Abstract: A gas turbine is provided wherein the thermal stresses in the turbine rotor are reduced. The rotor includes a central disc with a peripheral rim, and a plurality of blades extending radially outwardly from the rim, and to reduce thermal stresses, a duct arrangement is provided which selectively directs hot gases from the turbine combustor to the rim during the turbine start-up. The hot gases from the combustor serve to heat the rim, and thus decease the start-up period necessary to bring the temperature profile of the rotor into the operating temperature range. After the start-up period, the duct arrangement is then used to direct cool gases from the turbine compressor to the rim of the rotor in order to maintain a lower rotor equilibrium temperature.

Abstract: A traveling wave tube (TWT) has a slow wave structure (SWS) which is severed into two or more sections. A signal path, defined below, connects the end of an SWS section to the beginning of the following SWS section. The signal path comprises an impedance matching coupler (IMC), followed by an isolator, a variable phase shifter, and a second IMC. The aggregate band pass characteristic of the components in the signal path is chosen to reject, or strongly attenuate, all frequencies outside the desired operating frequency range of the TWT and yet pass, with minimal attenuation in the forward direction, all frequencies within the desired operating frequency range. The isolator is chosen to reject, or strongly attenuate, waves, of all frequencies, which propagate in the backward direction. The aggregate phase shift characteristic of the components in the signal path is chosen to apply signal power to the beginning of the following SWS section with the phase angle yielding maximum efficiency.

Abstract: The combination with a collapsing, rotary, thread-cutting die head of a chamfering tool inserted coaxially in the hub of the die head. The tool has a cutting blade which acts upon the end of the part being worked upon, during the threading operation. A series of channels drilled through the body of the tool are connected to a source of compressed air in order to blow away the waste material.
Abstract: Antioxidants such as 2-(3,5-di tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzyloxy) ethyl acrylate and 2-(3,5-di tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzyloxy) ethyl methacrylate, age resistant polymers having age resistors physically combined therewith and age resistant polymeric compositions prepared by emulsion free radical polymerization techniques involving the use of said age resistors as monomers.
Abstract: Processing apparatus includes a plurality of processing tanks with a separate film transport and agitating assembly for each tank. Each transport device receives film units, of the type having a plurality of disc-shaped film elements supported in spaced relation on an elongated shaft, and revolves the film units around a central axis, into and out of its processing tank. Each agitating device provides separate drive to rotate the film units on their shaft axes during movement in the tank. Successive transport devices can have different film unit capacities and move the film units at predetermined synchronous rates to facilitate a continuous throughput rate of film units into and out of the apparatus, but allow different processing periods in different processing tanks.
Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus for measuring indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of an internal combustion piston or rotary engine or of an external combustion engine such as a stirling engine. An optical shaft encoder measures crankshaft angle of the engine. Changes in volume with respect to changes in crankangle of one or more cylinders (dV/d.theta.) is determined either empirically or algebraically from engine geometry and stored in a memory. As the crank angle changes, dV/d.theta. is read from the memory and multiplied by chamber or cylinder pressure. The product (P dV/d.theta.) is then added to the total previously accumulated in the cycle. Each time .theta. changes by an amount equal to delta .theta., the process is repeated. At the end of each engine cycle, the total is equal to the IMEP value for that cycle.

Abstract: An apparatus for automatically processing photographic film disks immerses the disks in a plurality of baths of treatment solutions, one bath after another, spins the disks about a horizontal axis of rotation during successive immersions to agitate the disks in the baths, and spins the disks between successive immersions to remove excess solution from the disks. A horizontally supported spindle is used to accumulate the disks for high density processing, while a transport mechanism conveys the spindle between the baths and between first and second rotary drives to agitate and remove the excess solution from the disks, respectively, in accordance with an appropriate processing sequence.
Abstract: Fungi, mites and mite eggs are killed by applying thereto sulfonamides of the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 individually are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, carbamylalkyl, or alkoxycarbonylalkyl and R.sup.2 is haloalkyl, with the proviso that one R or R.sup.1 group is carbamylalkyl or alkoxycarbonylalkyl.
Abstract: A processor and processing method for treating flat discrete elements of photographic film, preferably in a disc format, includes the use of a spindle for receiving the elements in stacked, parallel relation normal to the spindle. The spindle mounted discs are rotated in a processing solution to provide relative movement between the discs and the solution, and are rotated while out of the processing solution to remove excess solution from the discs.

Abstract: A heat exchanger of increased effectiveness is disclosed. A porous metal matrix is disposed in a metal chamber or between walls through which a heat-transfer fluid is directed. The porous metal matrix has internal bonds and is bonded to the chamber in order to remove all thermal contact resistance within the composite structure. Utilization of the invention in a rocket chamber is disclosed as a specific use. Also disclosed is a method of constructing the heat exchanger.

Abstract: In combination with a bed, a lifting frame inserted between the box-spring and the head section of the mattress for raising the head section to various angular positions relative to the remaining part of the mattress. Two lifting levers are pivotally connected to the lateral elements of the bed frame. On one side of the pivotal points, lifting levers are connected to the lifting frame. The opposite side is pulled down by way of a cable wound around a electrically powered shaft located under the bed frame and extending across the width of the bed. A barrier secured to the box-spring prevent the foot end of the mattress from slipping off the end of the bed when the head section is raised.
Abstract: A perambulatory self-contained apparatus for facilitating care of invalids characterized by a narrow sit-down type bathtub mounted on casters. A lateral gate provides for easy access into the bathtub from ground level. Associated with the bathtub are a plurality of heated supply tanks, electrically powered pumps, mixing valves and conduits for selectively conveying liquids from the tanks or from the tub drainage outlet towards a shower ring or a hand-held spray unit.
