Abstract: Daunomycin derivatives of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a lower alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R is a hydrogen atom or a trifluoroacetyl group are useful in treating certain mammalian tumors.

Abstract: Devices relying on the Inverse Wiedman Effect. Devices include a current conductive, magnetically anisotropic rod, through which an AC current flows. Wound about the rod is a conductive coil having output terminals. By varying the AC current, the anisotropy, or both, variations in the output across coil terminals can be obtained. Devices may be for current sensing, pressure sensing, fluid flow sensing or an electric push button.

Abstract: N-acyl derivatives of the known antitumor antibiotic carminomycin, particularly N-trifluoroacetyl carminomycin, have a much lower toxicity than carminomycin.

Abstract: Heat energy is stored chemically in and extracted from an energy accumulator containing a substance which contains less liquid in the charged, high-energy condition of the accumulator than it does in the discharged low-energy condition of the accumulator, which is associated with vapor condensing and generating means which is maintained at a low temperature as compared with the accumulator in which a liquid container is comprised. Vapor is driven off from the accumulator substance and transferred to the vapor condensing and generating means when energy is stored in the accumulator, and is returned to the accumulator when heat energy is extracted therefrom. The system comprising the accumulator and said vapor condensing and generating means is maintained substantially free from other gases than said vapor.

Abstract: An improved fishing knife comprises a handle having a substantially planar side surface and a blade, the shank of the blade being coplanar with the planar side of the handle.

Abstract: A lampholder, particularly for electric Christmas tree candles, comprises two substantially but not quite similar parts which are united with each other substantially on an axial plane, at least along a major portion of their axial extension. To permit automation of the mounting of contact blades and electric conductors connected thereto in the holder, as well as subsequent assemblage of the lampholder halves, one half only is provided with retention and stress relieving means for firmly holding the contact blades and the stripped ends of the conductors in said one half before as well as after the assemblage of the halves. In one embodiment intended for larger lamp bulbs one lampholder half is longer than the other axially, and terminates in an annular end portion having a through hole for the electric conductors.

Abstract: Improved assembly for removably securing an inflatable tire about a vehicle wheel includes a latching ring disposed in a circumferential receiving groove in the bead seat of the wheel adjacent the inner face of the tire bead. The latching ring includes a portion protruding above the bead seat for retaining the tire in place and a portion shearable by a force applied to the outwardly facing surface of the tire bead in excess of the force encountered during rotation of the vehicle wheel, whereby the tire may be removed without damage upon shearing of the shearable portion.

Abstract: An improved quartz crystal resonator of the type comprising an AT type cut quartz plate is provided in which the plate comprises metallized main electrodes on opposed surfaces thereof which are surrounded by spaced apart metallized supplementary control electrodes. The opposed surfaces of the plate provide a non-metallized unused portion for the plate over a substantial portion of the opposed surfaces. Each of the supplementary control electrodes has at least an associated parameter of width, thickness, density, air gap distance from the respective main electrode and an applied electrode potential and each of the main electrodes has at least an associated corresponding parameter. At least one of the associated parameters of the supplementary electrodes is different from the corresponding associated parameter for the respective main electrodes for controlling the associated Q- factor and frequency of the spurious resonance frequencies.

Abstract: Disclosed is a new class of antitumor glycoside antibiotics of the formula (IA): ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or hydroxy; and X is ##STR2## These compounds are prepared, using novel intermediates, by condensing the appropriate aglycone and amino-deoxy sugar to form the .alpha.-glycosidic linkage.

Abstract: A hollow-molded rack is provided for displaying and dispensing containers. The rack can be wall mounted alone or in close alignment with other like racks. The rack is especially suitable for mounting a collection of empty or full beverage food and parts holding cans.

Abstract: A new class fluorosulphonyl oxafluoroalkanes and of their derivatives is disclosed as well as a process for preparing said products. Furthermore, a new class of fluorosulphonyl olefins, copolymers thereof and a process for preparing same is also disclosed.

