Abstract: The viscosity of hydrocarbon solutions of dialkylmagnesium compounds is reduced by including as the viscosity reducing agent a nitrogen-containing compound which is a piperidine substituted with a hydrocarbyl group (preferably a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.9 aryl or C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl group) at the 2-position and optionally further substituted, triethylamine, cyclohexylamine, dicyclohexylamine, or N-N-dimethylformamide, or a mixture of two or more of these nitrogen-containing compounds. The viscosity reducing agent may be used as such or in the form of a substance produced by reacting such a nitrogen-containing compound with magnesium or with a dialkylmagnesium compound. The viscosity reducing agent may be used alone, or in a mixture with an organoaluminum viscosity reducing agent.

Abstract: A method of preparing a compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl, R.sub.1 is alkyl or aryl and X is halogen or nitro comprising reacting ##STR2## wherein R and X are as defined above with a mercaptan having the formula R-SH in the presence of an inorganic base, a phase transfer catalyst and a non-polar aprotic solvent.
Abstract: An acylated 1,3-dicarbonyl compound is produced by rearrangement of the corresponding enol ester in the presence of a cyanide source. In one embodiment the cyanide source is employed with a molar excess of a moderate base, with respect to the enol ester. In another embodiment, the cyanide source is a stoichiometric amount, with respect to the enol ester, of potassium or lithium cyanide and a catalytic amount of a crown ether is used.
Abstract: A method of preparing compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl, benzyl or aromatic, R.sup.1 is alkyl and X is halogen or nitro comprising reacting a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 and X are defined as above with a mercaptan having the formula R--SH in the presence of an inorganic base and a polar aprotic solvent.
Abstract: Compounds having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is methyl or ethyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or methyl; and R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; R.sub.3 and R.sub.5 taken together form a trimethylene chain, are insecticides.
Abstract: Compounds having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is methyl or ethyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; R.sub.3 is halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, trifluoromethyl, thio-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl) or phenoxy, and n is 0, 1 or 2; provided that if R.sub.2 is methyl, then R.sub.1 is methyl, are insecticides.
Abstract: Compounds for insecticidal control, having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is methyl or ethyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkyl or bromo-C.sub.4 -alkyl and R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 bromoalkyl or 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl, together with insecticidal compositions containing such compounds, and methods for controlling insects.
Abstract: An improved process for the production of compounds having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are lower alkyl by reacting a compound having the formula ##STR2## with sulfuryl chloride in the presence of a catalytic amount of a metal halide, the improvement in the process being reducing undesired impurities.
Abstract: Dialkylaluminum chloride produced as a co-product in the reaction of a trialkylaluminum with zinc chloride or metallic zinc and an alkyl halide, to produce a dialkylzinc, is purified from contaminants containing zinc by contacting it with an alkylaluminum sesquihalide, followed by distillation.
Abstract: Compounds and compositions containing them, for insecticidal control, particularly for use as soil and/or foliar insecticides, have the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl;R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, or C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl;R.sub.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl;R.sub.4 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, phenyl, halogen, or halo-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl);R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, phenyl, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 carboalkoxy; orR.sub.3 and R.sub.5 taken together form a trimethylene group; provided that if R.sub.3, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are all hydrogen, R.sub.4 is other than hydrogen.
