  • Patent number: 4494487
Abstract: An engine efficiency device is provided for use in conjunction with an internal combustion engine having an air intake means, such as a carburetor, for mixing fuel with the inducted air to form a combustible charge for the engine. The engine efficiency device comprises a source of petroleum distillates and a pump which feeds the petroleum distillates from the source and into the inducted air flow to the engine continuously during the operation of the engine. In the preferred form of the invention, the petroleum distillate is an aliphatic petroleum naptha-mineral spirit produced by the process of alkylation.

  • Patent number: 4491934
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for data compression and decompression of redundant serial data. The first and second elements of the serial data are combined to form a first pair group which is assigned a code designation and stored in a group list. Thereafter, the code designation of the previous pair group and the next element are combined to form a further pair group which is assigned to form a further code designation and this process is reiterated until a closing character is reached. For the second and subsequent sequences of serial data, the elements of the code data are combined and assigned a code designation as discussed above but with further checking to determine whether the first pair group is identical with the first pair group of a previously stored data component.

  • Patent number: 4490250
Abstract: The present invention provides a fluid filtering system for an aquarium having a tank in which water and marine animals are contained. The filtering system includes a pump, a filter element and a valve assembly fluidly connected therebetween. In addition, a pump actuator is movable between a first position and a second position in which the pump inlet and outlet are inverted. Actuation of the valve assembly to a first position and with the pump actuator in its first position allows the pump to pump water from the aquarium tank under pressure to and through the filter element after which the cleaned water is returned to the aquarium tank. Conversely, with the valve assembly and pump actuator in their second positions, the pump draws water from the aquarium tank, through the filter element and the cleaned water is then returned by the pump to the aquarium tank. Pressure pumping, i.e.

  • Patent number: 4488840
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool which comprises an elongated body attached to be rotatably driven around its longitudinal axis. An axially extending slot is formed at one end of the body while a cutting insert having a cutting edge is axially insertable into the slot. A pair of diverging abutment surfaces on the body extend inwardly into the slot. These abutment surfaces cooperate with diverging mounting edges formed on the cutting insert to automatically orient the cutting insert upon insertion into the slot to a predetermined position with respect to the body. The cutting insert is secured to the body in a conventional manner, such as soldering.

  • Patent number: 4486995
Abstract: An insulating panel which comprises at least one layer of polystyrene covered on at least one side by a layer of cellulose. Preferably, the cellulose is intermixed with an adhesive and sprayed onto the polystyrene and the adhesive, and upon curing, bonds the cellulose together and to the polystyrene layer; or, alternatively, the cellulose material is molded into a pad or panel which is subsequently bonded to the polystyrene layer. The exposed side of the cellulose layer is in turn covered with a vinyl or other decorative coating to form the insulating panel. The overall insulating panel exhibits a very high R value and thus has a very low coefficient of thermal conductivity.

  • Patent number: 4485672
Abstract: A tamper-proof cover for a fluid flow monitor comprises a guard portion at least partly disposed about the monitor when the cover sealingly engages the fluid system in which the monitor is disposed. Preferably, the cover comprises an assembly including a plate fixed to the cover of the flow monitor to seal the interior of the device. Access to the monitor and alarm or actuator circuits disposed therein is impeded by the assembly so long as the cover seals the fluid system, and access thereto requires breaching the fluid system by removing the cover.

  • Patent number: 4484655
Abstract: A gearless transmission providing pressurized hydraulic fluid to torque motors for driving a vehicle. A hydraulic pump is driven by a turbine engine shaft to provide fluid to accumulators and then to the transmission device. Fluid is selectively admitted into the transmission by the vehicle accelerator pedal. Thereafter the fluid flow may be restricted through fluid circuitry having orifices which provide variable torque output. The circuitry is controlled by a shifter selector with pilot lines to actuate fluid control valves between two control positions. Especially important for turbine-powered vehicles, the transmission provides a braking function when the accelerator pedal is released in either the low or second control range of operation. Means for providing a reverse mode of operation is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4484293
Abstract: A dimensional measurement system comprises a plurality of operating arms simultaneously controlled and monitored by a computer system wherein each of the arms includes a support structure for a measurement end and includes orthoganally displaceable members enabling three dimensions of orthoganal movement of the measurement end. The displaceable members preferably comprise a first carriage slidably engaged with a support beam, a sliding beam slidably secured to the first carriage, a second carriage secured to the sliding beam, and a second sliding beam slidably secured to the second carriage, wherein the support for the measurement end is on the end of the second sliding beam. The beams preferably include racks engaged by motor driven gears to provide controlled displacement of the displaceable members. The computer system preferably simultaneously controls movement of the arms as well as delivery of workpieces to the arms.

  • Patent number: 4481869
Abstract: A fluid operated device comprising an elongated housing defining an elongated interior cylinder and an elongated slot formed along one side of the housing and open to the cylinder. A piston is longitudinally, slidably mounted in the cylinder and forms a first chamber in the cylinder between one end of the housing and one end of the piston and a second chamber between the other end of the housing and the other end of the piston. Fluid seals are provided around each end of the piston. In addition, an elongated band constructed of a magnetic material is secured within the cylinder and is of sufficient width so that the band covers the housing slot. A pair of elongated flexible magnets are secured to the housing along the slot to magnetically attract the band against the housing and thus sealingly close the housing slot along the cylinder chambers.

  • Patent number: 4480763
Abstract: A beverage container or can comprising a main body having a top and defining an interior chamber in which the beverage is contained. The top wall includes a portion surrounded by a score while a tab is secured to the can top. One end of the tab registers with the scored portion while the other end of the tab extends outwardly from the scored portion. The other end of the tab is also spaced upwardly from the can top so that the tab can be easily grasped and pulled outwardly from the can whereupon the first end of the tab engages the scored portion and punches the scored portion into the interior of the can. In the preferred form of the invention, the scored portion is formed on an upwardly inclined portion of the can top which forms a spout.

  • Patent number: 4471686
Abstract: A double acting piston and cylinder arrangement comprising an elongated cylinder and a piston assembly slidably mounted within the cylinder. The piston assembly comprises a first part and a second part which are axially adjacent each other and movable with respect to each other between a locking and nonlocking position. In the locking position, the piston assembly forces a split ring radially outwardly and against the walls of the cylinder to lock the piston assembly to the cylinder at any adjusted position. Conversely, in its nonlocking positon the ring contracts radially inwardly and permits the piston assembly to freely axially slide along the cylinder.
