  • Patent number: 5160622
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a filtering system and method of filtering an aqueous medium, such as water in an aquarium tank. The aquarium water is brought into contact with a filtering medium, preferably a biological filtering medium. The filtering medium purifies the aquarium water by removing impurities from the aquarium water. At a certain time, the water is rapidly removed from the filtering medium, preferably by siphoning action. The process and system provides the biological filtering medium with exposure to air necessary to sustain the life and activity of the bacteria growing on the biological medium. At the same time, the system purifies the aquarium water.

  • Patent number: 5152938
Abstract: A process for preparing a wholly carbonaceous diaphragm includes blending a powder of graphite with a chlorine-containing resin and a monomer or a primary condensate of a thermosetting resin containing a triazine ring; adding thereto a solvent or a plasticizer capable of dissolving these resin components; thoroughly kneading the resulting mixture so that crystals of graphite cleft and binder resin are allowed to disperse with strong affinity, whereby a resulting composition is made into a sheet-form in which the crystal surfaces of graphite are oriented to a high degree; further passing the sheet-form through a calendering roll to preform it into a film or a sheet; then forming these materials into a shape of a diaphragm in heated air to remove the solvent or plasticizer, and to produce a completely cured body causing no thermal deformation by promoting cross linking reaction and curing reaction of the chlorine-containing resin by triazine; and then baking the cured body in an inert atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5061241
Abstract: The Rapid Infusion Device is a mechanical pumping system for the rapid delivery of filtered, bubble free, warmed volume to a patient suffering from acute hypovolemia. The principle of operation is one of overcoming resistance mechanically, The flow of fluids is totally regulated by the resistance encountered at the smallest tubing orifice along the infusion pathway. The RID components, assembled as a system, provide the capability for the rapid infusion of filtered, bubble free, and warm volume. The word volume is used to describe the fluid delivered by the device as any desired fluid may be delivered by the device. The RID is composed of two systems, i.e., durable permanent equipment and a disposable unit for one time use. Durable equipment consists of a roller pump, its controls, a permanently mounted heating element and its controls, and a mounting bracket to attach the heating element to the housing of the roller pump. The disposable unit is made of molded plastic cast in two halves.
