  • Patent number: 6032042
Abstract: A cellular radio network including mobile radio stations is provided in which at least some of the mobile radio stations are capable of moving in a primary network, and in at least one other network having a location area configuration different from that of the primary network. The user can manually prevent all location updatings and location updating attempts between the different networks and, thus, temporarily "lock" the use of the mobile station within a particular network. Not even an location updating attempt into a "foreign network" is made. It is up to the user of the mobile station to decide when the user activates the registration function. The locking function remains activated until deactivation by the user. Subsequent to the deactivation, location updatings between the networks are performed in a normal manner.

  • Patent number: 6031804
Abstract: An apparatus and method for detecting and replacing a defective sector on an optical disk. Recording data and error correction data are recorded on an optical disk at a manufacturing time or an initial time. The recorded data and the error correction data are reproduced in units of one sector. A defective sector is determined when address data in an address field cannot be reproduced or when a number of errors in at least one sector exceeds a specified value. Address data of the defective sector is recorded in a defect list on the optical disk. Recording data and error correction data are successively recorded on the optical disk in a plurality of successive block areas. Defective sectors are skipped and recording data and error correction data are recorded in a unit of one block beginning in a next sector area.

  • Patent number: 6029150
Abstract: A method of payment in an electronic payment system wherein a plurality of customers have accounts with an agent. A customer obtains an authenticated quote from a specific merchant, the quote including a specification of goods and a payment amount for those goods. The customer sends to the agent a single communication including a request for payment of the payment amount to the specific merchant and a unique identification of the customer. The agent issues to the customer an authenticated payment advice based only on the single communication and secret shared between the customer and the agent and status information which the agent knows about the merchant and/or the customer. The customer forwards a portion of the payment advice to the specific merchant. The specific merchant provides the goods to the customer in response to receiving the portion of the payment advice.

  • Patent number: 6023618
Abstract: The charging criteria for determining the price for a call between two subscribers in a cellular mobile telephone network, is improved. One cell, or a group consisting of several cells, is chosen as a group of special cells. Upon establishing a call, a mobile switching center of a calling subscriber analyzes whether the location cell of the calling subscriber and/or that of the called subscriber are members of a group of special cells. If this is the case, the charging criteria determined for the group will be applied. Additionally, private branch exchanges may also be connected to the mobile switching center.

  • Patent number: 6017699
Abstract: The subject invention relates to a set of DNA primers which, when utilized in conjunction with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, can amplify and speciate DNA from five medically important Candida species. Furthermore, the PCR amplified products, generated by the primers, can also be used to create species specific probes which can also detect and confirm the five species of Candida. Thus, the present invention allows for early diagnosis and treatment of an infection. The assay is useful in the context of monitoring antifungal treatment regimens, screening potential antifungal agents, and similar applications requiring quantitative determinations.

  • Patent number: 6016337
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and arrangement for televoting in an intelligent network. In the method, (a) a point (SCP) comprising a service control function SCF sends a televoting activation request to a point (SSP) comprising a service switching function SSF; (b) the point comprising the service switching function SSF counts the calls made by the users of the telephone network to predetermined telephone numbers; and(c) information on the number of calls is forwarded to the service control function SCF of the intelligent network. In order that faultless televoting in a multi-SCP environment could be guaranteed, the point comprising the service switching function SSF makes comparisons, upon receiving a televoting activation request, to find out whether a televoting process activated by some other service control point and using the same or some of the same telephone numbers is in progress, and if so, the point comprising the service switching function SSF does not start a televoting process.

  • Patent number: 6012760
Abstract: A weather strip is adhered to a vehicle by a double sided adhesive tape. The weather strip seals between the vehicle body and a door when the door is closed. The weather strip includes a first section extruded from a rubber material, which is vulcanized at a vulcanizing temperature. The weather strip also includes a second section molded from a thermoplastic elastomer at a temperature lower than the vulcanizing temperature. The adhesive tape is applied to the weather strip to span the first section and the second section. This permits a single piece of tape to be continuously applied to the weather strip, which is more efficient.

  • Patent number: 6006094
Abstract: A new prefix, an international mobile call prefix, is provided in a telecommunications network, such as PSTN, for routing the PSTN originating international call to a foreign mobile subscriber. When a local PSTN exchange receives the international mobile call prefix in the dialed telephone number, it will route the call to a predetermined destination in the same country. The predetermined destination is a network element having a capability of making international routing information interrogation to a home PLMN of a called foreign mobile subscriber. Upon receiving the routing information from the home PLMN the call will be routed to the current location of the called foreign mobile subscriber according to the routing information. As a result, unnecessary international legs in the call can be avoided when the called mobile subscriber is roaming abroad.

  • Patent number: 6002919
Abstract: The invention relates to a wireless local loop system comprising base stations and an access network node which connects the cordless terminal equipments (T) to the exchange of the fixed network. The air interface between the cordless terminal equipment and the base station is mainly in accordance with the GSM mobile system. In addition to the base station, the terminal equipment (T) also measures the field strength and quality of the radio channel. There are at least two measurement periods during a multiframe of a traffic channel (TCH), and the terminal equipment transmits the measurement results of the first measurement period on a single burst in a time slot of a slow associated control channel (SACCH) and the measurement results of the second measurement period in a single burst in a time slot of an IDLE FRAME.

  • Patent number: 5999817
Abstract: A method for performing encoding in a cellular network includes, in each cell, at least one base station communicating with terminal equipment within its coverage area, and a mobile switching center controlling the operation of the base stations. In order to improve the transmission quality over a connection between two terminal equipment, when the mobile switching center detects, during call set-up or handover, that the call is between two terminal equipment located within the area of the mobile switching center, the mobile switching center guides the transcoders of base stations communicating with the terminal equipment to a mode in which the transcoders adapt the rate to fit the transmission network, but do not encode the speech signal.

  • Patent number: 5995422
Abstract: The present invention provides a redundancy circuit in a semiconductor memory device which has spare memory cells which can store information that can be substituted for data of defective memory cells after the completion of the manufacturing process. If addresses designating the defective memory cells are externally input, the redundancy circuit generates a defective cell relief address signal which corresponds to the address designating the defective memory cell and is used to prevent defective data stored in normal memory cells from being output and causes correction data, to be substituted for the defective data output in correspondence with the defective cell relief address.

  • Patent number: 5991716
Abstract: A transcoder which prevents tandem coding of speech in a mobile-to-mobile call within a mobile communication system uses a speech coding method for reducing transmission rate on the radio path. The transcoder includes a speech coder, which encodes the speech signal into speech parameters for transmission to a mobile station, and decodes the speech parameters received from the mobile station into a speech signal according to the speech coding method, as well as a PCM coder for transmitting an uplink speech signal to and for receiving a downlink speech signal from a PCM interface in the form of PCM speech samples. In addition to the normal operation, the transcoder transmits and receives speech parameters through a PCM interface in a subchannel formed by least significant bits of the PCM speech samples. Thus, it is possible to prevent tandem coding while maintaining the standard PCM interface, and the signaling and services associated thereto.
