Abstract: Methods of forming an elongated composite structural member are provided. One method includes, providing a substantially elongated mandrel having an exterior surface exhibiting a desired geometry. Laying up a first ply of preimpregnated fiber reinforced material over the mandrel. Applying a force to the first ply to establish a desired amount of tension within the first ply and then pressing the first ply onto the mandrel in a conformal manner. This includes passing at least one roller over the mandrel and the first ply while maintaining the desired amount of tension within the first ply. The at least one roller is at least partially complementary in shape with the mandrel.

Abstract: Apparatus and method provide flexibility in generating a stimulation waveform to an electrode of an implantable medical device. The stimulation waveform comprises at least one stimulation pulse. The embodiment of the invention supports a generation of a stimulation pulse in which an amplitude and an electrical polarity of the stimulation pulse can be dynamically changed. The embodiment comprises a capacitor arrangement, a regulator and a switching array. The capacitor arrangement can be reconfigured with respect to an electrical reference through the switching array in order for the regulator to deliver the stimulation pulse to a pair of electrodes. In another embodiment, a plurality of stimulation waveforms are generated in which different stimulation waveforms are associated with different electrodes. With the embodiment, a plurality of regulators are connected and reconfigured to the capacitor arrangement in order that the different stimulation waveforms are generated by different regulators.

Abstract: A rechargeable implantable medical device with an external recharging coil carried on the medical device proximal face. The recharging coil can be attached to the medical device housing physically, or chemically, or a combination of both physically and chemically. The recharging coil electrically couples through housing electrical feedthroughs to electronics configured to perform a therapy and a rechargeable power source both carried inside the medical device housing. Additionally methods for attaching the external recharging coil to an implantable medical device are disclosed. The rechargeable implantable medical device can be a medical devices such as a neuro stimulators, drug delivery pumps, pacemakers, defibrillators, diagnostic recorders, cochlear implants, and the like.

Abstract: Human observers stationed on or near beaches gather subjective observations of one or more observable beach conditions associated with respiratory distress. Subjectively determined observations such as dead fish and audible coughing provide a better indication of the likelihood of respiratory distress than measurements made using scientific instruments. The observations may be sent to a remote central database using handheld communication devices. A beach status evaluation is determined based on stored observations, and may be provided to beachgoers through Internet web pages or by telephone or text-message to enable beachgoers to choose an alternative beach or alternative activity when respiratory distress is likely.

Abstract: System for transcutaneous energy transfer. An implantable medical device, adapted to be implanted in a patient, has componentry for providing a therapeutic output. The implantable medical device has an internal power source and a secondary coil operatively coupled to the internal power source. An external power source, having a primary coil, provides energy to the implantable medical device when the primary coil of the external power source is placed in proximity of the secondary coil of the implantable medical device and thereby generates a current in the internal power source. An alignment indicator reports the alignment as a function of the current generated in the internal power source with a predetermined value associated with an expected alignment between the primary coil and secondary coil.

Abstract: Method of forming a curved composite structure are provided. In one embodiment, the method includes contacting at least one ply of preimpregnated material on a first surface of a curved mandrel. The first surface of the mandrel has a first radius of curvature. The mandrel further has at least one second surface that has a second radius of curvature. A tension gradient is introduced on the ply adjacent to the first radius of curvature and the ply is then pressed over the curved mandrel to form the curved composite structure.