Abstract: 2-Hydroxyiminoacetamide compounds of the following formula and salts thereof: ##STR1## [wherein X is S, O or an imino group which may optionally be substituted; B is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl, amino, mercapto or hydrocarbon residue group which may optionally be substituted; and COOR is a carboxyl group which may optionally be esterified] and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are novel and useful as antibacterial agents.

Abstract: A press for compressing powdery material in which a single roller is rotatably mounted eccentrically within a perforated annular mould. This permits a single roller of relatively large diameter to be employed to apply pressure to the powdery material.

Abstract: Perfluoropolyether oils containing traces of H.sub.2 O molecularly dissolved therein are rendered anhydrous and hyperpure by treatment with chlorine trifluoride or monofluoride at a pressure of 1-5 atm. and a temperature of 0.degree.-50.degree. C. after which the treated oil is selectively fractionated.

Abstract: Improved method for in situ visual examination of cardiovascular system comprises feeding a catheter having at least one afferent fiber-optic bundle for transmitting light from the proximal end of the catheter to the distal end thereof and at least one efferent fiber-optic bundle for returning light from the distal end to the proximal end, into the cardiovascular system until the distal end is in the vicinity of the region of cardiovascular system to be examined; illuminating the region by illuminating the proximal end of the catheter; injecting a clear physiologically innocuous fluid in front of the distal end of the catheter to increase clarity of blood in the region being examined; and observing the image returned to the proximal end of the efferent fiber-optic bundle. Fiber-optic catheter system and improved catheter for carrying out method are also disclosed.

Abstract: A telephone headset including a dialing mechanism for allowing a user to place and receive calls, without being disturbed by loud noises nearby, when the headset is connected to a telephone line. The headset also includes a signaling device for alerting the user to incoming calls when a switch on the headset is in one of two given states. A dial tone is obtained prior to making outgoing calls by placing the switch in its second state.

Abstract: An improved fluid quantity indicator, such as for aviation fuel, of the type utilizing capacitive type sensing probes in which a capacitance change occurs proportional to the amount of fluid in a tank or container due to the dielectric constant of the fluid being different from that of air, in which the improvement comprises microprocessor control means for providing display and totalizing control in conjunction with automatic compensation for the zero fluid capacitance variation in a tank and automatic adjustment of the fluid full scale reading for variation in fluid tank capacitance.

Abstract: A fire retardant system comprising a compound having within its structure the 1,2,3,4,9,9-hexahalo-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dione or 1,2,3,4,9,9-hexahalo-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanophthalene-5,8-dioxy nucleus or a compound which is capable of being converted to the 1,2,3,4,9,9-hexahalo-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dione nucleus and requires no metal oxide addition to exert its function.

Abstract: Perfluoropolyether compounds and mixtures thereof having the formula:A--O--(C.sub.3 F.sub.6 O).sub.P --(CF.sub.2 O).sub.Q --(C.sub.2 F.sub.4 O).sub.R --CF(Z)--CO--N(R)Arwherein the perfluoroalkyleneoxy groups are randomly distributed and A is a perfluoroalkyl group or a --CF(Z)--CO--N(R)Ar group; P, Q and R are zero but not simultaneously or numbers from 1 to 100, the sum of P, Q and R being 3 to 200; Z is a fluorine atom or a CF.sub.3 group; Ar is an aryl group; and R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkyl-aryl or an aryl group.These compounds are excellent stabilizers for perfluoropolyether fluids of the formula:X--O--(C.sub.3 F.sub.6 O).sub.P --(CF.sub.2 O).sub.q --(C.sub.2 F.sub.4 O).sub.r --Ywherein p, q and r are each zero or numbers from 1 to 100, the sum of p, q and r being 6 to 200, and X and Y are the same or different and are perfluoroalkyl groups having 1 to 3 carbon atoms.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for adding finely dispersed water and water vapor to the air intake stream of a fuel-air combustion system. A solution of bubble-enhancing surfactant in water partly fills a container. A jet of air bubbles is blown into the solution below its free surface so that a quantity of aqueous bubbles forms on the free surface. A part of the air intake stream is then drawn from this quantity of aqueous bubbles.
