  • Patent number: 4376670
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying to a surface of a continuous travelling web of paper a regular mesh-like pattern of thermoplastic stripes or strands. The plastic stripes or strands are extruded from nozzles supported a short distance above the travelling web of paper, the nozzles being disposed at the bottom of extrusion heads oscillating transversely to the direction of travel of the web of paper. While the pattern of plastic stripes or strands is applied to a surface of the paper, a vacuum or suction plate disposed against the other surface of the paper draws the plastic through the pores of the paper. The web of paper is subsequently passed through a pair of compression rolls and is air-dried.

  • Patent number: 4375588
Abstract: A method and apparatus for machining, by electrical discharges, an electrode workpiece by means of an electrode tool, wherein machining fluid supplied by a nozzle to the machining zone between the electrode tool and the electrode workpiece is returned to a tank and circulated by a pump from the tank to the nozzle through two lines, one provided with a filter and the other having no filter but controlling the flow of fluid therethrough and comprising a solid particle proportioning device. The flow rate and proportioning device is controlled by an electrical signal for regulating the concentration of solid particles in suspension in the fluid, and the adjustment for the concentration of solid particles is effected on the basis of measuring the average delay of triggering of the machining electrical discharges.

  • Patent number: 4370536
Abstract: An EDM apparatus provided with an adaptive self-correcting system for achieving optimum maximum efficiency of machining operations. As the machining performance factor or index of an EDM apparatus continuously varies as a function of one of the machining parameters as, for example, the cut-off time interval between consecutive electrical discharges, such that the maximum performance index, achieved for a given optimum cut-off time interval, deteriorates rapidly when the cut-off time interval is shortened, thus resulting in poor and unstable machining conditions, the invention contemplates varying the cut-off time interval in successive steps, the steps being larger when operating along the negative slope portion of the representative curve of the performance index as a function of the cut-off time interval duration, and the steps being much smaller when operating within the portion of the representative curve having a positive slope.

  • Patent number: 4367392
Abstract: In a travelling wire EDM apparatus, the electrode tool in the form of a wire used for cutting an electrode workpiece is passed through a first zone in which the wire is straightened, preferably by exerting a pull on the wire while the wire is heated. The wire is subsequently cut-off at the bottom of the first zone, and the straightened portion of the wire is then threaded by a carriage through a hole pre-drilled in the workpiece, or through a cut in the workpiece in the event that the wire ruptures during machining, until the end of the wire is engaged in the wire conveyor mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4366956
Abstract: A rhythm indicating exercising device in the form of a generally tubular member having a preferably metallic mass or slug disposed freely slidable in the interior of the tubular member, each end of the tubular member being provided with an end closure preventing the mass or slug from escaping from the tubular member. In use, one tubular member is grasped in one hand or, preferably, a pair of tubular members are held one in each hand of a person while walking and more particularly while engaged in aggressive exercise walking, that is while walking at a fast pace with extensive swinging of the arms back and forth. At the end of each forward and backward stroke of the arm, the mass or slug is forcibly propelled by inertia within the tubular member and caused to strike the corresponding end closure, thus producing an impact knocking sound helping the walker to maintain an effective rhythm and providing beneficial advantages in indicating proper exercising of the arms in addition to the legs.

  • Patent number: 4367390
Abstract: A device for applying electrical current and voltage pulses between an electrode workpiece and an electrode tool, in the form of a wire or ribbon, in a travelling wire EDM apparatus, wherein a pulse generator providing such current and voltage pulses is connected across the electrodes. The travelling wire electrode is supported and guided by a pair of support and guide members and the pulse generator is connected across one of the support and guide members of the travelling wire electrode and the workpiece. A capacitor is connected across two contact members one engaged with the travelling wire electrode and the other with the workpiece, and is supported by one of the travelling wire support and guide members. The effect of the capacitor connected directly across the machining gap is to reduce considerably to a negligible value the inductance of the electrical circuit applying the current and voltage pulses across the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 4363949
Abstract: A correction system for a travelling wire EDM machine cutting a workpiece by means of a travelling electrode wire stretched between two guide members and comprising a pair of servo motors for effecting displacement of the guide members relative to their respective support arms, such as to incline the electrode wire relative to the workpiece for providing the cut in the workpiece with an appropriate predetermined conicity or draft. One of the servo motors providing such displacement is, in addition, controlled such as to compensate for thermally-induced expansions or contractions of one of the support arm guide members relative to the other.

  • Patent number: 4363430
Abstract: Apparatus having a pair of arms that are oppositely directed and which are adapted to suspend a garment includes a hook that is located intermediate the free ends of the arms for suspending the hanger and garment from a rail. In one embodiment, a bar that is substantially rigid and inflexible has one end secured to the hook and extends downwardly therefrom. Another embodiment includes a crossmember that joins the free end of the arms and the secured end of the bar is swingably attached to the crossmember. A further embodiment retains the bar in a swingably captive position on the crossmember. In still another embodiment, the arms, crossmember, hook and bar comprise an integral, unitary structure that is more simple to construct. The bar in each embodiment has a smooth, regular surface to prevent snagging the garment and it is sufficiently long to prevent rolling up the hanger and garment into a small size which otherwise would facilitate its theft.

  • Patent number: 4362989
Abstract: A process and apparatus for monitoring the concentration of electrically conductive solid particles in suspension in a fluid by circulating the fluid between a pair of electrodes opposed surfaces disposed at a fixed distance from each other, the electrodes being connected across a DC power supply. Electrical discharges occur across the gap between the electrodes, and the concentration of solid particles is determined as an inverse function of the average delay time interval required for triggering the electrical discharges, which is in turn measured by counting the number of electrical discharges occurring within a predetermined time interval.

  • Patent number: 4359706
Abstract: Pole piece structures for permanent magnets and electromagnets, more particularly for superconducting electromagnets, and pole piece extensions and shields adapted, separately and in combination, to achieve a high concentration of the magnetic flux along the principal magnetic axis of the pole pieces, and preventing magnetic flux leakage and dispersion. The pole pieces are preferably conical or frusto-conical, or in the form of hollow cylinders or conical cylinders or, alternatively, provided with a tapered step ending in a pointed cylinder, a flat cylinder, or a hollow cylinder. The pole piece configurations provide a high concentration of magnetic flux intensity in the magnetic gap between the pole pieces either along the centerline of the pole pieces or in a cylindrical space disposed axially along the centerline of the pole pieces.

  • Patent number: 4359302
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting wallboards, such as gypsum wallboards or rock wallboards to an appropriate size and shape, and for locating utility boxes hidden behind a panelled wall and cutting of a section of the wall at the opening of the utility boxes. The apparatus of the invention comprises a portable hand tool having an adjustable rest for adjusting the depth of cut and a built-in ruler-guide arrangement permitting to cut parallel to a side of a wallboard or permitting to cut circles in a wallboard. The hand tool may be used in combination with a separate locator and cut-out template member positioned in utility boxes mounted behind an installed wall, which provides an indication of the location of each utility box by way of a wallboard puncturing prong, for cutting out an opening in the wallboard, following appropriate guide grooves in the face of the locator and cut-out template.
