Abstract: A cold cranking system for measuring the viscosity of lubricating oils is disclosed. The system includes a viscometer having means for cooling a sample of the oils to a desired temperature for the viscosity measurement. A constant temperature cold bath source is provided for cooling the sample to the desired temperature, where the temperature of the cold bath is controlled to a constant predetermined temperature differential below the desired temperature for the sample. A separate heating bath of hot coolants is also provided to heat the sample after measurement to reduce the sample's viscosity to permit the rapid and complete removal of the sample from the viscometer during introduction of the next sample into the viscometer. A sample supply system is also included for supplying the samples to be measured.
Abstract: A high quality lube base stock oil of low pour point and excellent stability is produced from a waxy crude oil fraction in a single-stage hydrodewaxing process by using an improved ZSM-5 type catalyst having nickel-molybdenum, cobalt-molybdenum or a molybdenum hydrogenation agent incorporated thereon.

Abstract: A method of incorporating metals onto a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite support comprises first depositing a metal which forms bonds with the zeolite and subsequently depositing a catalytically active metal into the zeolite which becomes associated with the first metal. Both metals may be introduced by decomposition of organometallic complexes such as allyl complexes.
Abstract: The present invention provides two-stage and three-stage fluidized bed process embodiments for burning carbonaceous solids for the generation of heat to produce motive fluids for application in combined cycle power plant systems. The finely-divided refractory solids employed in the fluidized beds may contain sorbent material to neutralize noxious gas constituents and yield a clean flue gas for venting.

Abstract: A tubular member for a drill string used in the rotary drilling of deviated boreholes, which includes an outer circumferential surface which is contoured and adapted to engage the wall of the borehole so as to produce a longitudinally downward force on the drill bit upon rotation of the drill string. The tubular member may be a drill collar or section of drill pipe, wherein the contoured surface is constituted of a helical thread of a pitch which will impart a longitudinal force towards the drill bit upon rotation of the tubular member.
Abstract: An improved method of locating and measuring voids behind casings of wells in unconsolidated formations is disclosed featuring first and second logging operations carried out before and after perforation washing respectively to locate voids. The voids may thereafter be filled using conventional gravel packing techniques. In a preferred embodiment pulsed neutron logging is the logging tool chosen, and a washing fluid having a high neutron absorption cross-section is used.
Abstract: Film coating and biaxial orienting apparatus comprising a first uniaxial stretching unit for machine direction orientation of the film, a coating device to provide a liquid coating composition in a center band on the film, a second uniaxial stretching unit for transversely orienting the coated film and having edge holders for gripping the film, and a heater for curing the coating under constrained conditions during setting of the film.
Abstract: An arrangement and a method for the increase in the production of liquid natural gas and the conservation of energy and reduction of flash gas in a liquid natural gas manufacturing installation and, more particularly, the reduction in the quantity of formed flash gas through the novel utilization of a hydraulic expander in the installation for extracting work from the flow of liquid natural gas prior to flashing thereof.

Abstract: A crystallization process is improved by employing direct contact cooling whereby a volatile liquid is vaporized to provide the cooling necessary to effect the crystallization. The effluent vapors of the volatile liquid may be liquified and recycled for reuse by manipulation of temperature and/or pressure. In one embodiment, durene is crystallized from a C.sub.10.sup.+ aromatics fraction using liquified n-butane as the coolant.
Abstract: An ullage gauge for directly and accurately measuring the ullage of a cargo tank of a vessel such as an oil tanker without the necessity of opening the hatch. The gauge is comprised of a calibrated ullage tape which is supplied from a winder reel positioned within a sealed chamber atop the deck of the tanker and communicating with the cargo tank, the winder reel being rotated by a winder reel handle placed exterior of said sealed chamber. The sealed chamber includes a view window which allows direct observation of the calibrated surface of the ullage tape as well as direct observation of the rising cargo within the cargo tank. A float attached to the ullage tape is of sufficient size and weight that once contact of the float with the surface of the cargo is made, such contact is felt by the operator through the winder reel handle.
Abstract: A process is described for improving yields and leaching rates of mineral values in highly reducing uranium-bearing formations, while minimizing deleterious environmental impact, by injecting an oxidant such as gaseous air or O.sub.2 into the formation prior to leaching. The preoxidation may be enhanced by the presence of CO.sub.2 gas in the pre-leaching oxidant. The process is particularly suitable for systems employing a CO.sub.2 /O.sub.2 lixiviant. The presence of sulfate ion further improves the leaching rate of such a system.
Abstract: A process for upgrading heavy oil to fuel products comprises deasphalting the heavy oil with an oxygenated solvent and simultaneously converting the oxygenated solvent and deasphalted oil over a ZSM-5 type catalyst to produce gasoline and distillate boiling range hydrocarbons.
