  • Patent number: 5472796
Abstract: There is provided a metallic composite useful for coinage. The core is formed from a copper alloy that contains between 50% and 99.0% copper, has a room temperature electrical conductivity in excess of 25% IACS an initial yield strength in excess of 10,000 psi and a dynamic softening response onset at a temperature in the range of 200.degree. C.-400.degree. C. The cladding layers have an initial yield strength more than that of the core and a gold color. The strengthening response of the core during cladding is similar to that of the cladding layers making the metallic composites resistant to corrugation. Reducing corrugation increases the sensitivity of electromagnetic coin discriminators.

  • Patent number: 5471931
Abstract: A water resistant shotshell has an internal moisture seal to preclude moisture intrusion into the propellant charge. The seal is at least one flexible tapered lip on the plastic shot wad which is compressed against the inside surface of the shotshell tube over the powder charge. The preferred embodiment is a two piece shot wad having a shot cup portion and a wad portion. The wad portion has a central disk portion and a tubular rim terminating in a pair of opposing flexible lips which provide a dual moisture seal.

  • Patent number: 5471833
Abstract: There is provided a system for expelling a liquid fuel component from a tank to a rocket engine utilizing a pressurized gas to displace the propellant. A pressurized high vapor pressure liquid is combined with the pressurized gas reducing the volume of pressurizing agent required to expel a desired volume of the liquid fuel component. Since the volume of pressurizing gas is less, the weight of the propelled craft may be reduced or additional fuel carried. In another embodiment of the invention, the vapor phase of the high vapor pressure liquid is used as a reference pressure to control other systems.

  • Patent number: 5464961
Abstract: There is disclosed an anode for an arcjet thruster which resists erosion during start-up on constriction during steady-state operation. The anode includes a converging upstream portion, a diverging downstream portion and a constricted portion disposed therebetween. In one embodiment of the invention, rails formed in the constricted portion accelerate the passage of an arc during start-up reducing erosion. In a second embodiment, a higher strength material resists bulging as a result of the thermal gradient within the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 5449041
Abstract: An apparatus for suppressing a fire comprises a gas generator in communication with a vaporizable liquid by means of a first conduit. When activated, the gas generator generates an elevated temperature burst of a first gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and/or water vapor. This first gas vaporizes substantially all of the vaporizable liquid, generating a second gas having flame suppressing capabilities. The second gas is directed at the fire to suppress and extinguish it.

  • Patent number: 5423384
Abstract: An apparatus for suppressing a fire comprises a gas generator containing a propellant and a fire suppressant as a mixture of compacted powders. The average diameter of a fire suppressant particle is larger than the average diameter of a propellant particle and the larger fire suppressant particles form discrete cooling sites that do not dramatically reduce the propellant burn rate.

  • Patent number: 5415225
Abstract: There is provided heat exchange tube formed from a ductile metal strip which is formed into a generally circular configuration with the opposing longitudinal edges of the strip welded together. Both surfaces of the strip are enhanced. On one surface, the enhancement constitutes parallel rows of vertical fins separated by channels. Conduits which run along the channels and are located at the base of one side of the fins facilitate bending of the fins about the fin base to form a nucleate boiling surface. On the opposing surface of the tube, the enhancement constitutes parallel rows of protrusions separated by a distance effective to generate turbulence in a fluid passing along the second surface. In a preferred embodiment, the protrusions are in the form of truncated cones.

  • Patent number: 5399805
Abstract: There is provided an electronic package where the package components define a cavity. A semiconductor device and a portion of a leadframe occupy part of the cavity. Substantially the remainder of the cavity is filled with a compliant polymer, such as a silicone gel. Since the cavity is no longer susceptible to gross leak failure, the seal width of adhesives used to assemble the package may be reduced, thereby increasing the area available for mounting the semiconductor device.
