  • Patent number: 4954639
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making ionized fluoroanthranilic acid from a fluorophthalic compound in a single pot process without isolating any intermediate product. A composition is prepared which comprises an aqueous solution of water, a fluorophthalic compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR1## and mixtures thereof, where "n" is 1 to 4, at a concentration of about 5 to about 30 percent by weight based on the water weight, and about 1 to about 1.5 equivalents of hydroxylamine or a mineral acid salt thereof. The pH of the composition is maintained at at least about 11 and the temperature of the composition is maintained at at least about 90.degree. C. The unionized form of the acid is made by cooling below 50.degree. C. and lowering the pH to between about 4 and about 5. Also disclosed are the intermediate compounds, fluoro-N-hydroxyphthalimides, and a method of making them.

  • Patent number: 4935213
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making potassium tripolyphosphate by loading an ion exchange resin with either potassium or hydrogen ions and passing an aqueous solution of sodium tripolyphosphate through the resin so that the sodium ions of the sodium tripolyphosphate are exchanged with the ions loaded onto the resin, forming either potassium tripolyphosphate or tripolyphosphoric acid, respectively. The tripolyphosphoric acid is reacted with potassium hydroxide to form potassium tripolyphosphate. When the ion exchange resin becomes exhausted it is regenerated using a potassium-containing ionic solution, forming a sodium ion containing stream. The sodium ion containing stream is reacted with a phosphoric acid to form a stream of sodium phosphates.

  • Patent number: 4928579
Abstract: An improved disc brake plastic piston is described which has a metallic cap or face which provides a means of attaching a brake shoe or a brake shoe assembly, or provides a dust boot groove, or, in a most preferred mode, the metallic cap component provides both a brake shoe retaining means and a dust boot groove. The piston is comprised of a cylindrical plastic body having an open end and a closed end. At least one ring bead can extend from the wall of the piston body contiguous to, or near, the open end. A metallic cap extends over the end wall of the open end of the cylindrical body and is secured to the body by being snap fit or clamped over the ring bead. Alternative means for anchoring the metallic cap are provided, such as by crimping the interior lip of the metallic cap or by providing threads on the internal or external walls of the piston adjacent to the open end of the piston, and corresponding or matching threads on the metallic cap.

  • Patent number: 4922012
Abstract: Novel organic tertiary phosphine oxides for example, bidentate organophosphorus actinide extractants, such as the carbamoylmethylphosphine oxides (CMPO's) are disclosed, such compounds can be prepared (e.g., in 85% or better yield and purity) by a process involving phase transfer catalysis, under conditions where degradive hydrolysis of the products or reactants is substantially avoided. For example, tertiary carbamoylmethylphosphine oxides which are useful as extractants for transplutonium elements are disclosed and can be prepared by reaction of the corresponding secondary phosphine oxides with 2-substituted acetamides (wherever the substituent is a good leaving group, e.g., chlorine) in a two-phase system containing a high concentration of an aqueous base (preferably sodium hydroxide) and a suitable phase transfer catalyst, e.g., tetralkylammonium chlorides.

  • Patent number: 4906522
Abstract: Compositions of nickel, iron and phosphorus, are prepared by fusing nickel and ferrophosphorus in an inert atmosphere, with the nickel preferably comprising from about 5% to about 70% by weight of the composition. The fused composition is ground or atomized to form a conductive, corrosion resistant pigment, preferably having a particle size of from about 0.1 to about 15 microns. This pigment can then be incorporated into a suitable resin binder, optionally with one or more other suitable metals such as zinc or nickel, to prepare corrosion resistant coatings, weldable coatings, EMI shielding coatings, electrostatic dissipation coatings, or electrically conductive coatings.
