Abstract: A piano mechanism for correlating the movement of the damper with the movement of the hammer consists of a hammer lifter connected between the hammer arm and the damper arm at a location on the side of its axis opposite to that of the damper itself.
Abstract: A combined ion source capable of operating either in an electron-impact-ionization mode or in a chemical ionization mode and being quickly shiftable from one mode to the other, consists of a cavity into which either a sample gas can be introduced to be ionized alone or together with a reaction gas introduced into the cavity, the cavity having at least one opening for the introduction of ionizing particles, or radiation, into the cavity and another opening for the discharge of ions, with a flexible band covering the exterior surface of the cavity between the openings, the band having suitable patterns of openings, each of which patterns cooperates with the various openings to provide a specific combination of openings and at the same time adjusting the width of each opening used in each combination.
Abstract: A V-belt for transmitting power has one or more flexible internal steel cord belts incorporated therein together with conventional textile reinforcing means. The steel cord belt reinforcement is in a plane parallel to the inner and outer parallel faces of the V-belt. The provision of the steel cord belt reinforcement minimizes belt cracking and materially increases belt tensile strength and stability without substantially lessening flexibility of the V-belt.
Abstract: A simplified extinguisher achieves a constant and uniform ratio between the impelling gas charge and the extinguishing material charge by directing the impelling gas downwardly into the discharge outlet at a lower level of the extinguisher charge; and expansion space for the extinguisher charge being provided to allow a mixing of the two charges at the outlet.
Abstract: Apparatus for magnetizing selected areas of data storage plates, sheets or discs of the type wherein the stored data is represented by the location and arrangement of these magnetized areas, consists of a series of pole pieces which can be shifted into contact with the selected areas and simultaneously excited by a magnetic field. The process is also claimed.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a tape recorder for a cassette having a magnetic tape. The tape recorder comprises a case for accommodating a cassette wherein are located a magnetic tape and reels for winding said magnetic tape, a winding reel shaft for supporting the winding reel, a capstan shaft for forwarding the magnetic tape at constant speed, an injecting lever for engaging and releasing the winding reel shaft and the capstan shaft to and from the case, and a lock plate for keeping said winding reel shaft and the capstan shaft off the case and, linked with the cassette, transferring the winding reel shaft and the capstan shaft so that the shafts may approach the case.
Abstract: A method for adjusting the position of the transparent triangular knife of a microtome with respect to a sample to be sectioned, consists of projecting a beam of light into the interior of the knife from below whereby an area of the sample above the knife edge will be illuminated by refraction of the projected beam from the upper sloping surface of the knife, the darkened area of the sample between the knife edge and the illuminated area constituting a measurement of the horizontal distance between the sample and the knife.
Abstract: A microwave oscillator comprises a wave-guide having a closed end with a semiconductor diode having a negative differential resistance for the frequency used placed in the wave-guide spaced from the closed end and electrically connected to two elements protruding inwardly from opposite walls of the wave-guide, with one of the elements being electrically isolated from the wall and having an unsymmetrical, rotatable body. The wave-guide may be conical if desired.
Abstract: An instrument for use in catheterization of small distal branch arteries includes a guide wire having a short flexible distal section connected with a relatively long, multi-wire, axial and rotary torque transmitting section to guide a soft, thin-walled, flexible catheter through the compound curves involved in the junctions between various arterial branches. A method for catheterization of blood vessels includes the steps of sequentially advancing the catheter and guide wire to negotiate these compound turns in the arterial system.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring temperature changes generated by enzyme activity consists in conducting a matrixbound enzyme through a flowpath formed by a helical coil and sensing the temperature in the immediate vicinity of the flowpath.
Abstract: A device for removing liquid from a test tube consists of an evacuation tube having a flexible plate extending outwardly from its lower end, the plate having a number of radial grooves connected at the center, so that by pressing the bottom of the test tube against the flexible plate, moisture can be removed by suction applied to the evacuation tube.
Abstract: According to the invention the specimen is given its desired design by pressing it towards a block, having a recess of the desired design and being cooled, preferably by liquid nitrogen.
Abstract: A rotary cutter for making the socket bed for a complete endoprosthesis is slidable on a guide rod, which rod is first inserted into a guide bore which has previously been made in the hip bone. The relative axial position of the cutter with respect to the rod indicates the depth of penetration of the cutter.

Abstract: An air filter system for an internal combustion engine comprises a caisson which contains a series of superposed compartments containing horizontal, removable filter elements, each of which elements is supported on a wedge-shaped slide which, in turn, is supported on an inclined wall which allows the slide and filter element to be removed from the inlet side of the caisson for replacement of the filter elements. The inclined walls are alternated with horizontal walls, the latter being provided with openings into which the filter elements are inserted, and the entire series of superposed compartments can be formed from a single sheet of metal bent into a zig-zag configuration.
Abstract: A process for preparing anisotropic permanent magnets from crude solidified cast bars of magnet material consists in etching the surface thereof to determine the crystalline structure of the several zones of the bar before subdividing it.
Abstract: A probe for electromagnetic measurement of the thickness of a layer of material applied to a base of dissimilar material consists of an elongated ferro-magnetic core surrounded by an electrical coil several diameters larger than the diameter of the core and having one end placed close to the plane of the pole face of the core so that measurements involving magnetic materials can be undertaken by utilizing variations in magnetic flux path at low energization frequencies while measurements involving electrically conductive materials are undertaken by utilizing eddy currents induced at high energization frequencies.

Abstract: This invention makes it possible to use mechanically hard magnetic materials in the formation of one, or both, of the annular press rams used in closing the mold because at least one of the rams is not permitted to enter the mold a distance sufficient to short circuit the magnetic flux flowing radially between the center ram and the outer wall of the mold.
Abstract: Cushioning pads are placed along the sides of a trampoline and have sufficient width to cover the ordinarily exposed springs. The sides of the trampoline frame are reinforced by an extra tube which assists in supporting the pads out of frictional contact with the springs.
