  • Patent number: 7342504
Abstract: A monitoring system includes one or more monitoring devices, positioned in sewer manholes, storm drains, etc., and a remote monitoring station that communicates wirelessly therewith. The monitoring device may be an integrated unit, including sensors, a two-way telemetry unit, a power supply, a processor, and supporting hardware, all located in an enclosed, waterproof housing. The monitoring device is placed within a manhole cavity to obtain depth (e.g., water level) measurements and report the measurements back to the remote monitoring station, which analyzes the data and responds to alert messages when a dangerous water level is detected. The sample and reporting rates of the device, as well as the water level threshold values, may be remotely programmable via commands transmitted from the remote monitoring station. An additional sensor may monitor the manhole cover for security purposes.

  • Patent number: 7339964
Abstract: A semiconductor diode laser that generates light at wavelengths longer than conventional diode lasers. The laser includes a first gain element that generates a first “pump” laser beam having a first optical frequency and a second gain element that generates a second “pump” laser beam having a second optical frequency. The first and second pump beams are mixed in a third section to create a wave of nonlinear polarization oscillating at the difference frequency of the first two beams. Power from this nonlinear polarization wave is coupled by a near-field phase grating to excite an electromagnetic output beam which propagates perpendicular to the laser axis. The frequency of this output beam may be much smaller than either pump beam.

  • Patent number: 7331681
Abstract: A lighting apparatus comprises a light panel having a panel frame, and a plurality of LEDs or other light elements secured to the panel frame. Lenses and/or filters are adjusted in distance from the light elements, by for example moving the lenses/filters into different slot positions of the frame, to alter characteristics of the emitted light. Focal lenses, diffusion lenses, and color filters may be used individually or in combination. A compound lens includes lens elements having different characteristics arranged in a pattern. Through groupwise control of the intensity of the light elements, the different characteristics are emphasized or de-emphasized. The light panel may have an integrated battery, and may be be mounted on a stand. The panel may be modular, allowing larger panels to be constructed from smaller panels.

  • Patent number: 7324876
Abstract: A power management system and associated method includes provision of local wireless energy control units at remote sites for controlling power delivery to customer loads, and a central station with a wireless transmitter for broadcasting commands to the wireless energy control units. The wireless energy control units each comprise a bank of switches for controlling power delivery to electrical loads at each local site. The controllable switches preferably have a deformable bimetal member controlled by a heated coil for engaging and disengaging electrical contacts. Each wireless energy control unit is capable of being pre-configured so as to specify the order or priority in which electrical loads are disengaged, in response to commands to reduce power consumption received from the central station. The central station issues power reduction commands according to different priority levels or alert stages, causing the local wireless energy units to disengage local loads accordingly.

  • Patent number: 7317590
Abstract: A method for determining a flying height of a head of a hard disk drive. The disk drive includes a pre-amplifier and an automatic gain control (“AGC”) circuit that are connected to the head. The method includes determining a first automatic gain control value based on AGC values at two delta pre-amplifier gain settings. A second automatic gain control value is determined based on AGC values at two different flying heights. A difference between the flying heights can be determined from the first and second automatic gain control values. If one of the flying heights is set to 0 the difference in gain values is equal to the flying height of the head.

  • Patent number: 7307810
Abstract: A hard disk drive with a circuit that provides a current to a voice coil motor to move a head over a disk in a seek routine. The disk has track boundaries with discontinuities in track addresses. The circuit includes a state estimator that predicts a next state of the head. The state estimator sets an estimation error to zero when the head is over one of the track boundaries. The estimator then computes a predicted position that is used in a feed forward servo loop to generate a drive current. The drive current is provided to the voice coil motor to move the head across the disk.

  • Patent number: 7304817
Abstract: A hard disk drive that includes a voice coil motor controlled by a servo circuit. The servo circuit provides a sinusoidal driving signal that has two different harmonic frequencies. The dual harmonic waveform creates a voice coil motor jerk profile (derivative of acceleration) that is continuous. The continuous jerk profile reduces vibration and seek time of the drive.

  • Patent number: 7299710
Abstract: A sampling system that contains filter components for collecting and concentrating vapor and particles in high-volume flows. The sample is then vaporized and delivered to a detector at a low-volume flow. The invention also has a sampling probe that contains an air-jet to help dislodge particles from surfaces and a heating lamp to help vaporize compounds on surfaces or objects. • Patent number: 7301719
Abstract: A calibration method for a fly on demand head of a hard disk drive. The method includes the steps of flying a head over a test track of a disk that is covered with a lubricant. A voltage is applied to a heating element of the head to move the head closer to the disk. The fly height of the head is then determined. The voltage can be incrementally varied until the head makes contact with the disk. This sequence can cause a modulated wear pattern in the lubricant of the disk. The voltage is terminated and the head is allowed to fly over the test track. The head is also moved to adjacent tracks on either side of the test track. A pressure gradient of the flying head moves the lubricant about the disk to mitigate the modulated wear pattern.

  • Patent number: 7292912
Abstract: A robot system that includes a robot and a remote station. The remote station may be a personal computer coupled to the robot through a broadband network. A user at the remote station may receive both video and audio from a camera and microphone of the robot, respectively. The remote station may include a graphical user interface that can be selected to generate an alert input to the robot. The user initially establishes a voice communication between the remote station and the robot. To obtain video access the user may select a graphical icon to generate and transmit the alert input to the robot. The caller recipient at the robot may grant the request for video of themselves by inputting a response into the robot. This procedure allows someone at the robot to control the initiation of a video-conference with the user of the remote station.

  • Patent number: 7289883
Abstract: A method for remotely monitoring a patient. The method includes generating and transmitting input commands to the robot from a remote station. The remote station may include a personal computer that is operated by a doctor. The input commands can move the robot so that a video image and sounds of the patient can be captured by a robot camera and microphone, respectively, and transmitted back to the remote station. The robot may also have a monitor and a speaker to allow for two-way videoconferencing between the patient and a doctor at the remote station. The robot can move from room to room so that a doctor can make “patient rounds” within a medical facility. The system thus allows a doctor visit patients from a remote location, thereby improving the frequency of visits and the quality of medical care.

  • Patent number: 7286315
Abstract: A disk drive that contains a fly on demand head (FOD) and a process for determining contact between the FOD head and a disk. The head includes a heating coil that can receive various levels of power. The process includes using a routine to obtain head position estimate error data. A standard deviation of the estimate error data is then determined. Standard deviation values for estimate error data are generated for different power values and used to determine a contact point between the head and the disk.

  • Patent number: 7271973
Abstract: A disk drive that has a plurality of heads coupled to one or more disks. The heads have air bearing surfaces that compensate for a radial crown and a radial camber of an adjacent disk to maintain a flying height at a relatively constant level across the disk surface. By way of example, the air bearing surfaces may have crown and camber sensitivities that are opposite in sign from the crown and camber sensitivities created by the disk. The opposite sensitivities offset the sensitivities of the disk to maintain an essentially constant flying height as the head moves across the surface of a disk.
