  • Patent number: 8257580
Abstract: Methods for preparing solvent-dry, stackable tailings. The methods may include a primary leaching or extraction process that separates most of the bitumen from a material comprising bitumen and produces first solvent-wet tailings. The first solvent-wet tailings are washed with a second solvent that removes the first solvent from the tailings. Second solvent remaining in the tailings is removed to thereby produce solvent-dry, stackable tailings.

  • Patent number: 8253395
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are provided for optimizing a bus voltage supplied to a switching power converter to keep the duty cycle of the switching power converter to within a desirable operating range. In some embodiments, the duty cycle of the switching signal used to drive the switching power converter is monitored (e.g., indirectly) to determine whether the duty cycle is approaching an undesirable level. For example, as the duty cycle decreases (e.g., approaches or crosses a certain threshold), embodiments decrease the bus voltage. This may, in turn, allow the switching power converter to output substantially the same output to the load, while using a more efficient (e.g., larger) duty cycle. Certain embodiments use similar techniques, along with certain bus voltage optimization techniques, to control a bus voltage as a function of feedback from multiple switching power converters.

  • Patent number: 8251928
Abstract: A method for carrying out a functional analysis on a person equipped with an artificial extremity having adjustable settings. The method includes the steps of providing a sensor assembly configured as a replacement for a part of the artificial extremity and installing the sensor assembly in place of the part. Forces, accelerations and/or torques are then measured with the sensor assembly during use of the artificial extremity by the person and the settings of the artificial extremity are optimized based on these measurements. The sensor assembly is removed and the replaced part is installed back into the artificial extremity, while retaining the optimized settings. In one embodiment, the artificial extremity is a leg prosthesis having an artificial knee joint with a rotational adaptor mounted above it. The sensor assembly then replaces the rotational adaptor.

  • Patent number: 8250676
Abstract: Garments are provided that include feltable fibers in selected areas to provide high durability. Garments are manufactured with feltable fibers is selected areas, such as high wear or high impact areas, and are then subjected to the felting (or fulling) process to produce a garment having partially felted fibers on the selected areas. Such a garment may be a sock with felted areas selected in the heel and toe areas. Such socks have enhanced resistance to wear in these high wear areas, and therefore are useable for longer periods of time for the user of the sock.

  • Patent number: 8251992
Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for ablational treatment of regions of the digestive tract in post-bariatric surgery patients who fail to achieve or maintain the desired weight loss. Bariatric procedures include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion, and sleeve gastrectomy. These procedures reconstruct gastrointestinal tract features, creating pouches, stoma, and tubes that restrict and/or divert the digestive flow. Post-surgical dilation of altered structures is common and diminishes their bariatric effectiveness. Ablation of compromised structures can reduce their size and compliance, restoring bariatric effectiveness. Ablation, as provided the invention, starts at the mucosa and penetrates deeper into the gastrointestinal wall in a controlled manner. Control may also be provided by a fractional ablation that ablates some tissue within a target region and leaves a portion substantially unaffected.

  • Patent number: 8253400
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for providing output (e.g., current) sensing and feedback in high-voltage switching power converter topologies. Certain aspects of high voltage switching converter topologies may make output (e.g., current) sensing difficult. In some embodiments, a sampling module implements sample-and-hold techniques in a low-side switch converter topology to provide reliable current sensing. Embodiments of the sampling module provide certain functionality, including integration, blanking, buffering, and adjustable sampling frequency. Further, some embodiments include feedback functionality for generating a converter driver signal (for driving the switching converter) and/or a sample driver signal (for driving the sampling module) as a function of sensed output feedback from the sampling module.
