  • Patent number: 4347051
Abstract: A unitary punch and die assembly for tooling a powder material compacting apparatus, or press, the assembly comprising a die plate mounted in the press table, which removably holds a die bushing clamped in position by a retainer collet provided with a peripheral thread and an internal thread. The retainer collet has an internal shoulder engaging a shoulder at the base of the die bushing, and a clamping ring threads on the internal thread of the collet for holding the die bushing in position within the collet. The peripheral thread of the collet engages the corresponding internal thread of a die spacer on which the die plate is mounted. By means of the retainer collet and the clamping ring, the die bushing surface may be adjusted flush with the surface of the die plate, without requiring grinding or lapping of the die bushing after assembly of the die bushing in the die plate.

  • Patent number: 4347014
Abstract: A knuckle or swivel joint of the half-ball and socket type comprising a stud terminating in an enlarged diameter half-ball member disposed in the socket member and having a hemispherical recess engaged by the hemispherical convex surface of a retainer bearing member disposed in or, alternatively, made integral with the socket member. The retainer bearing member or, alternatively, a segment of the socket internal surface engaged with the half-ball peripheral surface is elastically pre-loaded in an appropriate direction which causes firm engagement of the diverse bearing surfaces in mutual contact, thus, among others, compensating for wear. The knuckle or swivel joint assembly of the invention is capable of transmitting substantial loads within a wide range of angular variations between the stud and the shank, or other member, rigidly connected to the socket.

  • Patent number: 4345131
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compensating for the wear of an electrode tool during machining by EDM of an electrode workpiece by the electrode tool. During penetration of the electrode tool into the electrode workpiece, relative displacement of the electrodes is stopped as soon as it reaches a predetermined reference position corresponding for example to a machining depth limit data entered in a control buffer memory. The reference position data is corrected as a function of the actual wear of the electrode tool which is measured by comparing the positions taken by the electrode tool when one of its active surfaces reaches the same reference position before and after a machining pass. The correction of the reference position data may be obtained either by successive approximations, or by a single calculation step effected after the first machining pass.

  • Patent number: 4342462
Abstract: An adjustable seal member for effecting a leak-proof junction between a conduit and an opening in the sidewall of a manhole well in an underground sewer installation. The seal member, made of elastomeric material, is in the form of a flanged sleeve which is disposed about the periphery of the conduit and which is clamped over the conduit by means of a steel strap clamp. The flange is embedded in the concrete or cement of the manhole well structure in the edge of the opening in the manhole. The sleeve is adjustable to diverse conduit sizes within a range by having a plurality of increasing internal diameter portions for fitting conduits of different outer diameters within the range to insure relatively close fit between the internal surface of the sleeve and the external surface of the conduit.

  • Patent number: 4329558
Abstract: An arrangement for detecting abnormal concentration of electrical discharges between a travelling wire electrode and a workpiece in a travelling wire EDM apparatus. The abnormal electrical discharge detector of the invention comprises a circuit measuring the voltage across a pair of contacts supplying machining current to the electrode wire. The length of the electrode wire between the two contacts forms a pair of variable resistors connected in a branch of a Wheatstone bridge circuit. The voltage measuring circuit, connected across a diagonal of the bridge, in turn controls some of the machining parameters such as to prevent damages, as for example rupture of the wire electrode, when an abnormal concentration of electrical discharges is detected at a given point of the machining zone between the wire electrode and the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4319115
Abstract: An electrode tool holder for an EDM apparatus which can support either an electrode tool of large size or an electrode tool of small size. The EDM apparatus is provided with a ram consisting of two separate, preferably concentric, linearly movable slide members. One of the slide members, linearly displaceable by a servo motor, carries a holder for an electrode tool of small dimension. The second slide member, although normally linearly displaceable relative to the first slide member, is arranged to be coupled to the first slide member for supporting an electrode tool of large dimension, both coupled slide members being thus driven by the same servo motor.

  • Patent number: 4318318
Abstract: A cutting tool, preferably in the form of a cutting insert of hard material, having a narrow land area or ledge along the cutting edge, forming a shallow recessed groove promoting the formation of a false cutting tip build-up during use of the cutting tool, the cutting tip build-up resulting from the transfer of material from the chip to the ledge surface. The cutting tool of the invention enhances and favors the formation of a cutting tip build-up by providing the shallow recessed groove with a width which is a function of the cut taken by the cutting tool in a workpiece such that the chip removed from the workpiece during a cutting operation bridges the recessed groove.
