  • Patent number: 4549031
Abstract: A process for the direct conversion of an aqueous solution of carbohydrates to hydrocarbons where a feed consisting essentially of an aqueous solution of carbohydrates is passed over a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite catalyst having a constraint index of 1 to 12 and a silica/alumina molar ratio of about 12. An important feature of this invention is the short amount of time the aqueous carbohydrate solution is in contact with the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 4523046
Abstract: Gasoline product yield is enhanced in a fixed bed methanol-to-gasoline process by splitting the conversion reactor into a series of smaller conversion reactors such that the total amount of catalyst normally present in the single conversion reactor is present in equal quantities in the smaller conversion reactors. The smaller conversion reactors operate sequentially with the next conversion reactor beginning operation only when the preceeding conversion reactor is catalytically exhausted. The by-passing of one or more of the catalyst beds prevents premature deactivation of the catalyst beds downstream of the point at which the reaction products are removed.

  • Patent number: 4504690
Abstract: A method is provided for treating modified ZSM-5 type zeolite catalysts with a vapor phase organophosphorus reagent such as trimethylphosphite or dimethylmethylphosphonate in order to improve the para-selective properties of such catalysts for the conversion of aromatic materials. • Patent number: 4486125
Abstract: A modular and floatable offshore exploration and production platform system for use in shallow arctic waters is disclosed. A concrete base member is floated to the exploration or production site, and ballated into a predredged cavity. The cavity and base are sized to provide a stable horizontal base 30 feet below the mean water/ice plane. An exploration or production platform having a massive steel base is floated to the site and ballasted into position on the base. Together, the platform, base and ballast provide a massive gravity structure that is capable of resisting large ice and wave forces that impinge on the structure. The steel platform has a sloping hourglass profile to deflect horizontal ice loads vertically, and convert the horizontal load to a vertical tensile stress, which assists in breaking the ice as it advances toward the structure.

  • Patent number: 4481101
Abstract: A process for demetallation and desulfurization of resids by visbreaking an admixture of resids, particulate solids, and steam and/or hydrogen, and then subjecting the visbroken mixture to high temperature settling and separating to provide a first vapor product, a liquid product, and a recycled underflow solids stream. The process further comprises coking the liquid product to produce a second vapor product and coke and then distilling the combined first and second vapor products to yield a plurality of demetallized and desulfurized liquid hydrocarbon products. A fraction of the recycled underflow from the settler/separator is removed as a purge stream and burned for recovery of heat and metals. If hydrogen is used in the visbreaking step, the first vapor product is condensed to separate the hydrogen for recycling.
