Abstract: This is a method for the preparation of polyurethane/acrylic-or-vinyl latexes for use in waterborne adhesives or coatings in which the urethane polymer component has no urea linkages. A fully reacted emulsifiable polyurethane is prepared in an acrylic or vinyl monomer, which acts as the solvent or diluent for the polyurethane. The monomer and polyurethane are then coemulsified, free radical initiators are added, and a regular acrylic or vinyl addition polymerization is carried out.

Abstract: A coating composition for concrete that is an effective water barrier and that is relatively easily removed comprises an acrylic copolymer or a styrene copolymer latex and a polysaccharide. The polysaccharide makes the coating composition susceptible to enzyme action and thus easily removable by flooding the surface of the coated concrete with a dilute solution of enzyme reactive with the polysaccharide.

Abstract: This invention is an emulsion polymer for use as a redispersible pressure sensitive adhesive and a process for making the emulsion polymer. The polymer is the emulsion polymerization reaction product of one or more neutralized ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomers, one or more alkyl acrylates or methacrylates, and optionally, one or more vinyl containing monomers. The carboxylic acid functionality is either neutralized before initiation of polymerization, concurrently with the polymerization, or partially before and partially during polymerization. The polymerization occurs in the presence of a polyalkylene oxide plasticizer, having a molecular weight greater than 3000. In other embodiments, the invention is the water redispersible pressure sensitive adhesive made with the polymer, and a repulpable substrate made with the polymer.

Abstract: A process to increase the amount of resistant starch in a starch product to at least about 15% resistant starch using a high amylose starch, such as HYLON V or HYLON VII, as the starting starch, consists essentially of the steps of gelatinizing a starch slurry, enzymatically debranching the starch, and isolating the starch product by extrusion or drying. A further increase is obtained by the addition of an inorganic salt to the debranched starch before isolation.

Abstract: Wet adhesion properties comparable or superior to all-acrylic latexes for vinyl acetate copolymers and other low cost polymers, such as EVA-vinyl chloride copolymers, is achieved by blending a minor proportion, usually about 5 to 15%, of a small particle size copolymer containing copolymerized wet adhesion monomer which is a cyclic ureido. Very low quantities of the wet adhesion monomer, less than 0.25 wt% of total monomers, only are required to achieve excellent results.
