  • Patent number: 8221994
Abstract: An adhesive composition for use in devices and methods for measuring a presence or a concentration of a particular component, such as an antigen, in a sample, such as blood, are provided. In one exemplary embodiment of an adhesive composition, the composition includes an adhesive, water, a poloxamer, and an anticoagulant. The adhesive can include particular properties, such as being hydrophilic, pressure-sensitive, heat-activated, and/or water soluble. The adhesive is particularly useful because it can help improve the flow of sample a device. For example, when the device is an immunosensor, the adhesive can help prevent the blood from clotting in chambers of the immunosensor. This results in a more efficient and accurate determination of the concentration of the sample. Methods of making the composition and device in which the composition can be used are provided, as are methods of using the same.

  • Patent number: 8205800
Abstract: A data transfer system includes a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader having a radio frequency transmitter and receiver and a laser. The data transfer system also includes a RFID tag on a container which has a first photosensitive device coupled to an electronic circuit in the tag which is in a first state when light from the laser is not striking the photosensitive device and in a second state when light from the laser is striking the photosensitive device such that the RFID tag transmits a signal only when a light beam from the laser is striking the photosensitive device. The tag may be passive, semi-passive (battery assisted passive-BAP), or active. If the tag is BAP then the laser light causes the tag to wake up so that it can respond to the RF signal from a RFID reader. The radio frequency transmitter provides power to the RFID tag sufficient to transmit a signal to the receiver which can be decoded by the RFID reader when the RFID reader is 40 feet or more away from the RFID tag.

  • Patent number: 8202085
Abstract: The present invention presents a power generating spark emitting apparatus in which a mischmetal flint rod also operates as a electron generating source. Either the handle material itself or an internal cathode operates in conjunction with the mischmetal flint rod to form a power source. The cathode and anode are connected across a light emitting diode or incandescent lamp to provide an illumination device. A strike plate mounted within a guided angled recess is disposed on a housing to present the mischmetal flint rod with a strike source such dragging the mischmetal flint rod across the strike plate release sparks from the mischmetal flint rod sufficient to ignite a tinder bundle.
