent analog control of a primary color. One preferred embodiment eliminates internal polarizers between stages, thereby providing a full-color display with only two neutral polarizers. Hybrid filters can be made using the filter of this invention in combination with other active or passive filters.
