  • Patent number: 4763765
Abstract: A drive member such as a gear of a pulley cooperates with a pair of clutch elements, each of which has a splined connection with a shaft. One clutch element is axially fixed; the other is shiftable through a small distance towards and from the fixed one. Each clutch element has a conical surface concentric to the shaft that tapers oppositely to the conical surface on the other. The drive member has an inner periphery of larger diameter than the shaft and has oppositely tapering conical surfaces that respectively mate with the conical surfaces on the clutch elements, which thus at all times maintain the drive member coaxial with the shaft and confine it against axial shifting. An actuator urges the shiftable clutch element towards the fixed one to engage the clutch elements with the drive member. A spring biases the clutch elements apart so that the mating conical surfaces can serve as bearings lubricated by oil delivered through the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4762450
Abstract: A molded plastic one-piece hollow expansion nut comprises an outwardly expandable shank which is insertable through a panel hole and a head at one end of the shank for engaging the panel surface. A screw-receiving bore extends axially through the nut and receives the threaded shank of a screw whose screw head bears against the nut head. The portion of the bore along which shank wall expansion occurs is cylindrical and of slightly larger diameter than the screw thread. The inmost end of the bore is of oblong cross-section and its minor axis is shorter than the diameter of the screw thread. A single screw-engaging thread in the cylindrical bore initially holds and guides the screw. The shank walls opposite the ends of the minor axis have oblique screw-thread receiving slots therethrough which define very sturdy damage resistant nut threads which engage the screw thread.

  • Patent number: 4761528
Abstract: An induction furnace for melting refractory materials into a molten state by induction from a high frequency alternating current source. The furnace comprises a material holding crucible formed by a substantially cylindrical side wall having a single cylindrical turn. The side wall terminates in end portions which are spaced apart from each other to define a slot therebetween which extends generally longitudinally of the cylindrical wall. The side wall portions are connected to the source of alternating current so that the side wall turn comprises both the crucible and an inductor. An electrically conductive, elongated cooled member is mounted in the slot in spaced relation between each of the end portions. • Patent number: 4761517
Abstract: Flat electrical connecting cable with controlled electrical and thermal resistances. It comprises a flat insulating support, on which are installed connecting lines constituted by two superimposed layers. The first of them is constituted by a poor heat conducting material, such a manganin, while the second is discontinuous andis formed from a very good electric conducting material, such as copper. The segments on which the second layer is installed are thermally insulated an at uniform temperature. It is possible to vary the conductivity of the different layers by acting on the thickness and width thereof. This invention is applicable in industries such as cryogenics and space, as well as all applications functioning between a cold source and hot source, where it is wished to control the heat exchanges.

  • Patent number: 4760268
Abstract: In a container comprising a drum and a cover, the cover is locked on to the drum by providing, on the cover periphery, a series of vertical tongues inclined towards the outside in such a way that their end can be located beneath a shoulder of the drum. The part of the cover which bears on the upper edge of the drum is elastically deformable so as to facilitate latching in place. An injection shaft formed in the cover makes it possible to inject into the drum a material for covering the radioactive waste contained therein. This configuration permits an automation of the conditioning and storage of the waste.

  • Patent number: 4759670
Abstract: A two-piece molded plastic fastener comprises a hollow body and a pin insertable thereinto. The body has a head and a bore defined by a resiliently deformable grooved bore wall. The pin has a pin head and a serrated pin shank. When fully installed in an aperture in a workpiece (which comprises one or more panels), the serrated pin shank is frictionally engaged with and digs into the resilient grooved bore wall (i.e., is "set"), and the two heads bear against opposite sides of the workpiece. Depending on fastener design, the heads either apply a predetermined pressure on the workpiece (depending on the setting force) or are maintained at a predetermined distance from each other when set. Either the body or pin or both may embody features (such as holes, screw threads, hooks, snap fasteners) which enable objects to be secured thereto. In addition, the pin may have an axial bore therethrough to enable the fastener to serve as a bushing.

  • Patent number: 4754281
Abstract: In a direction finder operating according to the Watson-Watt principle and having two separate receivers (3, 4) of the same type and of simple construction for the signals of the two crossed directional antenna systems (A, B, C, D), the vectorial simulation signals VN in a transmission line for intermediate frequency antenna signals are compared to vectorial rectified signals VV in order to compensate the phase shift caused in both receivers by means of an adjustable phase shifter (21). The vectorial signals VV are selectively derived from the antenna signals as sum signals or difference signals. In one embodiment, a reconstructed phase signal is obtained by reverse pulse control in a direction finding ellipse generator (24, 25) having two outputs on the basis of the difference between the vectorial rectified signal VV and the rectified vectorial simulation signal VN.

  • Patent number: 4752357
Abstract: A method and suitable apparatus for periodically analyzing pulp stock, including wood pulp and water, in a pulp digester, which may or may not be part of a paper machine, to determine the amount of cooking to which the pulp has been subjected. The method includes diluting a sample of the pulp stock from the digester, diluting the sample to a predetermined range of consistency, and determining the exact consistency of the sample. Consistency can be determined by any suitable commercially available apparatus. Next, substantially all the water is removed from the sample. A reagent, preferably a 14 percent solution of nitric acid in water, is then added to the sample and allowed to react with the sample for a predetermined time interval at a predetermined temperature. The light absorbance of the reagent during and after the reaction is determined by the amount of cooking to which the pulp has been subjected and the consistency of the sample.

  • Patent number: 4752680
Abstract: The invention relates to a card-like information carrier readable with RF waves and having resonant devices at spaced intervals across its face that are tuned to different resonant frequencies, an item of information being encoded in the pattern of those frequencies. Each device comprises a dielectric sheet having a deposit of conductive material overlying each of its surfaces. At least one deposit has a spiral slit that defines in it a spiral inductance coil. Each deposit has a capacitance region opposing a like capacitance region of the other and having substantial extension in directions along and away from the slit. Each device can be returned to a predetermined higher resonant frequency by punching through the carrier to reduce areas of opposing capacitance regions of the device, or it can be made non-resonant by punching through all turns of its coil.
