  • Patent number: 5194859
Abstract: Apparatus and method for positioning a tool, such as a surveying instrument, in the deviated section of a borehole includes a flexible rod and a positioning assembly. The flexible rod extends from the vertical section into the deviated section of the borehole with the tool being connected to the downhole end of the rod. The positioning assembly is connected to the uphole end of the rod for positioning the downhole end of the rod in the deviated section of the borehole when the positioning assembly and the uphole end of the rod are in the vertical section of the borehole. In one embodiment, the positioning assembly is a biasing assembly, such as a weight, for urging the downhole end of the rod and tool into the deviated section. In another embodiment, the positioning assembly is an orienting assembly for rotationally orienting the rod and tool in the borehole as the rod is lowered into the borehole.

  • Patent number: 5194633
Abstract: A process for preparing 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) propane anhydride is disclosed. 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4 -dimethylphenyl) propane is oxidized under liquid phase conditions in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas, bromine and heavy metal catalyst components to 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) propane in high yield. Addition of an anhydride of a low molecular weight carboxylic acid to the oxidation reaction mixture converts the 1,1,1-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)propane to 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) propane anhydride.

  • Patent number: 5191786
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for determining the concentration of relatively low molecular weight target components in a liquid. The method involves commingling the liquid with a diluent to form a liquid-diluent mixture, stripping the target components from the liquid-diluent mixture, and passing the stripped target components to a detection zone wherein the concentration of each target component is determined absent the separate analysis for each component.

  • Patent number: 5192422
Abstract: A stream containing kerogen-rich and mineral-rich oil shale particles flow in a downward helical course such that the stream is confined in a manner to give the stream an outer and upper side having a first depth and comprising a substantial amount of said kerogen-rich particles, and an inner and lower side having a second depth and comprising a substantial amount of said mineral-rich particles, the first depth being greater than the second depth. The kerogen-rich and mineral-rich particles are subsequently separated in order to recover the kerogen-rich particles. The mineral-rich particles are further processed using froth flotation.

  • Patent number: 5191035
Abstract: Blends of a polyether sulfone and the polyimide of the dianhydride sulfonyl bis(phthalic anhydride) ("SPAN") and the diamine 1,4-bis(p-aminocumyl)benzene ("BAP"). The blends will comprise from about 10 to about 90 wt % polyether sulfone, preferably greater than about 50 wt % polyether sulfone, based on the total weights of polyether sulfone and polyimide. The blends exhibit good toughness and improved thermal performance over polyether sulfone alone while remaining readily processable, and have good mechanical properties including unexpectedly high stiffness as determined by high tensile modulus values. Blends of this invention also are surprisingly miscible, defined as exhibiting a single Tg value.

  • Patent number: 5189095
Abstract: A first reactor is used to graft polystyrene to a rubber-like polymer. A second reactor is used to obtain a mixture of styrene and polystyrene. The effluent from both the first and the second reactors are fed into a quiescent reaction zone where phase inversion occurs. The phase inverted material is fed into post inversion reactors to substantially complete the polymerization of the styrene monomer, and any unreacted styrene monomer is driven off to form the improved high-impact polystyrene.

  • Patent number: 5186904
Abstract: A laboratory instrument provides a small model reactor which better simulates a back mixed reactor containing a catalyst. The reactor is especially valuable for simulating commercial scale hydrotreating of petroleum resid, coal, and other non-distillable hydrocarbons to obtain some distillable products. An important feature is a magnetically driven pump completely enclosed within the reactor shell of the simulator. All embodiments provide a high temperature and pressure, low liquid to catalyst volume, model reactor where an entire process is carried out within the simulator shell under substantially the conditions prevailing in the full scale reactor.
