  • Patent number: 8244518
Abstract: The emulation of a data processing I/O protocol employs a process which obviates the need to consider hardware specific functionality for which emulation is not an optimal solution. The particular protocol described in exemplary fashion herein is the OSA protocol as defined by Open System Adapter standards. The use of this emulation is also seen to leave in place all of the software tools otherwise employed.

  • Patent number: 8239877
Abstract: In a data processing system, objects (in the object oriented sense of the word) are instantiated through the use of transmitted data which is marshaled and demarshaled through the use of protocols that acquire meta data for the transmitted data through the use of an already existing cache of such meta data which has proper content meeting version requirements as specified by an implementation key associated with the object. This eliminates the need for call back requests that may or may not succeed because of the presence of a firewall in a yet-to-be-established connection. A tool is provided for structuring the data, first on disk and then later in a more readily available portion of an active memory.

  • Patent number: 8236604
Abstract: A metal grid contact and dielectric pattern on a layer requiring conductive contact in a photovoltaic device. The invention includes, in one aspect, forming a metal film; forming an etch resist over the metal film by, e.g., directly writing and in-situ curing the etch resist using, e.g., ink-jetting or screen-printing; etching the metal film leaving the resist pattern and a metal grid contact pattern under the etch resist intact; forming a dielectric layer over the etch resist; and removing the resist pattern and the dielectric over the etch resist, leaving a substantially co-planar metal grid contact and dielectric pattern. The metal grid contact pattern may form the front and/or back contact electrode of a solar cell; and the dielectric layer may be an optical reflection or antireflection layer. The layer requiring contact may be multifunctional providing its own passivation, such that passivation is substantially not required in the dielectric layer.

  • Patent number: 8234642
Abstract: Processing within a computing environment is facilitated by filtering requests of the computing environment. A processing unit that receives a request determines whether it is to perform the request. This determination is made by, for instance, comparing an identifier of the request with an identifier of the processing unit making the determination. If there is a mismatch, then the request is blocked. Other processing within the computing environment is also facilitated by selectively using buffer entries. The selection criteria is based, for instance, on identifier information.

  • Patent number: 8227264
Abstract: An electronic device assembly is provided which includes a substrate, an interposer and an integrated circuit chip. The substrate is fabricated of a first material having a first thermal expansivity, and the interposer and integrated circuit chip are fabricated of a second material having a second thermal expansivity. The second thermal expansivity is different from the first thermal expansivity so that there is a coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the substrate and the interposer or chip. The interposer is coupled to the substrate via a first plurality of electrical contacts and an underfill adhesive at least partially surrounding the electrical contacts to bond the interposer to the substrate and thereby reduce strain on the first plurality of electrical contacts. The integrated circuit chip is coupled to the interposer via a second plurality of electrical contacts only, without use of an adhesive surrounding the second plurality of electrical contacts.

  • Patent number: 8230077
Abstract: A hypervisor-based facility is provided for communicating between a hardware management console (HMC) and a logical partition of a data processing system. The facility includes: packaging a request or response of a source endpoint as cargo in a generic transport primitive, the source endpoint being either an HMC or a logical partition of the data processing system; and forwarding the generic transport primitive from the source endpoint to a target endpoint via the hypervisor. The forwarding includes receiving the transport primitive at the hypervisor and forwarding the cargo of the transport primitive to the target endpoint. The cargo includes the request or response from the source endpoint, and the hypervisor forwards the cargo absent inspection or parsing of that cargo. The target endpoint is the other one of the logical partition or the hardware management console of the data processing system.

  • Patent number: 8226009
Abstract: A scanning apparatus for decoding an encoded symbol character of a symbology includes a laser source operable to emit a beam along an axis and illuminate a target. The target includes an encoded symbol character. A focusing apparatus in optical communication with the laser source focuses the beam on the target at an object distance, and a detector receives light of varying intensities scattered from the encoded symbol character and converts the light into a first signal. A digitizer converts the first signal to a digital bit stream. The scanning apparatus further includes pre-stored information correlating a non-standard symbol pattern to a valid symbol character according to a standard definition of the symbology. The non-standard symbol pattern comprises a first number of elements that deviates from a second number of elements associated with the valid symbol character. A decoder receives the digital bit stream and utilizes the pre-stored information for decoding the signal.
