    Abstract: A poly(vinyl chloride) product is provided containing as a permanent plasticizer, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene which is copolymerized in the presence of porous particles of the PVC. The copolymerization is carried out in either suspension or emulsion and under conditions which provide a copolymer containing 60 to 85 wt % vinyl acetate in amounts from about 20 to 60 wt % of the vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in the final composition. A free flowing powder is formed which can be used for PVC compounding operations. If over 60 up to 80 wt % of the composition contains the copolymer, the product is a reinforced VAE dispersion.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an improved process for the catalytic hydrogenation of methylene bridged polyphenylamines using rhodium as th e catalyst to produce the methylene bridged polycyclohexylamine counterparts. The improvement for hydrogenating crude methylene bridged polyphenylamines containing polyphenylamine oligomers and trace amounts of impurities, such as the formamide of the methylene bridged polyphenylamines, comprises contacting the crude polyphenylamine feed with a hydrogenation catalyst, other than rhodium, and one which is not a catalyst poison to rhodium, under conditions sufficient to at least partially hydrogenate the polyphenylamine mixture and then effecting hydrogenation of the methylene bridged polyphenylamine to the polycyclohexylamine counterpart in the presence of a rhodium catalyst.

    Abstract: Polyvinylaminals, optionally as the formed copolymer with polyvinylhemiaminals and polyvinylacetals are useful as separating agents and are provided by reacting a poly(vinylamine) or a copolymer containing vinyl alcohol and vinylamine units with a monoaldehyde. The aldehyde, such as butyraldehyde, can be introduced into the polymer aminalization as a liquid or gas, generally in a proportion of about 0.02 to 0.5 mol per mol of alcohol and amine units in the polymer chain. These polymers, especially as the cationic salt, perform very well in the flocculation, settling, clarification and dewatering of wastewater.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an improved process for the formation of N-(l-alkoxyalkyl)amides with coproduction of alkylidene bisamides. The N-(l-alkoxyalkyl)formamides of this invention are prepared by reacting formamide with an acetal or hemiacetal carboxylate ester represented by the formulas below in the presence of a solid acid ion exchange resin wherein the acid groups have been neutralized with an amine compound having a pKa (as the protonated amine in water) from about 4 to 9. The hemiacetal ester is represented by formula I and the acetal is represented by formula II. ##STR1## In the above formulas, R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, or aryl; and R.sub.3 is secondary or tertiary alkyl having from 3-8 carbon atoms.

    Abstract: Vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) copolymer emulsions having extended shelf life which are particularly suited for use as binders of nonwoven substrates. The copolymer emulsions are prepared by incorporating 1 to 45 wt % tetramethylol glycoluril, based on the amount of vinyl acetate in the copolymer, into an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer consisting essentially of 60 to 94 wt % vinyl acetate, 5 to 30 wt % ethylene and 1 to 10 wt % of a crosslinkable comonomer. Suitable crosslinking monomers include N-acrylamidoglycolic acid and N-methylol acrylamide. Nonwoven products formed by depositing the emulsion onto a nonwoven substrate exhibit significantly improved resistance to organic solvents.

    Abstract: Methanol is produced from synthesis gas comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide in a two-stage liquid phase reactor system. Each reactor is operated in an optimum temperature range to maximize methanol productivity, and once-through product conversion of up to 9.1 moles methanol per 100 moles of synthesis gas can be achieved with reasonable catalyst utilization. Overall catalyst utilization is increased by countercurrent catalyst transfer. In an alternate mode of operation, the liquid phase reactor system is integrated with a coal gasification combined cycle (CGCC) power generation process wherein the unreacted synthesis gas is used as fuel in a gas turbine-driven electric power generator. Operation of each liquid phase reactor in the optimum temperature range maximizes the available heat of reaction which is recovered as steam; the steam is utilized in the gas turbine combustor or the CGCC steam turbine.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a process for separating methoxyisopropylamine and particularly to an improvement in the process for the recovery of methoxyisopropylamine from the reaction of methoxyisopropanol with ammonia under amination conditions. In this process water is produced as a byproduct and in the separation process an azeotrope is formed which comprises about 14% water and 86% methoxyisopropylamine at atmospheric pressure. The process for enhancing separation of the azeotrope comprises contacting the azeotrope of methoxyisopropylamine and water with diisopropylamine in sufficient amount to form the azeotrope of water and diisopropylamine and separating the azeotrope from the other materials in a distillation column. The overheads in this column is charged to a decanter where water is removed as a bottoms phase and the diisopropylamine as the upper phase and returned as reflux to the distillation volumn.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for adsorptive separation of carbon monoxide or olefins from gas mixtures using adsorbents, which comprise cuprous compounds dispersed on amorphous oxide or carbon macroporous supports. The compositions are prepared by impregnating cupric compounds on, preferably pretreated, supports with the aid of an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of a di- or polycarboxylic acid dispersant, such as ammonium citrate, followed by reduction of the cupric compound to the corresponding cuprous compound. The reduction can be performed either by the use of elevated temperature or by the use of a reducing gas preferably carbon monoxide at relatively low temperatures up to 150.degree. C. Methods of synthesis are also disclosed.
