  • Patent number: 5440096
Abstract: In an arc welding process for welding pipes used to convey high purity gas, dispersion of particles into the pipes during welding is reduced by discharging an inert back shielding gas into one end of one pipe and holding the welding current at less than the normal welding current for a specified interval after the start of arc, the welding current thereafter being increased to its normal level.

  • Patent number: 5433533
Abstract: In a bearing having inner and outer rings concentrically disposed about a bearing axis, the outer ring is provided with an annular mounting groove in an inner surface facing the axis for receiving a shield plate. The shield plate is an annular disk-like plate having a central opening for receiving the inner ring as the shield plate is mounted between the rings. The shield plate has an annular generally V-shaped groove in a surface facing in the axial direction, the groove being bounded on the outer circumferential side by a first portion of the plate having a nearly triangular shape, and bounded on the inner circumferential side by a second portion of the plate. The first portion of the plate has a thickness in the radial direction which is 1/2 to 1/6 the thickness of the second portion, and a height in the axial direction which is 1/2 to 1/5 the thickness of the second portion.

  • Patent number: 5432415
Abstract: An automatically controlled cleaning device (14) for removing visibility-impairing foreign matter, e.g. rain, snow or mud, from the surface of a window such as a motor vehicle windscreen (8). The device uses a sensor such as an ultrasonic transducer (12a, 12b) in which the frequency (f) and the spacing (d) between the transmitter (12a) and the receiver (12b) enable the presence of foreign matter to be detected simply by measuring the phase difference between the transmitted signal and the received signal. This device may be used in automatic wiper systems or the like.

  • Patent number: 5432418
Abstract: The invention concerns a motor system of an electric type vehicle, comprising at least two asynchronous electric motors (M1, M2) supplied in parallel by a central electric supply. This central electric supply is controlled by a control device supplying thereto a first control signal (SCF) determining the value of the supply frequency (FAL) and a second control signal (SCA) determining the value of the supply amplitude (UAL) of the supply voltage. These first and second control signals are regulated essentially in dependence upon a signal (SMI) which is a measurement of the principal supply current (IAL), an instruction signal (SCS) and a signal (SFMX) representing the maximum value of the rotational frequency of the rotors (R2, R2) of said motors.

  • Patent number: 5429484
Abstract: A metallic diaphragm is provided within a pump chamber. This diaphragm is oscillated by a stem to Feed liquid medicine. The stem is provided with a plate and a movement of this plate, i.e., a stroke of the stem is limited by a pair of stoppers. Relative position of the paired stoppers at which they limit the stroke is adjusted by providing the paired stoppers with threads which are handed reversely to each other so that the paired stoppers are moved by amounts equal to each other during a change of the relative position. The stem carries thereon a piston which is, in turn, vertically movable within a cylinder chamber into which compressed air is introduced to oscillate the stem. A plurality of such pumps are successively connected one to another, stop valves are connected upstream as well as downstream off the respective pumps and a suck-back pump of the same construction as the liquid feed pump is connected immediately before a liquid filling device.

  • Patent number: 5429620
Abstract: A calibrated disconnect joint for use with indwelling urethral balloon catheters is included between main portions of a catheter-drainage tube (10) and a bag-drainage tube (16). The calibrated disconnect joint includes male and female portions (or tubularly-shaped wall members) (54, 60; 70, 72; 90, 92; 110, 112) with one of these being a ribbed portion and the other being a grooved portion. If a tension of between 1/2 pound and 4 pounds, preferably between 21/2 and 3 pounds, is applied to the calibrated disconnect joint, the ribbed and grooved portions separate from one another to allow the main portions of the catheter-drainage and bag-drainage tubes to separate. Valves (86, 88) which automatically close their respective lumens upon separation are included on each of the ribbed and grooved portions so that upon separation little or no fluid escapes and there is a barrier to bacteria invasion.

  • Patent number: 5430421
Abstract: A reed contactor includes a base plane comprising two distinct conducting zones. Two shafts of the contactor have the form of blades, each of which engages a base plane at the level of one of the conducting zones. One of the beams at least is supported on the base plane by means of a foot on which it is mounted in an overhanging manner. The contactor is formed by process comprising the steps of forming successively on a substrate an alternance of levels of photoresist and of metallization. At each step, the level of upper photoresist is configured to create in its thickness free growth spaces in which metal pins are formed by galvanic growth. The levels of photoresist situated under the last level of metallization play the role of sacrificial layers and allow the formation of suspended metallic structures.

  • Patent number: 5426274
Abstract: A push button switch, particularly a master switch, has housing-affixed contacts (4, 7) and at least one contact bridge (8, 9) movable by a spring plunger (10). A spring-switching mechanism (24, 25, 26) is operatively coupled between the spring plunger and a manually-movable sliding switch, or switch actuator, (22). A guiding, or sliding, locking linkage apparatus for the sliding switch (22), which includes two locking parts, a first of which is a track (27) and a second of which is a follower lever (28) for engaging the track. Upon alternate depressions of the sliding switch, the sliding switch alternately moves between "on" and "off" positions. In order to prevent damage to the locking apparatus upon a pulling of the sliding switch in a direction opposite to a direction of depression of the sliding switch, the first and second locking parts release from the housing to follow movement of the sliding switch.

  • Patent number: 5426054
Abstract: A determination of optimal energy insertion, or input, results from a measurement of opacity at various heights in a fluid coagulating system and at the same time from measuring a deviation width of the opacity at a lower measuring point. Simultaneously, a continuous comparison takes place of the opacity measured at the various measuring points, which changes with time, and a comparison of the deviation width of opacity. The optimal energy insertion in the fluid coagulating system is achieved if, at each point in time, the opacity at all measuring points is maintained approximately the same and the deviation width of the opacity is maintained at or near a maximum.

  • Patent number: 5421380
Abstract: A gas tank evacuator (10) comprises an evacuator housing (12) into which a neck (80) of a gas tank (82) can be screwed and an elongated valve-removal rod (14) for slidably passing through the evacuator housing and engaging and unscrewing a stem-actuated valve (88) of the gas tank. An elongated valve actuator pin (18) slidably passes through the valve-removal rod to extend from lower and upper ends of the valve-removal rod for independently actuating the stem-actuated valve. The valve-removal rod is moved longitudinally by a valve-removal-rod lever (16) which is pivotally attached to the evacuator housing and valve-removal rod by pivot links (60). The valve-removal-rod lever is pivoted on the evacuator housing to drive a valve-engaging device at a lower end of the valve-removal rod into engagement with the stem-actuated valve of the gas tank for its removal from the gas tank.

  • Patent number: 5421593
Abstract: A shaft seal device comprises two mechanical seals for sealingly separating a sealed fluid region from an atmospheric region. A shaft is rotatable about an axis and extends through a casing from a sealed fluid region to an atmospheric region. The mechanical seals separate the sealed fluid region and the atmospheric region by a purge region formed between the mechanical seals. Each mechanical seal comprises a first seal ring fixed on the shaft and a second seal ring slidable in the axial direction and pressed against the first seal ring. The mechanical seal separating the sealed fluid region from the purge region is a contact type seal so that the fluid pressure of the sealed fluid region acts as a back pressure on the second seal ring. The mechanical seal separating the atmospheric region from the purge region is non-contact type seal so that the fluid pressure of the purge region acts as a back pressure on the second seal ring.
