  • Patent number: 4705491
Abstract: A telescoping torque transmitting shaft comprising a shaft having at least three longitudinally extending circumferentially spaced guide grooves and a sleeve axially slidably surrounding the shaft and having an inner counter groove opposite each guide groove. Torque is transmitted between the shaft and the sleeve by a row of balls for each guide groove, each ball being partially received in its guide groove and partially received in the counter groove opposite its guide groove. At least certain of the balls in one row are of resilient elastic material; all others are substantially harder. Bias imposed upon the shaft by the resilient balls, urging the shaft in one lateral direction relative to the sleeve, maintains every ball in torque transmitting contact with both the shaft and the sleeve, while the harder balls in the other rows, by such contact, maintain the elastic balls compressed for exerting such bias.

  • Patent number: 4704069
Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating a large motor-driven refrigeration gas compressor which has independently movable suction and discharge slide valves to prevent undesirable, possibly damaging hydraulic pressure build-up caused by sealing oil remaining in the gas compression chambers during compressor start-up. While the compressor is started and brought up to full speed, the suction slide valve is disposed in fully unloaded position to fully open the gas suction port and the discharge slide valve is disposed in position to fully open the gas discharge port to enable excess oil in the gas compression chambers to exit freely through the compressor gas discharge port before oil pressure build-up can occur. When the compressor is at full speed, the suction slide valve is positioned to maintain a desired gas suction pressure and the discharge slide valve is positioned to equalize gas pressure between the gas compression chambers and the compressor gas discharge port.

  • Patent number: 4697343
Abstract: In a device for cutting shielding of shielded cable, comprising an elongated cable carrier of U-shaped cross-section and an elongated saw carrier hinged to the cable carrier, cable is releasably locked into a lengthwise extending, sidewardly opening groove in the cable carrier by means of a lever pivoted to it and having plural lobes that project radially from the axis about which the lever swings, the lobes having rounded tip portions at different distances from that axis. As the lever is swung in a locking direction one of the lobes, depending upon cable diameter, cammingly engages a cable in the groove defined by the cable carrier and locks it to the cable carrier for cutting.

  • Patent number: 4688690
Abstract: Method and apparatus for extending a fly section of a telescopic crane boom which fly section does not have its own power unit to effect extension or retraction. The boom includes a base section, an inner powered section telescoping within the base section, an outer powered section telescoping within the inner section, and a non-self-powered fly section telescoping within the outer section. To extend the fly section, a load pin connecting the fly section to the outer section is released using a hydraulic cylinder mounted to the base section. The load pin is locked in the released position by a locking device. The outer section is then extended, taking the fly section with it. Upon full extension of the outer section, the inner end of the fly section is latched to the inner section or base section by latch pins actuated by a hydraulic cylinder. The outer section is then retracted, exposing the fly section and unlocking the load pin from its released position.

  • Patent number: 4687434
Abstract: The molding apparatus of this invention produces a one-piece molded unit that provides a two-piece plastic fastener whereof one piece is a grommet having a head with a flat front surface and forwardly projecting legs defining a sidewardly and forwardly opening slot, and the other piece is a pin receivable through the head and forwardly slidable in the slot to an operative position holding the front ends of the legs flexingly diverged. As molded, a front end portion of the pin is connected with the head by a frangible flashing. A forwardly opening radially extending groove in the front of the head, opening from one side of the slot, defines a substantially flat forwardly facing groove surface that is rearwardly offset from and parallel to the front surface of the head and is flush with the front end surface of the pin. The molding apparatus comprises two die members, each having a flat surface to which opens a cavity defining one longitudinally extending half of the unit that includes a half of each leg.

  • Patent number: 4685598
Abstract: In a valve assembly receivable in an outwardly projecting neck in a keg, for normally sealing the keg and for cooperation with a detachable coupler by which the keg is tapped, the cylindrical spring retainer of the assembly has at its axially inner end deflector surfaces so liquid flowing inward along that cylindrical wall during filling of the keg through the gas passage of the valve assembly is deflected radially across the inner end edge of that wall as a sheet-like jet. This prevents upward spray out of the annular space between the siphon tube and the spring retainer, thus preventing overcarbonation, excessive foaming and underfilling of the keg.

  • Patent number: 4682825
Abstract: The security device of this invention comprises a transparent panel normally locked edgewise upright in the plane of front edges of a pair of vertically spaced shelves of a selfservice rack, blocking forward removal of all but the lowermost one or a predetermined few of a stack of like articles on the lower one of those shelves. At its top edge the panel has a link connection with the front edge of the upper of those shelves. Its lower edge portion is received in an upwardly opening groove in a fixed bracket, and the bottom of that groove so supports the panel that the link connection cooperates with resilience of the panel and bracket to provide a snap toggle action between locked and unlocked or releasing conditions. From the releasing condition the panel can be raised edgewise out of the groove and swung up to an inverted position and hooked there, permitting free access to the space between the shelves.
