  • Patent number: 4289294
Abstract: The device includes a main flow control valve and associated packings designed for effective operation under extreme conditions associated with the pumping of high viscosity asphaltic crude wherein the formation includes toxic gases, and where the formation is produced using steam flooding techniques. The main valve seat and the associated valve closure, consisting of a reciprocating ram and packing plug, are coaxial with the pump polished rod. The valve seat includes tapered walls defining a shoulder which partially confronts the ram plug; and the ram plug is formed of a compressible material formed to the shape of the valve seat. The packing plug is retained on the end of the ram by axial tie rods and a retaining ring, which ring may engage the valve seat shoulder to effect axial compression of the packing plug between the retaining ring and ram face, and consequent radial expansion into sealing engagement.

  • Patent number: 4286791
Abstract: A gland body is coupled at its proximal end to a supporting housing by means of a union. A first packing chamber, for a static shutdown packing, is formed at the proximal end of the gland body, with a wedge ring forming the base of the chamber. The wedge ring has a beveled surface diverging outwardly from the base; and a packing body has a complementary beveled surface confronting the wedge ring. A mandrel having a reduced diameter proximal end is received within the gland body for urging the first packing toward the wedge ring. A second packing chamber is formed at the distal end of the gland body confronting the mandrel; and a packing cap threaded onto the distal end of the body compresses the second packing body to seal the mandrel and gland body. The distal end of the mandrel is enlarged to form a third packing chamber confronting the shaft for receiving a third packing body being a dynamic packing for the reciprocating shaft.

  • Patent number: 4286661
Abstract: A well testing tool system for isolating vertically spaced portions of a well bore and measuring well conditions such as pressure, and temperature. The system includes a wireline supported tool train and a locking sub connectible on a removable lock mandrel for releasably locking the tool train in a well bore. The tool train has a locking probe releasably connectible in the locking sub, a probe mandrel connected with the probe, an equalizing valve and shock absorber, and a gauge for measuring an operating condition in the well. The locking sub permits insertion of the probe at a low force and requires a larger force for withdrawal. The locking sub grips the probe with a force directly proportional to the pressure differential across the locking sub. The equalizing valve and shock absorber provides for pressure equalization across the tool train during handling and absorbs shock to protect the measuring device. Two forms of the valve and shock absorber are spring biased open.

The unit includes a spring loaded locking collet assembly arranged to engage a locking recess within the stem of a surface safety valve so that the spring force may be added to normal valve closing forces such as line pressure and valve stem springs to supplement such forces for insuring the cutting by the surface valve member of a wireline extending through the member. The actuator module has a body which rests on the safety valve body without the use of any connecting structure. The module also includes structure for hydraulically compressing the spring for connecting the module on a safety valve and for hydraulically shifting the latching collet assembly to a disengaging condition for releasing the module from a safety valve.

  • Patent number: 4153072
Abstract: A monitor-actuator pilot valve operable to close a safety valve in a fluid flow system reponsive to low line pressure or electrical failure. The safety valve is held open by pressure supplied into an actuator cylinder from the line protected by the safety valve. The pilot valve includes a first flow passage communicating with line pressure, a second flow passage communicating with the safety valve actuator cylinder, a third exhaust flow passage to the atmosphere, and a fourth flow passage to a fluid pressure reset. A valve assembly in the pilot valve responds to a low pressure in the first passage or electrical failure to connect the second and third passages for exhausting control pressure from the safety valve actuator cylinder to close the safety valve. An electromagnet on the pilot valve releases the valve assembly in response to a power failure allowing the safety valve to close. A reset assembly in the valve body manually or hydraulically operates the valve assembly reopening the pilot valve.
