    Abstract: This invention relates to polyurethane coatings formed from prepolymers made by reacting polyisocyanates with long chain polyols having an average functionality of greater than 2. The resulting prepolymers have equivalent weights greater than about 250 grams per equivalent and preferably greater than about 350 grams per equivalent. An excess of polyisocyanate is reacted with the polyol component at an equivalent ratio of greater than 4:1 equivalents isocyanate per equivalent of polyol. Excess polyisocyanate is then removed from the prepolymer.The resulting polyurethane prepolymers are chain extended with compounds having active hydrogen atoms such as water, amines or short chain polyhydroxy compounds, e.g., diols to form the resulting coatings.

    Abstract: A process for making an aqueous vinyl acetate/ethylene/N-methylolacrylamide copolymer emulsion comprising:(a) adding an initial charge containing all the vinyl acetate monomer to be polymerized and an effective amount of an emulsifying system consisting essentially of an anionic surfactant, especially a salt of an alkylphenoxy poly(ethyleneoxy) sulfate containing about 3-5 ethyleneoxy units,(b) pressurizing the reactor with sufficient ethylene to yield a copolymer having the desired Tg,(c) initiating polymerization at a temperature from 45.degree. to 85.degree. C., and(d) continuing polymerization at a temperature from 45.degree. to 85.degree. C., while continuously adding N-methylolacrylamide over a period of time such that the free vinyl acetate monomer content of the reaction medium is about 2-4% upon completion of the N-methylolacrylamide addition.

    Abstract: A process is provided for making a modified carbon molecular sieve which is suitable for separating gases having different adsorption rates on the sieve. The process involves modifying a starting sieve support having a majority of micropores with an effective pore size of about 4.5 to 8 angstroms, with a two-step process in which the sieve is contacted with two different volatile carbon-containing organic compounds, preferably hydrocarbons, which have different molecular dimensions. The compound used in the first step is larger than that in the second step, so that the pore openings of the micropores of the support are narrowed successively in two distinct steps without filling the micropores themselves. The invention also discloses an improved carbon molecular sieve and the separation of gases, such as oxygen from nitrogen, by the use of this improved adsorbent.

    Abstract: This invention is a residue-free cleaning process for removing metal-containing contaminants from a surface of a substrate of the type used in manufacturing semi-conductor devices. The process comprises contacting the substrate with an effective amount of a cleaning agent comprising a .beta.-diketone or .beta.-ketoimine dispersed in an atmosphere capable of oxidizing the metal-contaminants at a temperature sufficient to form volatile metal-ligand complexes on the surface of the substrate. The volatile metal-ligand complexes are sublimed from the surface of the substrate leaving essentially no residue.

    Abstract: The invention pertains to tertiary amines used as catalysts for the preparation of polyurethane foams prepared via the catalytic reaction of a polyisocyanate with a polyol in the presence of blowing agents, etc. The tertiary amine catalysts are prepared by reacting an olefinic nitrile with aliphatic polyol having at least secondary hydroxyl functionality in a ratio less than stoichiometric for providing cyanoalkylated polyol having residual hydroxyl functionality. The resulting cyanoalkylated polyol then is reacted with a secondary amine under conditions for effective reductive alkylation.The tertiary amine catalysts, because of residual secondary hydroxyl functionality, provide for uniform dispersion within a polyurethane, formulation; they provude for additional or extended pot life in polyurethane formulations at temperature below reaction condition, and they are bound by reaction on cure.

    Abstract: Carbon molecular sieves, useful in the separation of air into oxygen and nitrogen, are improved through modification of the micropores of the sieve by contact with the pyrolysis products of a carbon-containing compound in the gaseous state diluted with helium, with or without nitrogen as a part of the diluting gas. Volatile organic compounds, such as trimethylcyclohexane, are used with the diluent gas to narrow the micropore openings of a carbon molecular sieve and increase its kinetic selectivity for oxygen adsorption. Carbon dioxide and helium or argon in the diluent gas are used to open pores available to contacting gases.
