  • Patent number: 4850188
Abstract: Apparatus for generating a stream of high temperature gaseous material comprises a pressure container having an inlet for air under pressure and a restricted outlet orifice. An electrode is within the container, insulated from it, and connected to a source of direct current; it has a discharge point adjacent and aligned with the outlet orifice. The wall of the orifice is conductive and connected to ground. The space between the electrode and the container may converge towards the outlet. A method in which air is compressed within a container having a restricted orifice, at least the portion of the air within the container which is adjacent the orifice is ionized, the excited electrons and ions discharging rapidly from the container through the orifice water or fuel may be introduced into the discharging material, for generation of steam or for combustion, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4832156
Abstract: A braking device is provided to reduce the speed at which a shiftable spring motor runs down. The braking device includes a pallet which is mounted so that it can oscillate, the pallet having a pair or arms which cooperate with the teeth of an escape wheel 13 which rotates as the spring runs down. The pallet is connected to a pendulum weight. The depth of engagement of the arms of the pallet in the teeth of the escape wheel as well as the amplitude of oscillation of the pallet and/or the pendulum weight connected therewith allow the braking action to be changed and hence the speed at which the motor runs down in one of a plurality of selectable shift positions.

  • Patent number: 4817679
Abstract: A method for repairing carbon fiber rapiers used in weaving machines which have been split longitudinally comprises grinding the rapier at the split to form a longitudinal groove in the body of the rapier along the split, filling the groove with a paste of ground glass fiber in epoxy resin, and grinding off any resin paste which extends beyond the original rapier configuration. A repaired rapier having a groove filled with a mixture of epoxy resin and ground glass.

  • Patent number: 4805990
Abstract: A hand-held prism and support structure, in which a positioning element is engageable with the head of a viewer for orientation and manipulation to position the prism as to enable the viewer to receive refracted light from a scene which is in advance of the viewer. The prism has an upper face and a pair of depending and converging faces, the positioning element being engageable with the nose of the viewer. A filter strip comprising different color filters is provided in advance of the prism and one eye of the viewer, there being a prism without a filter in advance of the other eye.A method of color photography includes viewing a refracted and, optionally, color-filtered image of a scene, and photographing the scene using color sensitive film and, optionally, a color filter.

  • Patent number: 4718757
Abstract: Image-enhancement is achieved by the use of instant color film. Such film has a predetermined development time, and after exposure of one print, it is developed and then development is stopped, usually before the normal development time. Another exposure is made on a second film of the same type, such as another print from the same film pack, and development is stopped after a different time. At least one of the prints is developed for a time less than the normal development time of the film. The resulting prints are of different colors, and are viewed together.

  • Patent number: 4716596
Abstract: An article of dress comprising a first piece and a second piece. The first piece comprises a leg covering of decorative light weight material having an upper edge and a lower edge, and capable of being worn as a single unit covering only one leg. The first piece has a length whereby it is capable of extending from above the knee to below the knee of the wearer. The second piece covers a substantial portion of only one leg of the wearer, leaving the other leg exposed, whereby the first piece can be viewed when worn on the other leg of the wearer.

  • Patent number: 4714334
Abstract: A method is provided for producing a photographic image in color of a continuous tone, e.g., black and white object, such as a black and white photograph or an X-ray. Instant color film of the type having emulsions developed in timed sequence after exposure to a developer, and a separable sheet carrying the developer is used. The object is exposed onto the film, the developer is activated, and the developer sheet is separated, perferably prior to development of all of the emulsions. The resulting color photographic image may be reproduced.

  • Patent number: 4685811
Abstract: A mixing apparatus includes two compartments which are interconnected by conduits of two different types. The conduit or conduits together of the first type present a lower resistance of flow from one compartment to the other than do the conduit or conduits together of the second type. The conduit or conduits together of the second type present a lower resistance to flow from the other compartment to the one compartment than the conduit or conduits of the first type. Fluid is caused to flow between the compartments through the noted conduits. A method includes providing apparatus as above-described and causing fluid to flow between compartments.

  • Patent number: 4683986
Abstract: A spring drive mechanism has a spiral spring positioned in a spring encasement as a power source. Its ends are connected, on the one hand, to a spring encasement gear and, on the other hand, to a spring shaft gear. For the purpose of winding up the spring, the spring encasement gear is in mesh with a first drive pinion and the spring shaft gear is in mesh with a second drive pinion. These drive pinions has a stress-free connection to a wind down/wind up shaft across a unidirectional torque transmitters which each permits rotation in one direction; the directions being opposite. A reverse pinion has one pinion sprocket is mesh with the spring shaft gear. The other pinion sprocket is in mesh with the drive pinion in the wind up position. In this position, the spring drive mechanism is blocked in such a way that the tensioned driving spring cannot release.
