Abstract: A servo writer that writes servo information onto a disk of a hard disk drive. The writing of the servo can be synchronized by a clock track that contains a clock read back signal. The clock read back signal is differentiated by a differentiator circuit. A clamping circuit clamps the clock read back signal to minimize signal ringing, undershoot and overshoot phenomena in the signal.
Abstract: A battery operated LED lighting apparatus including: a battery outputting a battery voltage; a light emitting diode or array of light emitting diodes; and a power supply including a boost regulating circuit. The power supply being in communication with the battery and the light emitting diodes such that a constant voltage or constant current is supplied to the light emitting diodes as the battery discharges and the battery voltage falls below the output voltage. Abstract: A method for optimizing read/write channel parameters of a hard disk drive. The process includes measuring a first bit error rate of a head using an initial set of read/write channel parameters and varying all of the read/write channel parameters with a random jump. The random jump may be created from the generation of a random number. The process then includes measuring a second bit error rate of the head using the varied read channel parameters and accepting the varied read/write channel parameters as the new optimum, if the second bit error rate is lower than the first bit error rate.
Abstract: A hard disk drive that calculates an environmental condition, such as altitude, without a sensor. The disk drive includes a temperature sensor that senses a disk drive temperature and a humidity sensor that senses drive humidity. A controller of the disk drive determines whether a variation in a flying height of a head is due to a change in temperature and/or a change in humidity. If not, the controller calculates a change in altitude based on a difference between an estimated variation in flying height and the actual variation in flying height. The new calculated altitude can be used to vary disk drive operating parameters such as write parameters of the heads.
Abstract: A hard disk drive that determines a flying height from a slope of a line created from a ratio of amplitudes of frequencies in response to impulse functions. A first set of amplitudes of reference frequencies can be determined from a reference impulse. A second set of amplitudes of data frequencies can be determined from a data impulse during operation of the disk drive. Ratios of amplitudes of the data and reference frequencies at different discrete frequencies can be plotted. The slope of the plotted line corresponds to the difference between the flying height when the reference impulse is generated and the flying height when the data impulse is generated. The disk drive may utilize the slope in a feedback routine to control the flying height.
Abstract: A hard disk drive with a disk that has a servo field with an A servo burst and a B servo burst. The A servo burst has a trimmed erase band. The trimmed erase band can be created by offsetting the write head relative to a burst centerline to reduce the width of the erase band. For example, the write head can be moved toward a centerline of the A servo burst. The offset can be a function of write current and cylinder location of the disk. The offsets are selected so that the resultant burst profiles do not contain a flat minimum portion.

Abstract: A disk drive that contains a fly on demand head (FOD) and a process for determining contact between the FOD head and a disk. The head includes a heating coil that can receive various levels of power. The process may include a routine to determine head position estimate error data. Variance values for the estimate error data are generated for different power values and used to determine a contact point between the head and the disk. The process may also collect a plurality of signal amplification gain control (SAGC) signal values and compute an average of the SAGC values. Average SAGC values for different power levels can be generated and used to determine a contact point between the head and the disk.
Abstract: A bi-propellant rocket engine may include a primary propellant flowing in a central passageway, a secondary propellant flowing in a secondary passageway generally coaxial with central passageway and a pintle tip having a central chamber sidewall coaxial with the primary passageway and surrounding a central chamber, the central chamber sidewall having a first plurality of apertures there through so that some of the primary propellant exits the central chamber transverse to the flow of the secondary propellant in the secondary passageway. The pintle tip may have a secondary chamber sidewall, substantially thicker than the primary chamber sidewall, surrounding a secondary chamber downstream of and in fluid communication with the primary chamber, the secondary chamber sidewall having a second plurality of apertures there through so that some of the primary propellant exits the secondary chamber transverse to the flow of the secondary propellant in the secondary passageway.
Abstract: A laminated actuator arm of a hard disk drive. The actuator arm can be laminated with a relatively stiff material and a low density material. The stiff material can provide structural integrity for the arm. The low density material may be a damping material that damps shock and vibration energy transmitted into the arm.
Abstract: A detector system for detecting trace molecules. The detector includes an ion trap that is coupled to an ionizer and a detector. The system also includes a controller that can generate voltage potentials within the ion trap. The controller can generate a voltage waveform to isolate one or more ions within the ion trap. The controller can then generate a voltage to dissociate the isolated ion(s). The controller can vary the dissociating voltage to dissociate and detect different ions. For example, the controller may vary the amplitude of the voltage to dissociate a target ion. Other techniques are described which generally improve the speed of detecting different target ions.
Abstract: A vehicle sound system encompasses a combination of speaker configuration, speaker placement, and sound processing to improve sound quality. A pair of speakers (or rows of speakers) are placed close together and located in the front of the console or dashboard with their geometric center on or near the vehicle's central axis. A sound processor acts to “spread” the sound image produced by the two closely spaced speakers by employing a cross-cancellation technique in which the cancellation signal is derived from the difference between the left and right channels. The resulting difference signal is scaled, delayed (if necessary), and spectrally modified before being added in opposite polarities to the left and right channels. The pair of speakers may be placed on a common baffle or mounting surface or in a common housing enclosure, with sound being carried through one or more ducts and emanating out of a slot.
Abstract: A musical instrument may include a musical instrument body, a vibrating element associated with the musical instrument body for producing musical sounds, a transducer coupled to a portion of the vibrating element to apply forces to the vibrating element, a sensor responsive to forces between the transducer and the vibrating element and a signal conditioner responsive to forces sensed by the sensor for altering the forces applied by the transducer to the vibrating element to alter the vibrations of the vibrating element. Alternately, a structure may be included supporting the vibrating element to permit vibrations, the structure coupled to the vibrating element to modify the vibrations in response to a drive signal and to produce an electrical signal related to the vibrations of the vibrating element and a signal conditioner responsive to forces sensed by the sensor for altering the forces applied by the transducer to the vibrating element to alter the vibrations of the vibrating element.
Abstract: A resource catalog system comprises a catalog organized as a set of metadata structures representing distributed system resources, language for resource invocation, and a query interpreter and optimizer. Query optimization includes dynamic functional composition by modeling resources according constraints and determining constraint-satisfaction to compose an execution plan. Query optimization may also include dynamic selection and scheduling of resources by combining a resource scheduling with adaptive feedback. The resources may comprise distributed software components, application programs, shell scripts, executables, and services. The resource catalog system accepts queries for operations on distributed resources through a declarative language or a procedural language. A query optimizer derives catalog operators from a query or elsewhere and accesses the system resources according to interpretation of the catalog operators.

Abstract: An image sensor with a plurality of photodiodes that each have a first region constructed from a first type of material and a second region constructed from a second type of material. Located adjacent to the first region and between second regions of adjacent photodiodes is a barrier region. The photodiodes are reversed biased to create depletion regions within the first regions. The barrier region limits the lateral growth of the depletions regions and inhibits depletion merger between adjacent photodiodes.
