Abstract: Esters of C.sub.10-25 aliphatic carboxylic acids (especially oleic acid) and C.sub.15-40 aliphatic alcohols (especially alcohol mixtures) are useful for protecting metal surfaces against corrosion, especially by acidic vapors. They may be applied in the form of a solution or dispersion in a substantially inert, normally liquid organic diluent such as Stoddard solvent.
Abstract: Condensation products made by reacting an alpha-hydroxyalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The total number of carbon atoms in the non-fused hydrocarbyl substituents is at least about seven while the alpha-hydroxyalkyl group contains from one to about 36 carbons and the olefinic acid or nitrile reactant usually contains two to about forty carbon atoms. Products made from hydroxymethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic acid derivatives such as maleic anhydride are particularly useful. Similarly useful post-treated products can be made from these condensation products by further reaction with alcohols, amines, metal salts or metals.
Abstract: Oil compositions useful as lubricants and multigraded between SAE 75W and SAE 250 can be made by combining (A) about 95 to about 30 weight percent of a base oil consisting of an oil having a viscosity of about 40 to 2000 SUS at 100.degree. F., (B) an extreme pressure improving amount of at least one extreme pressure agent, and (C) about 5 to about 70 weight percent of at least one oil-soluble polymer, said polymer being exemplified by a hydrogenated interpolymer of a monovinyl arene and at least one C.sub.4-6 conjugated diene or at least one C.sub.2-6 alpha-olefin.

Abstract: Aqueous disperse compositions capable of irreversibly forming films, comprising an internal phase of at least one film-forming, non-asphaltic, oleaginous material and an external phase comprising a clay-thickened water slurry, containing, in addition to clay, a flocculating agent are disclosed. Typical film-forming materials are made by reacting a carboxylic acid with an overbased salt of an organic acid, particularly those that have been converted into non-Newtonian colloidal disperse systems such as an alkaline earth metal sulfonate gel. Typical clays are montmorillonite-type clays and usually the composition as a whole is thixotropic. These compositions are useful, for example, as coatings for preventing corrosion of metallic surfaces.
Abstract: Compositions suitable for use as forging lubricants, especially for hot forging, comprises an aliphatic or alicyclic organic diluent (preferably one which has a high flash point and a relatively high boiling point), graphite and non-Newtonian basic alkaline earth metal complex. The complex is preferably a grease-like or gel-like basic calcium or magnesium sulfonate or carboxylate, or mixture thereof. Basic magnesium sulfonate-carboxylates are especially preferred. These lubricants, when used in hot forging operations, are characterized by their ability to protect the forging die from welding, scoring or other deformation and by their relatively smokeless properties.
Abstract: Used oil is rerefined by diluting it with a non-polar diluent, removing insoluble impurities from the resulting solution, extracting said solution with an immiscible liquid extractant to remove further impurities, and finally removing extractant and diluent from the oil.
Abstract: This invention is directed to oil-soluble acylated-nitrogen compositions having demulsifying characteristics obtained by reacting at least one carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid-producing compound having at least 8 aliphatic carbon atoms with an effective amount of at least one high molecular weight polyoxyalkylene polyamine; said polyamine having an average molecular weight of at least about 200. The acylated-nitrogen compositions of this invention are particularly useful as additives for a variety of oleaginous materials including, for example, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, lubricants, fuels, e.g., gasoline, diesel fuels, etc.
Abstract: Compositions useful as additives for fuels and lubricants can be made by reacting (A) an aromatic compound having an OH or SH group attached to an aromatic nucleus and an aromatic hydrogen atom (e.g., a substituted phenol wherein the substituent is an alkyl group of at least 50 carbon atoms); (B) an aldehyde or reactive equivalent thereof (e.g., formaldehyde); (C) a non-amino hydrogen, active hydrogen compound (e.g., a phenol, N,N-dimethyl aniline, etc.) and optionally, (D) an aliphatic alkylating agent of at least 12 carbon atoms (e.g., a polyisobutene of about 50 carbon atoms).
Abstract: Nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compositions are prepared by reacting an oil-soluble dispersant with a dimercaptothiadiazole such as 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole and subsequently reacting the intermediate thus formed with a carboxylic acid or anhydride containing up to about 10 carbon atoms and having at least one olefinic bond. The preferred carboxylic acid or anhydride is maleic anhydride. The compositions thus obtained are useful in lubricants as dispersants, extreme pressure agents, corrosion inhibitors and inhibitors of copper activity and "lead paint" deposition.
Abstract: Compositions comprising a plasticizer, preferably a polyhydroxy compound, and an N-sulfohydrocarbon-substituted acrylamide polymer, preferably a homopolymer of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid or a salt thereof, are useful as water-activated hot melt adhesives.
Abstract: Compositions which form homogeneous blends with lubricating oils and the like are produced by preparing a mixture of an oil-soluble dispersant (preferably a substantially neutral or acidic carboxylic dispersant) and a dimercaptothiadiazole, preferably 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, usually with a diluent, especially a lubricant base liquid, and heating said mixture above about 100.degree. C. The compositions often contain dimercaptothiadiazole moieties in amounts substantially greater than stoichiometric. They are useful for suppression of copper activity and "lead paint" deposition in lubricants.
Abstract: Compositions made by reacting (I) a metal phenoxide salt of a bridged phenol of 2 to about 20 phenol groups and (II) a carboxylic acid reagent containing from one to three carboxyl-based groups and a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon-based aliphatic or alicyclic group containing a halogen atom are useful as additives for lubricants and normally liquid fuels. Analogous thiophenoxide-based compositions are similarly useful. These compositions can also be used as intermediates for the preparation of other useful additive compositions through their reaction with alcohols, amino compounds, reactive small ring heterocycles and basically reacting metal compounds.
Abstract: Sulfur-containing compounds of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R is a hydrocarbyl radical; each of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical; m' is from one to about five; and each A is an alkyl radical containing at least one carboxyl group or functional derivative thereof, are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels.
Abstract: Lubricant and fuel compositions characterized by improved demulsifying properties are disclosed, which properties are contributed substantially by an additive comprising a mixture of:(A) One or more reaction products of a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid or anhydride with one or more polyalkylene glycols or monoethers thereof,(B) One or more organic basic metal salts, and(C) one or more alkoxylated amines.
Abstract: Reaction mixtures comprising components (A) Group II metal salts of phosphorus-containing acids, (B) basically reacting alkali metal compounds, and (C) optionally, di- or trivalent metal-containing salts are suitable for the preparation of basic metal salt compositions of phosphorus-containing acids, with the proviso that components (A), (B), and (C) are not the same. The basic metal salt compositions are useful in the preparation of lubricants.
