Patent number: 4428847Abstract: The invention relates to a method for protecting anode studs by coating the anode studs with an outermost surface layer of titanium diboride, zirconium diboride, titanium carbide, zirconium carbide, or mixtures thereof. The anode studs which are specifically to be protected in this instance are anode studs for electrolytic cells for the production of aluminum. The steel anode stud is conventionally subject to high corrosion rates due to the atmosphere in the aluminum furnace, and the industry has long sought means to protect this stud from corrosion without inhibiting electrical conductivity, while providing high temperature resistance to oxidation, and thermal shock resistance. It is also necessary that any coating applied to the steel anode stud be compatible with the carbon mass which is utilized as the anode per se. In accordance with the present invention, coatings of titanium diboride, zirconium diboride, titanium carbide, zirconium carbide, and mixtures thereof, have been found effective.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1982Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: Martin Marietta CorporationInventors: Larry G. Patent number: 4340888Abstract: A scan linearization device for use in a system that produces graphic images by means of nonlinear scanning elements which produce a multiplicity of scanning lines by scanning an array of emitters. The device introduces externally generated digitally coded signals representative of a desired image by quantizing a scanning line into a discrete number of periods and energizing appropriate emitters during each of such periods. An electrical scan waveform is picked off from the scanning elements and contains the nonlinearities. A staircase waveform is generated having equal amplitude steps and is compared to the scan waveform. When the amplitude of the scan waveform exceeds the amplitude of a step, the next step is generated resulting in a non-uniform temporal spacing of the amplitude steps complementary to the nonlinearities of the scan. The emitters are sequentially energized by each step such that the scan nonlinearities are compensated and an undistorted graphic image is produced.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1980Date of Patent: July 20, 1982Assignee: Martin Marietta CorporationInventor: James M. Patent number: 4324285Abstract: Apparatus having a high temperature probe and a low temperature probe, with each probe adapted to make thermal contact with a microelectronic device under test for sequentially heating the device first to a preselected high temperature and then cooling the device to a preselected low temperature. A control system is provided, connected to each of the probes by a small diameter, flexible cable. Each probe is a small, box-like structure having a heat sink as a base, a resistance heater attached to the heat sink, and a heat-sensing diode embedded in the heat sink. The control system senses the heat sink temperature and controls current through the heater to maintain the heat sink at a preselected temperature. The high temperature probe is placed on the top surface of a device under test and serves to add heat quickly thereto to bring the device to a preselected temperature above ambient.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1979Date of Patent: April 13, 1982Assignee: Martin Marietta CorporationInventor: G. Patent number: 4309746Abstract: An emitting diffuser of electromagnetic radiation constructed as a three-dimensional body containing a reflective optical cavity. The cavity is coated with a highly reflective diffusion material over substantially its entire interior. The remaining interior surface is a transparent or translucent diffusion material forming a radiation exiting window, with the window geometry being selected to give a desired radiation pattern. The diffuser may receive energy from a laser source through an interconnecting light pipe, protecting near observers from the potentially eye damaging source emitted radiation. The light diffuser may be operated as a simulated target for laser-type target identification and tracking systems. A preferred embodiment of this invention is a hollow sphere in which the window is ring-shaped, and located substantially equidistant from the equatorial and upper polar region of the sphere.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1978Date of Patent: January 5, 1982Assignee: Martin Marietta CorporationInventor: Paul M. Patent number: 4299360Abstract: A beam of electromagnetic radiation is spatially encoded using a digital frequency diversity technique. The spatial encoding defines the beam cross-section into a series of resolution elements each identified by a different digital code. The codes defining resolution elements are detectable by an object, such as a missile, located in the radiation beam and can be used to locate the object in this beam. In the preferred embodiment, an encoding mask, moved through the beam, provides the digital frequency modulation. The mask is provided with a series of bit areas, each of which bears at least two sets of cyclically recurring bands effective to modulate a detectable parameter of the radiation, such as intensity. The spacing between adjacent bands of a set, termed a bit cycle, is proportional to a predetermined frequency of beam parameter modulation. The novel arrangement enables the object to identify its position within the beam under conditions of severe atmospheric turbulence and object induced perturbations.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Assignee: Martin Marietta CorporationInventor: Allen C.
