  • Patent number: 5437119
Abstract: A pseudo lock gun trigger blocking structure deterring children and uninformed adults from being able to work the trigger and shoot a handgun, rifle or shotgun. A pseudo key member that has the outward appearance of a lock key tumbler is mounted in a first block half to extend to the interior thereof with an opening therethrough having buttress thread engaging grooves on the back side of the opening. The pseudo key member is resiliently biased by an internal spring to an outer position but is resiliently pushable inwardly to an inwardmost position when permitted by a blocking pin being pushed in to an unblocking position against the resilient bias of a spring to permit movement of the pseudo key member to its innermost position.

  • Patent number: 5425917
Abstract: An apparatus and method for attaching a labeled probe to macromolecules such as DNA/RNA fragments or proteins attached to a membrane utilizes a flexible bag having an inlet and an outlet port. Reagents including the probe to which the membrane is to be exposed during the labeling process are stored in reservoirs. Pumps are provided to selectively transfer reagents from reservoirs to the inlet port and for selectively evacuating the bag via the outlet port so that reagents from the individual reservoirs can be sequentially supplied to or removed from the bag while the membrane is positioned therein. One or more rollers are arranged to roll back and forth over the top of the bag to uniformly expose the membrane to the reagent within the bag.

  • Patent number: 5419467
Abstract: A two part spout assembly, where both tubular body and spout member are hollow and cylindrical. The inner tubular body is extended to a stopper dome-shaped nozzle with a large semi-elliptic opening. The spout member has a stopper coupling sleeve conforming to the stopper dome-shaped nozzle, with the semi-elliptic opening of the same size, protruding inwardly and formed integrally with the spout member wall. By rotatably sliding the spout member until it reaches the "off" mark the nozzle is placed to a position to complement the spout member to seal the container against the outflow of its contents through the spout. When rotated by 180 degrees, the two domes and openings are fully aligned and the spout is fully opened.

  • Patent number: 5415449
Abstract: A draw bar sling for lifting heavy loads such as railroad cars includes a lightweight rigid U-shaped saddle made, for example, of an aluminum alloy, having a central shelf for engaging the coupler tongue of the car and a concave passageway extending under the central section. A loop sling comprising a core bundle of high performance fibers, encased in a tubular abrasion resistant covering, extends in through the passageway to form two closed curve eye sections above the saddle through which a crane hook can be inserted to lift the coupler tongue. A cut proof sleeve surrounds each eye section to prevent the hook from cutting the high performance fibers. The cut proof sleeve comprises multiple layers of high performance fibers, and particularly Spectra, woven at right angles and sewn between sheets of abrasion resistant material.

  • Patent number: 5390762
Abstract: Method and apparatus for automatically changing engine lubricating oil while the engine is running, in which small increments of used lubricating oil are periodically removed from the lubricating oil system, and substantially simultaneously with the removal of each increment of used oil, a corresponding increment of fresh oil is delivered to the lubricating oil system, so the volume of oil in the lubricating system is not reduced by the removal. Oil sump level sensing determines the destination of each used oil increment that is removed. If the sump level is not substantially below a predetermined satisfactory operating level when an increment of used oil is removed, the increment is delivered to the fuel tank for burnoff with the fuel for diesel engines, or to a holding tank for other engines, in a normal oil change mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 5385042
Abstract: A dynamometer for testing engine powered vehicles including an induction motor coupled directly to the vehicle engine or the driven wheels thereof. A computer in response to the engine or wheel speed and the torque applied to or received from the engine or wheels by the motor provides a desired torque signal to a motor power controller to similate the road load and/or vehicle inertial forces encountered by the vehicle during actual operation and to compensate for the parasitic losses of the dynamometer. The motor power controller in turn applies a d.c. voltage to the motor when the desired torque signal is negative to cause the motor to absorb power from the engine or driven wheels and applies an a.c. voltage to the motor when the desired torque signal is positive to cause the motor to supply power to the engine or driven wheels in accordance with the parasitic losses and the road load and/or inertial forces to be simulated by the induction motor.

  • Patent number: 5383603
Abstract: An aspiration-type chemical sprayer for dispensing small quantities of a liquid based chemical into a stream of carrier fluid is disclosed. The sprayer includes a sprayer head assembly sealingly mounted onto a container holding chemicals such as pesticides or fertilizers. A carrier fluid control valve in the sprayer head assembly controls carrier fluid flow from a pressurized source of water past an aspiration orifice which forms the terminal end of an aspiration passageway in communication with the chemical within the container. A rod valve connects the aspiration orifice to the aspiration passageway and the container interior to atmospheric pressure when slid into an open position while providing simultaneous closure of the aspiration and vent passageways so as to seal the chemical in the container when slid into a closed position. The rod valve includes a pair of spaced annular integral sealing ridges and is molded in one piece of a plastic material.

  • Patent number: 5375460
Abstract: A chassis dynamometer apparatus and method for testing motor vehicles includes at least one roll for engaging the driven wheels of the vehicle. A power supplying and/or absorbing unit such as an electric motor supplies and/or absorbs power from the roll. In addition, a force transducer and speed sensor are coupled to the roll for providing force and speed signals. Signals representative of the desired vehicle inertia, the road load to be simulated, the forces attributable to the parasitic losses and the out-of-loop inertia of the dynamometer and vehicle are also provided. A system controller in response to the above signals controls the power supplying and/or absorbing unit in accordance with: ##EQU1## where: Vd=the desired roll velocity;Fm=the measured force signal associated with the roll;PL=the dynamometer parasitic loss signal;RL=the road load signal;Io=The out-of-loop inertia of the dynamometer and vehicle;Ac=the roll acceleration signal;Iv=the vehicle inertia signal; anddt=the interval of integration.

  • Patent number: 5324405
Abstract: A circuit and method of cathodically protecting ferrous metal structures such as pipelines or well casings is described disposed in a conductive medium such as the ground. A pair of terminals are connected to an anode spaced from the structure and to the structure. A source of d.c. voltage is periodically connected across the terminal to cause current to flow to the anode and provide electrons at the surface of the structure to inhibit ferrous molecules from going into solution and damaging the integrity of the structure. The current flow due to the induced emf caused by the reactive inductions of the anode/cathode system is limited to inhibit damage to neighboring ferrous structures by providing a high impedance, e.g. an open circuit, between the input terminals during all or part of the time that the d.c. source is not supplying current to the anode/cathode load.

  • Patent number: 5279721
Abstract: An automated electrophoresis and transfer apparatus for separating macromolecules in accordance with their molecular weight and transferring the same to a transfer membrane includes a housing having a perforated intermediate horizontal partition defining an upper reservoir and a lower chamber. A pair of spaced electrodes are provided for generating a horizontal electrical field. A pump is connected between a plurality of containers and the reservoir for sequentially pumping the chemical solutions within the container into the reservoir. A transfer membrane is positioned over the partition and an impermeable sheet is interposed between the membrane and the gel member and withdrawn prior to the transfer operation. A pump provides a small over pressure within the lower chamber which in cooperation with the impermeable sheet substantially prevents chemical solutions from penetrating the transfer membrane prior to the transfer operation.
